Our recent visit to Bogles Round House in Carriacou took us down memory lane! :) We enjoyed a fresh meal along with a few fantastic bee's knees cocktails. At the entrance of the restaurant a plaque states: "Man does not have to live or think within straight lines or boxes either physical or metaphorical." Well...we really couldn't agree more. The best Bee's knees we ever had was served up at The Back Room Bar in NYC- we had some special nights there! :) Check them out and use the same hidden entrance that was used 85 years ago. Enjoy a cocktail from a teacup-the way people used to secretly drink during prohibition. http://backroomnyc.com/ If you find yourself curious, dig a little deeper on the history of this cocktail here- https://spiritsbeacon.com/cocktails/recipes/bees-knees Thanks to Bogles Round house for awesome memories. Don't miss a proper meal there if you find yourself in Hillsborough, Carriacou. The property was designed and "built primarily from of natures leftovers and man made waste". It's a small restaurant and it most always books up so take the time to make a reservation to avoid disappointment. https://www.boglesroundhouse.com/ ?Instagram: Catamaran.Cocktails ?Instagram: ThenTheyWentRogue #fountainepajot #catamaransailing #cocktailrecipes
Today we are making The Jasmine Cocktail and bringing it to the beach. It's a modern day cocktail...created in California in the 1990s by a guy named Paul Harrington. He named the drink after his college friend, Matt Jasmin, who challenged Paul to "Make me something you've never made before." If you've ever had the classic Pegu Club cocktail- it's similar in spirit (no pun intended) to that. Our adventure today features Mopion Island - you can read more about it here https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/mopion and here https://www.lonelyplanet.com/st-vincent-the-grenadines/petit-st-vincent/attractions/mopion-island/a/poi-sig/1622222/1331239 Ps- if you are in to scuba diving- this is a great area to scuba!! The reefs are healthy and full of curious, cute sea life. So how to make the Jasmine: 3/4 oz fresh squeezed lemon juice 1 & 1/2 oz London Dry gin 1/4 oz Campari 1/6 oz simple syrup Shake, shake! Serve in a chilled coupe glass with a lemon twist The inspiration for this video comes from our friends at The View on the island of Mustique. What a great place! Thanks guys for the truly awesome experience. Please check them out on instagram and don't miss going there if you ever find yourself on the island. @_kyle_lewiss @theview.mustique Thumbnail created in Canva ? Hey guys! We got married on NYE! For our honeymoon we've taken Coco Bongo on an adventure through St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Our goal: 12 islands in 3 weeks! Lets see if we can do it. Of course we are always on the lookout for an inspiring mix and we think we've found a pretty good one. The Mango Black Pepper Gin and Tonic, created by the owners of Bar One, the floating bar on the island of Bequia. Bequia is a very unique place and absolutely worth visiting. Bequia means "island of the clouds" in the ancient Arawak. We try to keep things simple around here. We liked this one because the few ingredients required are pretty easy to come by. IF you can manage- use real, fresh mango's instead of pasturized juice. It makes a huge difference. You could even freeze and blend- just be sure to stir well before topping off with your tonic. The inspiration for this drink we are crediting to ?? https://www.instagram.com/baronebequia/?hl=en https://m.facebook.com/baronebequia Curious to know more about Bequia? Take some time to read about their history- it's really fascinating and includes whaling and wars and shipwrecks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bequia ?Instagram: Catamaran.Cocktails ?Instagram: ThenTheyWentRogue #fountainepajot #catamaransailing #cocktailrecipes
SUBSCRIBE NOW: https://goo.gl/bPrSLZ Did you know that The Brandy Alexander was John Lennon's favorite cocktail? We think he was on to something! The Brandy Alexander is a classic cocktail believed to have originated in the early 20th century. Its exact inventor and origin are uncertain, but it gained popularity during the Prohibition era in the United States. The cocktail's sweet and creamy nature made it a favorite among those seeking a sophisticated drink during that time. Today, the Brandy Alexander remains a beloved choice for its nostalgic charm and is enjoyed worldwide. We feel our little twist on this famed drink could be your next big-batch holiday crowd-pleaser. Seriously! Give it a try!!! Believe it or not, boat life in the islands isn't just slinging cocktails and cleaning Congo Bongo. A lot has been happening for us behind the scenes for us this last year...Come on a quick dighy ride with us while we share what we've been quietly working on when we aren't making up drinks. ?Instagram: Catamaran.Cocktails ?Instagram: ThenTheyWentRogue #fountainepajot #catamaransailing #cocktailrecipes
