In this episode I get our new (to us) wee Noelex 25 trailer yacht ready to take to Lake Rotoiti in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand. Building some cabinets, painting and lining the hull. Nina & I make a beautiful Christmas cordial from the native New Zealand Christmas tree the Pohutukawa. Recipe: - 100gm Pohutukawa stamens/1litre bottle - 150gm sugar - 1/3 tspn citric acid Steep stamens in 1 litre of boling water overnight & bottle the next day! Best with bubbly & gin! I install a 200w solar panel with a MPPT Victron solar controller into two 100Ah deep cycle AMG batteries. This allows us to run a fridge freezer and lighting, charging etc even on overcast periods. On a sunny day we even run a portable ice maker! Having a wonderful two week spell of warm weather we get to return to the lake where all our adventures began. Lake Rotoiti. A long delay in video making with so much happening. We We finished our time in Germany, said our goodbyes to grandparents and Lucy (who sadly will stay in Germany due to the expense and barrage of injections etc , not to mention stress). We wait in Germany at Silke's parents home in Ramsin for a quarantine spot to become available for us to return home to New Zealand . Settling into life on land in a small German village called Ramsin in the former East Germany where Silke grew up, we spend time with her parents. After getting a PCR test we make our way to Berlin to the only clinic we've found to get vaccinated for Covid-19. Whilst there we visit Silkes friends and take in sights including the Berlin wall remains now used as an open air art gallery, relax in a beautiful park then jump aboard a double-decker bus and a canal boat for a tour of the Festival of the Lights. ........................................................................... Well, after alot of soul searching, research and Pro's & Con's lists we have decided to pull the pin on our amazing adventure. Sadly and basically its just getting too hard. We hoped that covid wouldnt be the excuse.. but it is. We weighed all our options, from us all sailing home, to me (Tim) getting crew to sail Polly back to New Zealand to where we are now, that is, selling Polly here in Turkey, travelling by plane to Germany while we wait for Lucy's rabies free period and also the stressful MIQ (Managed Isolation Quarantine) waiting queue. This time will also mean catching up with Silkes parents for a European Christmas . Something which may be along time happening again. To sail from the Mediterranean back to New Zealand would have taken 18mth minimum travelling 9000nm through some very rough and potentially damaging oceans and two weather systems season critical. The Panama canal passage, endless covid borders to cross (even if allowed ) then a final $28,000 GST & Import bill for Polly upon arrival. A totally around NZD$45-50k. Just too much .. too much risk. Polly has been sold and we are enjoying our last two weeks aboard. We hope to be able to buy another yacht in New Zealand to live on in Napier harbour. (Plan A). From there we will get work again and some sort of "normal life" but hopefully without the old hamster-wheel and rat-race of before. From there we want to live life fully and explore New Zealand from the sea and land. We will continue to tell our story through video and would love to continue to have you on board as Patreons. This week we finally have happy healthy Nina back on board. After two weeks of Nina in hospital she is finally over her mystery fever and illness. This episode see us face a horrible time with Nina coming down with a mystery illness. Doctors perform countless tests including two MRI's, X-rays, Ultrasounds and over 15 blood tests. Her blood is cultured for possible issues and also tested for Lyme disease (from Ticks) we are all tested for Covid. She is administered several types of very strong antibiotics via her intravenous drip line and while so many illnesses and issues were being discounted , its still not obvious as to the cause. Our insurance excess is huge so we must blow large amounts of money on this as she is in a private hospital . The doctors, specialists and staff are incredible and attend to Nina's' (and our own) needs with professional care and compassion. With Covid keeping so many borders closed along our intended passage home we are now faced with the very real question of whether we have to get real and pull the pin on our family adventure. With talk coming from both sides of a possible opening of the Greek border to Turkish yachts , we prepare for a crossing. It will either be to and through Greece, or as has happening many times before, Greece's talk about borders opening falls flat and we sail straight through the islands non-stop to Italy Sicily or Malta.
