Competent Crew Course details: ➜ https://www.firstclasssailing.com/rya-courses/competent-crew In this clip from our Solent RYA Competent Crew Course, you see us stopping for lunch. We bring the boat to a stop by heaving to. This is where we tack the boat but don't touch the sheet, so the headsail lies 'aback'. Once we have the wind on the main driving us forward, and the wind on the headsail pushing us back, and with the helm turned towards the wind, the boat will come to a stop. The boat will level up and be in balance. ** About the RYA Competent Crew course in Southampton ** The RYA Competent Crew course is the perfect introduction for beginners who want to get into sailing and is specifically designed for those with little to no sailing experience. Notice how rope becomes lines running from cleats on board to cleats on the shore. When we do this, these lines become mooring warps: one to attached the bow to the shore, one for the stern, and two to keep the boat in one place to stop it moving. Competent Crew Course details: ➜ https://www.firstclasssailing.com/rya-courses/competent-crew In this video shot on the Solent, we look at gybing in a little more detail. First thing we do before gybing is to centre the main. In the clip recorded during a Competent Crew course sailing out of Southampton, you see us on port tack; and we'll gybe onto starboard tack. As the stern goes through the wind, the wind gets behind the sails, and the headsail will start to come over, and the main will come across. We don't need to do anything with the main sheet at this point, but we do need to ease the headsail sheet on starboard, and take up the sheet on port. And then at this point we will ease the main sheet to let the main out. You can watch the first gybing tutorial video here: ➜ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6r2qLC51s0 ** About the RYA Competent Crew course in Southampton ** The RYA Competent Crew course is the perfect introduction for beginners who want to get into sailing and is specifically designed for those with little to no sailing experience. Competent Crew Course details: ➜ https://www.firstclasssailing.com/rya-courses/competent-crew In this short clip you see us out on the Solent during a RYA Competent Crew Course (sailing from Southampton). We sail out of the hove to position by centring the helm and allowing the wind, which was on our port side, to come around the stern of the boat, onto our starboard side. Competent Crew Course details: ➜ https://www.firstclasssailing.com/rya-courses/competent-crew As we return to port, we need to put the sails away. A crew member is seen sweating the furling line, whilst another crew member in the cockpit takes in the slack. With the headsail furled, we then drop the main. The boat is turned head to wind as we did when we set the main, to allow the sail to drop freely. ** About the RYA Competent Crew course in Southampton ** The RYA Competent Crew course is the perfect introduction for beginners who want to get into sailing and is specifically designed for those with little to no sailing experience. Competent Crew Course details: ➜ https://www.firstclasssailing.com/rya-courses/competent-crew In this short lesson clip, you see us sailing to windward and tacking our way upwind. You cannot sail a boat directly into the wind. The closest you can sail to the wind is roughly 45 degrees (depending on the boat) either side of the wind. If you want to go somewhere that is upwind you have to tack your way to your destination. Tacking is where you put the bow of the boat through the wind and the sails change sides. You end up sailing a zig zag course to get to where you want to go. ** About the RYA Competent Crew course in Southampton ** The RYA Competent Crew course is the perfect introduction for beginners who want to get into sailing and is specifically designed for those with little to no sailing experience. Competent Crew Course details: ➜ https://www.firstclasssailing.com/rya-courses/competent-crew This short clip of a Competent Crew course shows how to position the sheet lead car. The 'car' is something the genoa sail sheet passes through and we can adjust it's position along the deck to alter the angle that the sheet pulls down of the genoa. You will see how we need to set the sheet lead car for the headsail to the forward end of the track to allow the sail to adopt a fuller shape. We set it like this when the wind is coming from behind the boat. When we're sailing to windward (when the wind is forward of the beam of the yacht), we want the sail to have a flatter shape, so set the sheet lead car to the aft end of the track. ** About the RYA Competent Crew course in Southampton ** The RYA Competent Crew course is the perfect introduction for beginners who want to get into sailing and is specifically designed for those with little to no sailing experience. Competent Crew Course details: ➜ https://www.firstclasssailing.com/rya-courses/competent-crew In this clip from our RYA Competent Crew course, you can see how we unfurl the headsail. The headsail is the forward most sail, also called a genoa. In harbour, when not being used it is rolled up like a giant sausage around the ‘forestay’ which is a wire that helps to hold the mast up. Unfurling the headsail is where you unroll and open it up so you can use it to sail with. For centuries sailors have navigated their way across the oceans by celestial navigation or nautical astronomy - using a sextant with the sun, moon, planets, and stars. For the modern sailor, it is essential when crossing oceans as back up to the modern and much relied upon electronic navigation. If you are curious about how to use a sextant or have taken the RYA Yachtmaster or Ocean Theory courses, or are even self-taught, our celestial sailing weekends are ideal offering both an introduction and a refresher. All are welcome. A big advantage is that you learn in a small group, under the supervision of an expert instructor. The weekends involve sailing along the south side of the Isle of Wight and back up through the Needles. A beautiful area to sail whilst offering ample opportunity to practice using the sextant.
