Boat specs below ?? Hey friends, welcome back. This episode is all about sailing our 42' sailboat named Boundless roughly 350 nautical miles from Marina Puesta Del Sol in Nicaragua, to Chiapas Mexico. We are saying goodbye to this amazing country, after a quick but action packed week here. If you are looking for adventure whether by land or sea, we highly recommend visiting, and you can check out last weeks episode to see what I'm talking about! This roughly 72 hour passage is bittersweet, because it is our last sail of the season. The Pacific Ocean as you may know also has a hurricane season, and because of that we are pumping the brakes once we get to Mexico, and switching into project season, but more on that ever growing list later. For now, I hope you enjoy coming along with us for 3 days of sailing, dolphins, squalls, unmarked fishing lines, and trying to cook food in a washing machine. Boat specs below ?? Traveling the world whether its by car or plane or train or boat, can be unpredictable. In combining sailing and traveling the world, I sometimes feel like there isn't any control other than where pointing the bow of the boat feels best, and even then, sometimes we literally have no idea where we are going to end up. I think that's what freedom is?giving up on trying to control things, and going with the flow of life. Its more a mental state of mind I think, and one thing about freeing yourself of control is, suddenly anything becomes possible. Now not to say we don't plan things or enjoy structure when we can find it. And it's not often that we don't have at least some idea of what were going to be doing in a country we decide to visit. Even before sailing to the Bahamas for the first time, we knew SOME of what to expect. Crystal clear water, learning how to catch and cook fish, learning how to sail on the ocean haha. In Panama, we knew we had one goal, get to know this new boat, Boundless. Sailing to Nicaragua marks our 3rd country with her, and not only did we not know what to expect in this new country (maybe because we hadn't even considered stopping here) but our new friends Becka, Zach also had no clue what to expect. Well this week we are hiking two of Nicaraguas 40 volcanoes, sliding down the face of an active one on sketchy plywood boards, and then sleeping with the cows on the top of the second. But our first impressions were not the exciting thrills of volcano boarding and camping, it was the Marina Puesta Del Sol that has a sprawling estate like feel. Beautiful buildings we were told are filled with hotel rooms, but nobody was home. We had the place to ourselves aside from a few other cruising boats. Mango trees were everywhere, and the marina employees had a great method for reaching the perfectly ripe fruit. And the beaches, wow, some of the most breathtaking we've seen. I hope you enjoy! Boat specs below ?? Hey friends, welcome back. This week we are continuing our passage from Costa Rica to Nicaragua, and are currently sailing through one of the notorious sections of Papagayo wind. There are a few of these areas along the this part of central and north americas pacific coastline. They can have powerful accelerations of wind due to the topography across the continent from the Atlantic to Pacific ocean. Thankfully, rainy season means that the trade winds in the Caribbean are less active, and therefore this funneling and acceleration of wind through valleys and around mountains is generally less powerful, and happens less frequently. So we got that going for us. Especially since rainy season means lots of thunderstorms which we have been (mostly) successfully dodging with our trusty B&G radar. Thankfully THAT is still working, as we haven't had reliable wind instrument data for some time now. But theres really nothing to complain about while Boundless is ripping along with full sails since leaving Costa Rica in our wake. (She is a machine clip). Ask us about complaints tomorrow morning though, as tonight we're in for the scariest moment yet while out here on the ocean. It is VERY hard to explain and show on camera the duality of how it feels to be sailing along in perfect conditions while also having a pit in your stomach, watching clouds form all around you, greying out the sky and what would have been a beautiful sunset. It feels like there is some unknown thing, waiting to reveal itself under the darkness of the night sky. #digitalnomad #boatlife #epidemicsound #sonyalpha #travelvlog #pacific [ BOAT SPECS ] 1984 Passport 42 Hull #33 Displacement - 25,000 lbs Ballast - 9,500 pounds of lead (encapsulated keel not bolted on) Marconi Cutter Rig Length - 42' Beam - 12.75' Water Draft - 6.4" Air Draft - 59' [Music from Epidemic Sound] Kiri O Koete by Sugoi City Echoes by Dreem Beyond Worlds by Many Moons Ago Ridges by Harbours and Oceans Unbroken Spirit by Sunfish Grove