The Spicy Lemon Margarita will knock your socks off!! (For the record, Lauren wanted to call this the Chili-Cello Margarita!) Here on Coco Bongo, we love a good culture mashup!! No one knows who dreamt up the infamous Margarita Cocktail that we know and love so so much (many claim credit, and only a few of those actually come from Mexico) but we DO know Limoncello is Italian...true limoncello uses lemons sourced from the Amalfi Coast or the island of Capri. We created this little gem simply because we had limited ingredients this week. Due to the recent covid outbreak, people have been panic buying and getting groceries is a bit of a nightmare. If you love Limoncello, you should go check out the airbnb experience it looks pretty awesome. We haven't tried it yet but we want to. https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/2289119?guests=1&adults=1&s=67&unique_share_id=00af2d66-f409-4565-a0af-01b3bd9922dd This drink's ingredients are so simple. Just make sure you a squeezing your lemon juice and lime juice when you can- it makes a massive difference in your alcoholic beverages Be sure to let us know if you have any non-alcoholic beverage requests, we are working on ideas now! Not to give away too much... we are trying out a limeade something in our "lab". Ha. Next week we have a really neat cultural twist on a classic, don't miss it- hit the alert bell. Come by if you are in the area, we will make you a drink! This week we went sailing with some friends. It was just what the doctor ordered. They have an impeccable, charming Morgan 41...a well-designed, cross-purpose boat. It looks classic, has the heart of a racer and the sturdiness of a cruiser. Take a quick peek inside! We feasted on roti and homemade bread. We sang, we played games, and Catamaran Cocktails recreated a Nigerian drink called "The Chapman"...a non-alcoholic (well, almost) mix that Micheil recalls from his childhood. It's ALMOST non-alcoholic, because it has Angostura bitters, which yes- does contain alcohol, but it's so diluted in the drink that it wouldn't much matter, its really only for flavor. Angostura Aromatic Bitters comes from Trinidad and Tobago and is made with extracts of grasses, roots, leaves and fruits. It is great for balancing drinks but it also works in cooking and can facilitate digestion and much more. Read more about Angostura Bitters here https://www.healthline.com/health/food-nutrition/how-to-use-bitters#what-are-they-good-for and check out this crazy bitters story here https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/washington-island-wisconsin-bitters-shots Trolling didn't work out for us, but it didn't matter. It was a great sailing day. BTW- lobster season has just begun- maybe that will be our next attempt to catch something.
To recreate a zingy apple cider effect we used LEMONCELLO! Who would have guessed?? It was seriously awesome. Brandy Amaretto (thanks MITUTU) Sour Apple Snapps Lemonchello Pinch of cinnamon Stir at least 30 seconds Pour over large cube of ice Garnish with cinnamon stick
Our Ginger Shantytown is a Catamanan Cocktails origianl, but the the inspo totally came from the Death and Co.'s Shantytown recipe. The Ginger Shantytown is a VERY loose twist on a Boilermaker style cocktail. What's a boilermaker, you ask? The Boilermaker is traced back to blue collar workers over 200 years ago. They'd drink one after a long shift. By definition, it's is a shot (of whisky) in one glass and a beer in another. You can either down the shot of whiskey then drink the beer, OR, you can dunk your shot of whiskey right into your beer, and chug. In recent years, bars have been getting super creative and experimenting with their pairings. Lauren's vote is a shot of mezcal with a light pilsner. Or how about Campari with a raspberry sour ale? (Yes, please to both!). For us, we went with a freshly filled growler of Ginger Cider from the West Indies Brewery Company- AWESOME place to hang out, btw! And paired it with Blue Light Caribbean Gin and mashed up apples. Super fun and easy to make, and really refreshing on a hot day.
This classic cocktail was originally found in the Cafe Royal Cocktail Book, published 1937 in London. Even thought this recipe made it's big debut in a British book, many believe that the recipe was created by an American simply because of it's name. The phrase, "Twisting the LIONS TAIL" was used during the revolution as a metaphor for provoking the British, whose royal coat of arms features a lion. Cocktail recipe Serves 1: (in the video Ryan is making drinks for two). 2oz bourbon 1/2 allspice dram Lime juice 1 Tsp Simple syrup Aromatic bitters 2 dashes Please let us know what you think of this one, we are really curious what you think!
Lauren's brother requested another cucumber drink, so we decided to try our hand at the Archangel cocktail, a recipe created by Michael McIlroy and Richard Boccato and the ultra famous NYC bar Milk & Honey- afterwards they featured it in the PDT (Please Don't Tell) Cocktail Book. It's a play on the traditional Pink Gin. So why Archangel? It's actually pretty random... The two creators came up with the name after discussing the Argentinian Football (Soccer) player Gabriel Batitusta. That's his nickname. The cocktail is straightforward and easy to make at home made with Gin and Aperol. But wow it tastes so complex! And although it falls into the "booozy" categroy, it's the kind of drink that goes down easy during this crazy heatwave. Let us know if you try it!
