Schooner Alexander Hamilton Built in Gallows Bay Charlestown by Nevisians just feet away from the birthplace of the great man himself. The planning of her started in 1979. She was keel laid in 1981 by Ralph Harris, one of the last West India wooden boat builders in Nevis. Mr Ralph Harris’ memory is still alive to many Nevisians today. She is a recreation of a traditional 18th-century schooner, keel of greenheart from Guyana, ribs and frame cut and trimmed by hand from the sloops of Mount Nevis. The mast telegraph poles were made from USVI’s. Built to introduce visitors to the Caribbean of a time when all materials were transported from island to island under sail. We plan to offer an alternative and unique experience to modern sailing vessels. While the vessel will be operated commercially to ensure her success and future, we wish to introduce a scholarship program for Islanders to be trained and gain internationally recognized sailing qualifications.