Boat specs below ?? There aren't many places that you can expect thunderstorms with lightning every single day and night, but over the past couple of months we've witnessed the transition of seasons in Costa Rica from dry, to wet. What took us a while to realize though, was that we were sailing through one of the most notorious "lightning alleys" in the world, the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone or ITCZ. It is here that the Northern and Southern hemispheres prevailing trade winds literally collide, creating some spectacularly powerful thunderstorms. Unlike squalls, these thunderstorms not only bring strong gusty winds, but they also bring one of (at least these sailors) biggest fears while out on the ocean, lightning, and lots of it. We were unknowingly in for a wild ride to Nicaragua, which is our next destination, and one we're high tailing it for tomorrow morning. Both Boundless and Teulu are up for the task, are we? This week we're taking the good with the bad, as we have some truly blissful moments in-between some of the scariest we've ever had out on the water. But first we need to check out of Costa Rica. #digitalnomad #boatlife #epidemicsound #sonyalpha #travelvlog #pacific [ BOAT SPECS ] 1984 Passport 42 Hull #33 Displacement - 25,000 lbs Ballast - 9,500 pounds of lead (encapsulated keel not bolted on) Marconi Cutter Rig Length - 42' Beam - 12.75' Water Draft - 6.4" Air Draft - 59' [Music from Epidemic Sound] Abyss by Luwaks All the Freedom You Need by Terin Ector Just Like The Sun by Bonkers Beat Club Follow the Ghost by The Eastern Plain Kiri O Koete by Sugoi

Boat specs below ?? May in Central America means the rainy season is just around the corner. It also means that Katy and Becka of Teulu Tribe have birthdays this month! This episode takes us on a sailing adventure from Quepos to Marina Papagayo in Northern Costa Rica, and also an adventure to Tamarindo, a lively town thats the perfect place to celebrate these two amazing women. Teulu Tribe Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@TeuluTribe This time of year also means lots of squalls and thunderstorms, some of which are just rain and some wind, and some of which can be VERY powerful with lots of lightning. The unexpected time we spent in San Jose was amazing, and the people maintenance was much needed, but when we returned to Boundless, the change in weather was apparent. The temperature and humidity was noticeably lower, and because of this change in atmosphere, we saw our first squall before leaving Golfito Bay. We were lucky last week with our overnight to Quepos, successfully dodging a few small squalls, but with our 60 foot lightning rod of a mast, we knew that we needed to start making some serious miles North. Our goal is to hunker down in Chiapas Mexico for hurricane season, and we have about 650 nautical miles and 4 countries between us and there. Because of that, our time in Quepos was cut short. Linking up with Becka and Zach also adds a layer of comfort because of safety in numbers, especially with the kinds of storms we will unknowingly encounter in the near future. Either way, its gonna be an adventure! #digitalnomad #boatlife #epidemicsound #sonyalpha #travelvlog #pacific [ BOAT SPECS ] 1984 Passport 42 Hull #33 Displacement - 25,000 lbs Ballast - 9,500 pounds of lead (encapsulated keel not bolted on) Marconi Cutter Rig Length - 42' Beam - 12.75' Water Draft - 6.4" Air Draft - 59' [Music from Epidemic Sound] Timeless Clouds by Luwaks