Follow along this weekend as we go on a Caribbean Poker Dinghy run! This charity event raised funds for Petite Calivigny Yacht Club's youth sailing program. There were about 80 poker players and we managed to raise $2000. The funds allow more than 20 Grenadian girls and boys to learn how to sail every Saturday. So cute. We call our little boat "Baby Bongo" and it's a different kind of boating...it does a pretty great job of zooming us around on the water. Having a dinghy is actually a really cool thing- it gets us to ?places we couldn't get to otherwise. Lauren found her epic watermelon sun hat at a random shop in Carriacou and the knockoff Ray-Ban sunglasses were picked up in Saint George's for a steal at $5ec, lol. Ryan's pirate hat...well he got that in Israel during Purim way back before Covid times. Thanks guys so much for following along! We are taking requests and we have some non-alcoholic 'mocktail' drinks coming your way!
Hey all!! We decided to post a little early for World Elephant Day. Everyone, meet the Marula Vodka Soda! This drink was created with the South African cream liquor Amarula, which is made from the Marula fruit. Let us know what you think!!
We throw a Caribbean twist at the Lemon-drop Martini! Recipe for one: 1 and 1/2 oz Vodka (you usually want to use upper-shelf Vodka when making martini's...reach for Grey Goose, Kettle One, Belvedere...you get the idea) 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice 1/2 oz Cointreau or Grand Marnier 1/2 oz cinnamon demerara simple syrup Shake like crazy and strain into a sugar-rimmed glass We chose to get fancy and use some mace as garnish. Mace is the outside of a nutmeg and has a very unique flavor.
Can you turn your Bourbon Whisky Tiki?? We try out the historic drink, the Derby Cocktail Tropicale´
In this episode we celebrate Lauren getting her skipper's license. Now Ryan has to pay her every time we take Coco Bongo out for an adventure ??? Tiki history and culture is unbelievably complex and super interesting. If you are curious to know more, Jim "Beachbum" Berry's books would be a great starting place. He has written some stuff you can really get lost in. He doesn't just cover drink recipes- he shares a TON of well-researched Caribbean history with stories of European exploration, pirates, slavery, and much more. Incredible summer reading!!! Tiki drinks with bourbon are rare- they tend to call for rum. But if done right, big-bodied whisky/whiskey's can go particularly well with spices that pop up consistently in tiki recipes like cinnamon, clove, allspice, and nutmeg. Some juices work, some don't. Pineapple juice and fruit almost always do. Recipe ingredients: 2 and 1/2 oz Bourbon (we used Maker's Mark) 1/2 oz Lemon juice 1 oz Pineapple juice Thank you so much for supporting us by watching. It's awesome. We are having so much fun and we have BIG things in the works- so much more than just making drinks on the boat. So stay tuned!
We decided to get off the boat for our recipe this week! We don't have a car here- totally wish we did so that we could more easily explore the inland areas of Grenada. For now, we jump along the coast from bay to bay via dinghy?we thought it would be fun to show you a behind the scenes look at how we get around on the daily. We love our little dingy and getting around this way is fun- it makes us quite happy! Beats traffic and the subway, for sure. Hog island is a very small island that sits vacant aside from Roger's rum shack and the veggie stand. It does get a little rowdy on Sundays when locals turn up to grill and bump Soca. The Casino is an absolute classic cocktail, dating back to before the prohibition. It's quite simple to make. We found this recipe to be tart and potent...that may have been because we didn't have maraschino liqueur. I wish we could get that product on our hands- it's very versatile! Either way, our official taste tester didn't seem to mind lol! We are so curious...if you have time let us know what you are finding more interesting so far on Catamaran Cocktails ...the classics or the original recipes. Happy summer everyone, we really hope you are having a great time out there! Cheers to health and strength from Coco Bongo! Catch ya next week!
Introducing the history behind The Last Word Cocktail. A fan favorite around here. Recipe for one: 1 and 1/2 shot Green Chartruse 1 and 1/2 Gin 1 and 1/2 Luxardo Liqueur 1 and 1/2 Lime Juice If this is too potent for you, some recipe's out there suggest adding some chilled water. We like it the way it is. Hope to see you over on our Instagram catamaran.cocktails. We check there for requests and ideas from you all. We hope you are all enjoying your summer and it's filled with leisure, friendship, love, fun events, festivals, leisure, and of course, travel!
This drink is slightly more complex to make than some of our others- but a million times worth it!! Wow- it turned out INSANELY GOOD. Everyone on the boat was a big fan- this is a crowd pleaser, for sure. If you like Mezcal then this one is not to be missed. Let us know what you think! The Smokey Coconut Margarita: 2/3oz Fresh squeezed Lime Juice 1 and 1/2oz Mezcal 1/2oz Tripel Sec 1/2oz Malibu or coconut rum 1 and 1/2oz Coco Lopez Shake, serve with the ice in shaker. Top with coconut shavings A big thanks to our special guests this week- Ryans parents. We took them out on an EPIC 10 day sailing adventure....which may have turned out to be just a little to epic for all of us...It took a good few days to recover. Thanks for all the fun. What an adventure! Thank you Dre for getting us this cherished Mezcal- it's Lauren's favorite spirit and she hasn't had it for almost a year. :) Follow us over on IG for more @catamaran.cocktails and @thentheywentrogue
