One of the very few coastal anchorages off the East coast of South Africa. Pot stew, paddling, anchor app use, sunsets, full moon rises, dinghy launching, biplane, shipping, harbour operations, fun with friends.

The logistics of clearing out of Richards Bay to sail to Durban has challenges almost as challenging as sailing this section of the Indian ocean. Using the mighty Agulhas current and surfing along a short choppy North Easter sea was “sporty”!

The 2026 Ihaca experience is a sailing week, with the main race over 210 nautical miles from Inhaca Island, Mozambique, to Richards Bay South Africa.. we sail our catamaran from Durban to Richards Bay and then on to Inhaca island for the racing week. Trips to the light house, meeting with the King of Inhaca, beach braais and bonfires and plenty water fun made for a memorable week. Thank you to Zululand Yacht Club for being great hosts and Kobus and Maritza Bruwer for exceptional organization.

The Geriatskis and surfski paddlers from all over Durban gather at 630am every Thursday morning for some speedwork, but mostly a social paddle as an excuse to have breakfast afterwards. All are welcome from old to young and pathetics to pros!

A group of Geriatskis took advantage of fairly good sea conditions to paddle to a reef off the old Whaling station, the Bluff, Durban. Anchored one surfski and tied the others to it and explored the 5-10m deep reef structure. Highlights were a large puffer fish and an even bigger crayfish.

The mighty Indian ocean gave us a bit of a working over for two weeks! Swells from the Southern ocean rolled in on the port beam and made for an uncomfortable and often wet passage, but the Maxim 380 catamaran soldiered on relentlessly. Downwind to Cocos Keeling September 2024. Cocos Keeling is amazing and 5 days anchored at Direction Island was special. Well done to Australia for looking after and preserving this paradise outpost.

For those looking for information on crossing the Southern Indian ocean, Del Mar sails from Serangan harbour, Denpasar, Bali to Christmas Island in the Indian ocean. August 2024, with Brandon Jackson skipper Nd Russell Case crewing. First portion is preparation for an ocean crossing in Benoa port, Bali, then the sail and arrival at Christmas Island.

We sail Gili Gede, Marina Del Ray, Gili Asahan, Gili Sudak, Gili Air, Serangan harbour, all part of Lombok and Bali. We visit Lombok Wildlife Park, Bali Turtle Conservation center. Sailing the Lombok strait is a sleigh ride of current down to Denpasar. Lombok and the Gili islands are awesome, some of the best sailing and cruising I have done. Gayle was awesome crew and we had plenty dinners and passage beers - Bintangs - all at very reasonable prices. Indonesia is indescribably incredible. Wonderful people!

We visited the awesome Lombok Wildlife Park while moored at Gili Air, Indonesia. Most animals are rescued and brought there or are born there. The staff are hugely informative and the animal interaction you have is amazing. Very well maintained and the animals are super well cared for.

We sail South West Indonesia, along the North coast of Sumbawa and Lombok islands.visit Wera boat builders, Satonda volcano, fascinating Gili Air and finally Marina Del Ray on Gili Gede. Awesome cruising grounds of Indonesia.

Viento Del Mar sails from Kupang to the Komodo national park. It is middle of komodo dragon mating season and we get some awesome footage. We anchor and re-provision near the nice town of Labuan Bajo. Other highlights are Pink Beach and Padar island hike. Video gives an idea of cruising the Komodo islands by yacht.