Boat specs below ?? Sailing around the world in both of our opinions is better if experienced together, but living in a small space means that we have to make a conscious effort in stoking our own fires. Now this is true for all kinds of lifestyles and relationships, but the extreme highs and lows of this particular lifestyle amplify the need to keep ahold of our individuality. Costa Rica is a place of many things, one of which sparked an idea in Katy, yoga retreats. She found Nereus Retreats, a "not your average" yoga and wellness retreat center here in Puerto Jimenez on the Osa Peninsula. Nestled in the Costa Rican jungle with the beach a short walk away, this place spoke to her as soon as she arrived. This video is all about her experience there, and introduces you to the beautiful retreat space, and some of the wonderful people who make it all happen. Boat specs below ?? Sailing solo is something that I believe every cruising couple should try at some point. It adds experience and confidence to know that if your partner gets sick or injured, you alone can handle your vessel competently and safely. Funny enough, Katy and I have been cruising for 3.5 years now, and the opportunity hasn't come up. Or maybe we haven't created the opportunity. Either way, with Katy at her yoga retreat, Boundless' crew is effectively down to 1 and I'm seizing the chance to gain this experience in the comfort of the protected waters of the Golfo Dulce here in Costa Rica. Today I am taking you along with me as I spend this time alone with our boat, sailing roughly 12 nautical miles from Golfito to Puerto Jimenez. This episode is silent, with only the sounds of Boundless and the ocean around her. After all, I am sailing solo and don't have anyone to speak to, so a silent film is fitting ? Boat specs below ?? The thought of cruising around the world alone hasn't ever really appealed to me. I like being around people, and more than that I love being around Katy. Sharing all these moments together, and working as a team to get through them, makes it all worth it. It builds a bond that is in some ways indescribable. People often ask us how we live together happily in such a small space. Truth is, we sometimes don't. Relationships are hard work, living on a boat is hard work, and sometimes the two at the same time can be downright overwhelming. But every day, we choose to work at them both, and the small living space prevents us from building up walls between each other. This lifestyle forces us to openly communicate our emotions, wants, and needs, because if we don't, if we aren't on the same page, or at least in the same chapter, our lives could be at stake. That being said, living this lifestyle together, in this small space, can easily blur the lines of individualism, of self. Katy and I have learned that it is important to continue nurturing our own independence, our own interests, and believe it or not, some of what we are interested in has nothing to do with sailing! We both love our yoga practice but doing absolutely everything together is a part of those blurred lines. Here in Costa Rica, Katy has found a way to reconnect with Yoga, the classroom, and the community it offers, which is a part of herself that is very important. She is taking some time away from the camera at Nereus Retreats, but at the end of her time there, I will be taking you along with me as we look into what that space is like and introduce you to the amazing people who own and run it. In supporting her own adventure, Ill be holding down the fort here on the boat, and it happens to lend itself to something I've wanted to experience for a while. What it takes to handle the boat all by myself. While she settles in there, the focus of the next two episodes is a look at what it's like to handle this boat and lifestyle alone. I will be backing Boundless off the dock, living at anchor, tackling projects, and sailing solo for the first time in my life. #digitalnomad #boatlife #epidemicsound #sonyalpha #travelvlog #boatyard [ BOAT SPECS ] 1984 Passport 42 Hull #33 Displacement - 25,000 lbs Ballast - 9,500 pounds of lead (encapsulated keel not bolted on) Marconi Cutter Rig Length - 42' Beam - 12.75' Water Draft - 6.4" Air Draft - 59' [ MUSIC BY EPIDEMIC SOUND ] Salt by Dye O Numb by Nihoni The Life of a Divorced Bumblebee by Josef Bel Habib Things that Matter by Frank Johsson

