Whilst, Bertarelli & Alinghi have recently returned to America's Cup racing after an 11 year hiatus. The 2010 America's Cup build-up was dominated by lawyers (and was arguably more acrimonious than the 1988 cup). The years of fighting would come to an end at this Deed of Gift match between just two teams. Another similarity with 1988 is the use of a wing sail by one of the teams. This cup also marked the transition of the America's Cup away from monohulls, too multihulls. And it saw the first & only trimaran to sail in the America’s Cup. This was the greatest sailing rivalry between billionaires ever seen. Both owners sailed on their boats. Bertarelli as helm (until Peyron tookover) and Ellison as afterguard. Injustice or a clever interpretation of the rules? Some argue that the 1988 America’s Cup was not a legal match. Legal drama surrounded the 27th America’s Cup well before they got to the start line and well after they crossed the finish line. This Deed of Gift match between the Michael Fay backed Team New Zealand and Dennis Conner’s Stars and Stripes saw the controversial birth of catamarans in the America’s Cup. This is the story. Fronted by 49er Olympian Sébastien Schneiter the Swiss SailGP team will begin competing in SailGP Season 3 (May 2022). Coutts says he is aiming for 10 teams. Who will be the 10th? Team GB's Hannah Mills becomes the most successful female sailor ever sailing with new crew Eilidh McIntyre (daughter of 1998 Star Gold medalist Michael McIntyre). It was also 470 success for Australia who finish second in the overall medal table with 2 golds. 470 men results: 🇦🇺 🥇 Matt Belcher and Will Ryan 🇸🇪 🥈 Anton Dahlberg and Fredrik Bergstrom 🇪🇸 🥉 Jordi Xammar and Nicolas Rodriguez (Xammer will replace Robertson on the SailGP helm) 470 women medalists: 🇬🇧 🥇 Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre 🇵🇱 🥈 Agnieszka Skrzypulec and Jolanta Ogar 🇫🇷 🥉 Camille Lecointre and Aloise Retornaz This will be the last Olympics with two 470 fleets with World Sailing combing them into a mixed gender fleet.

Going into this medal race Italy had a good lead but Britain had a chance to catch them. The race included some of sailing's top names. Jason Waterhouse, Lisa Darmanin, Paul Kohlhoff, & Lin Cenholt were fighting it out for the bronze medal. Previous Gold medalist from Rio and the 2nd oldest Olympian at Tokyo 2020 was Santiago Lange. He was just out of medal contention but sailed a great race to take home victory. Will this be his last Olympic Games? Team GB's Anna Burnet & John Gimson claim an important Silver making Great Britain the top sailing nation this Olympics with two golds earlier today. This Gold medal for Italy wasn't expected but it's a good sign of things to come for Italian sailing. Perhaps we'll see them on Luna Rossa one day (or maybe even an Italian SailGP team?).

Does this medal race show why the Finn deserves to be an Olympic Class? Unfortunately this looks like the Finn's last Olympics. SPOILERS AHEAD: The Gold went to Team GB's Giles Scott. This put Great Britain on top of the Tokyo 2020 sailing medal table. This is Britain's 6th consecutive medal in the class with Scott following in the footsteps of Iain Percy and Ben Ainslie. Hungary won there 1st ever medal with Zsombar Berecz winning the medal race and picking up Silver. 🥈 🇭🇺 Spain's Cardona finished 3rd. For New Zealander Josh Junior the medal race was a story of highs and lows being forced to do a last minute penalty. Let me know your thoughts on the racing. It was a very close medal race that went right to the wire.