With no Country papers, Boundless' only cruising permit is the international waters of the Pacific Ocean. Now of course this will be short lived, and although we are only following the coastline Northeast to Panama's neighboring country of Costa Rica, its fun to think about the day we sail away from a country, exit papers in hand, with an ocean of water between us and our next destination. Currently, we are right about here. There is a peninsula that we have to round tonight, and somewhere on that land feature is the boarder between the two countries. We feel very lucky to have some wind for this passage, and to use that wind, we are sailing slightly off course, but we aren't complaining. Boundless is sailing at 45 degrees apparent wind angle, in 8-10 knots of apparent wind, moving along at around 5 knots. This episode, you're sailing with us into the sunset, and tomorrow, we embark on the next journey of checking into Costa Rica and getting more familiar with our diesel engine. It's always bittersweet, coming and going just like the tide, but the prospect of renewing our backyard yet again always sounds good. A new country, Costa Rica, is on the horizon, but not without an adventure first! Katy and I try not to have many expectations of places we visit, but after just 1 week in Bahia Honda, this beautiful slice of Panama will remain in our hearts forever. I think about the randomness of it all, Domingo and his family were probably just as surprised when we first anchored here. Two completely separate paths, converging for a brief moment, and while no lifestyle is without its hardships, the simple life of this family, only connected to the outside world in small, necessary ways is as beautiful as it looks and sounds. On and off camera, the moments of getting to know these people have been the highlight of our time in Bahia Honda, and Western Panama as a whole. It's a shame to hear that most boats don't want to interact with these lovely people and that over the years, there has been a decline in the number of cruising boats stopping here. That being said, if you are cruising through western Pacific Panama, we would highly recommend this wonderful place, especially because it also has the perk of great sleep. #digitalnomad #boatlife #epidemicsound #sonyalpha #travelvlog #boatyard [ BOAT SPECS ] 1984 Passport 42 Hull #33 Displacement - 25,000 lbs Ballast - 9,500 pounds of lead (encapsulated keel not bolted on) Marconi Cutter Rig Length - 42' Beam - 12.75' Water Draft - 6.4" Air Draft - 59' [ MUSIC BY EPIDEMIC SOUND ] Slow Surf by OTE What we Got by Terin Ector Passageways by Ballpoint Samba Vibes by Riverworn After a While, Smile by Sum Wave Lo Que Siento Por Ti by Caro Luna Message Between Worlds by William Benckert

Working as we go means that we also travel slowly, more so than your average cruising boat. We often find ourselves with a turnover or two of other cruising boats coming and going while in any given place. When we entered Bahia Honda, and anchored Boundless next to this beautiful shoreline, we were purely in search of a good night of sleep, and a comfortable place to catch up on work. We had no idea that we would not only be the only cruising boat here for our entire stay, but that we would meet a family who would open their lives and home to us. This week you are coming along with us in this remote part of Panama's Jungle for a look into their world, what is important to them, how they thrive in this remote area of Panamanian jungle, and how cruisers like us are a critical part of their ecosystem. Boat specs below ?? In life, you aren't guaranteed much, and living on a sailboat can sometimes accentuate that fact. Mother Nature rules our lives, and sometimes she can be a shifty old gal. Because of this, we watch the forecast like hawks, but local weather can be challenging to predict, and so our stunning new anchorage was short lived. Last week we found ourselves picking our jaws up off the floor at the beautiful coastline the morning after our first overnight sail complete with a couple dolphins viewed from our new found bow seat. The next day however we awoke to an unpredicted shift from NE to NW winds and rapidly deteriorating anchorage conditions. We tried muscling through a day of work, but with the new forecast update now showing the wind building and shifting even more against our favor, we decided to abandon the area entirely. Thankfully the boat sharing the anchorage agreed and has a track that can lead us to their previous anchorage, that would offer much better protection. The catch? It's 22 miles in the direction the wind is coming from, it's supposedly blowing 30 knots out there, and it's 6pm so the sun is setting. If Courage wasn't here (yes their boats name is Courage how ironic) I'm not sure what we would have done that evening because the prospect of entering an unknown anchorage alone at night in these conditions didn't sit well with us. Our good friends the dolphins came out to reassure us that we made the correct decision as we were leaving the anchorage and with the game plan to motor sail a couple miles north and then bare off for a better sailing angle, we were feeling confident in our decision. Lets see how it goes! #digitalnomad #boatlife #epidemicsound #sonyalpha #travelvlog #boatyard [ BOAT SPECS ] 1984 Passport 42 Hull #33 Displacement - 25,000 lbs Ballast - 9,500 pounds of lead (encapsulated keel not bolted on) Marconi Cutter Rig Length - 42' Beam - 12.75' Water Draft - 6.4" Air Draft - 59' [ MUSIC BY EPIDEMIC SOUND ] Curtains Drenched in Sunlight by Dawn, Dawn, Dawn Every Beat by Dawn, Dawn, Dawn Bridges by Volcan Peaks Next to Me by Lvly

Boat specs below ?? So yeah, last week WE WERE LUCKY, and it's a good lesson in anchoring whilst not suffering the consequences, so Ill call that a win, win. After all, we don't learn without mistakes. Now that the anchor is up and we are safely in a few hundred feet of water, where exactly are we going? Well this is the beginning of our first overnight passage on Boundless. We will be sailing across the Gulf of Panama in a westerly direction, making sure to dodge the shipping traffic along the way. And you're in for a treat because the beauty of Panamas Western Pacific coast is on our short list of the most beautiful sights ever. Even when the weather changes and we get chased out of our anchorage, the dolphins come out to play, highlighting the silver lining of the moment. So, just like that we were off, threading Boundless between a few outlying islands making sure to double check our charts before hitting the open ocean. We are expecting very calm conditions and possibly motoring the entire day and night, but with the huge tidal currents, and high winds forecasted that oppose them for half of every day over the next week, this is exactly what we were looking for to cross the Gulf of Panama and round Punta Mala. We've had an epic adventure buying Boundless, transiting the Panama Canal, and cruising the San Blas and las Perlas islands, but this moment feels different. Like we've truly untied the lines and set off on a grand adventure into the unknown. Who will we meet? What will we see? Boat specs below ?? We try and plan for everything because it is our lives and boat on the line, and in remote places especially, we are constantly monitoring things like daily weather local patterns, what the seabed is like for anchor holding, and do we need to move to a new place for safety and comfort? Sailing and anchoring in strong winds can be extra stressful and when the sun goes down and its still howling, it can be hard to switch off and relax, because we can't always assume it will be a safe harbor the entire night. The Pacific Ocean has new things to take into account. In addition to watching how much water is under our boat, and asking ourselves "would we still be floating if the wind shifts while at anchor?", there are 10-20' tidal changes in Panama that can fool unsuspecting sailors into thinking they're in enough water?until the weather shifts at night, at low tide and there are coral heads around. We always try to have a plan A, B and C, because there will come a time when Plan A and B fail, and sometimes, we only gotta be lucky, but what if our luck runs out? #digitalnomad #boatlife #epidemicsound #sonyalpha #travelvlog #boatyard [ BOAT SPECS ] 1984 Passport 42 Hull #33 Displacement - 25,000 lbs Ballast - 9,500 pounds of lead (encapsulated keel not bolted on) Marconi Cutter Rig Length - 42' Beam - 12.75' Water Draft - 6.4" Air Draft - 59' [ MUSIC BY EPIDEMIC SOUND ] Needle in a Haystack by Trailer Worx Ridges by Harbours & Oceans Samba Vibes by Riverworn A Forest Melody by Tellsonic Center of Gravity by Tellsonic

Boat specs below ?? Hey friends. We are in the Las Perlas Islands, in the eastern Gulf of Panama. Settling into cruising once again has been just wonderful and the hot topic of conversation has been about where we will go next, though it feels great to pump the brakes, and the beautiful beaches of the Pearl islands make slowing down after all the go go go, much easier. In fact it's hard to be on the computer at all when they are constantly beckoning us from outside our windows. And so the bigger question of where in the Pacific Ocean will we go can wait, because for now the only thing we have to worry about is the shoreline to explore, critters to look at, and our diesel engine running a little hotter than usual. In fact, our new friends Becka and Zach aboard Teulu whom we just met have their own YouTube channel and are sharing their own up and down experiences of this lifestyle (namely their recent engine issues). You never know what someone else is dealing with, and these stressful, sometimes potentially dangerous situations can take a toll on your state of mind, but our gratitude for all that we have and all that we are privileged enough to be doing is present with us on a daily basis. We are also grateful for all of you out there watching our videos. Thank you for being interested in our stories, and for being here with us wherever you may be. Boat specs below ?? Hey friends! We're currently exploring the beaches next to our boat anchored in the Las Perlas archipelago, after an amazing sail here last week from Panama City. We recently bought our dream boat, a Passport 42, did a ton of projects, broke stuff on our shakedown cruise, fixed it, transited the Panama Canal, and sailed into the Pacific Ocean. Whew, yeah this last year was a lot! In this episode you all are coming along with us for another first on our new boat. Actually 3, the first is discovering this beautiful beach. The black and gray sand is an indication that these islands were formed by volcanic activity, and this is the first time we have seen such a beach in our travels. Someone once told me that if you've see one beach, you've seen them all, but I find that hard to be true as we continue sailing to new places. Another interesting find, are parts of the beach, or island, that are revealed at low tide. Not very sandy, but cool to explore! Tomorrow we will be taking you through figuring out how to set up and fly our asymmetrical spinnaker for the first time. It's a huge downwind sail made of lightweight nylon, and flown at the front of the boat. The third will be catching our first Pacific Ocean fish, a big Jack Caravelle! The weather looks promising so lets see how it goes and welcome to Sailing Seawind. #digitalnomad #boatlife #epidemicsound #sonyalpha #travelvlog #boatyard [ BOAT SPECS ] 1984 Passport 42 Hull #33 Displacement - 25,000 lbs Ballast - 9,500 pounds of lead (encapsulated keel not bolted on) Marconi Cutter Rig Length - 42' Beam - 12.75' Water Draft - 6.4" Air Draft - 59' [ MUSIC BY EPIDEMIC SOUND ] Blue Guitars by Roy Edwin Williams Kiri O Koete by Sugoi On Cruise Control by Mind Server Unlimited Nicer by Houses on the Hill

An epic, and possibly a once in a lifetime journey across the Panama Canal, but of only 50 miles, has brought us to this new ocean. In the year 1520, explorer Ferdinand Magellan, after crossing the Atlantic in search of a new trade route to the Spice Islands, conquered Cape Horn and entered this new unfamiliar ocean, naming it "The Pacific" or "The Peaceful Ocean". It is the largest ocean on earth, taking up a whopping 60 million square miles, more than all of the continents combined. But for us, we have entered our 1st square mile and its hard to process how different this new ocean looks and feels. The sunsets are stunning over an endless horizon of open water. Huge tidal changes and long Pacific swell seem to be the breaths of this giant body of water, teeming with life above and below its surface. Even the Pelicans seem to have chosen this ocean, having not seen a single one on Panama's northern coast. The raccoons casually descend from the trees taking to the streets like the little banditos they are, and the sloths take to highways of their own under the cover of darkness. This new ocean also changes the dynamic of living on the water. The steep underwater cliff like shelfs and big pacific swells can make calm anchorages very rolly in the right (or wrong) conditions, making even the wide and more stable platform of a catamaran twist and roll violently at anchor. This new chapter was off to a rocky start. With computer work always beckoning, Katy takes to the floor of the cabin to avoid the worst parts of the constant motion for zoom calls, and at night we dance around the cabin trying to find the best sleeping spots, thankful for all of the different beds on Boundless. I said it a few times, but ill say it again, we did it. Sailing to the Pacific Ocean was a decision we made before either of us knew it. Change is hard, and grief always accompanies it, no matter how small or big the change, and chasing a dream like this has an endless supply of it. So its fitting to end this episode with our plaque gifted to us by our dear friends Terry & Jeanne, and what has been our motto since the beginning? We have no plan, and intend to stick to it ??
