We continue our journey down through the Florida Keys. We leave the tucked away anchorage of Tom's Harbor and head out into the Atlantic Ocean making our way down to Marathon. First, we make an overnight stop at Coco Plum Beach then continue motor sailing into the wind down to Boot Key in Marathon. We are Shawn, Jessie, Mojo and Voodoo. We started our Youtube channel, Big Easy Sailing, to document our journey on our 1972 Gulfstar 36 sailboat. We've been together for over 20 years and moved everywhere from our hometown of New Orleans to Alaska to Denver to Florida. Now our home will travel with us as we travel across beautiful blue waters. We settle into a comfortable liveaboard life again at Tom's Harbor Keys. That is until Hurricane Season 2020 starts early and we find ourselves along the very beginning of the path of Tropical Storm Arthur. After all the winds and rain we decide to swim over to the private island until we get visited by two large tarpon. Before we leave the secluded anchorage we face one more storm that almost puts us in the mangroves. We are Shawn, Jessie, Mojo and Voodoo. We started our Youtube channel, Big Easy Sailing, to document our journey on our 1972 Gulfstar 36 sailboat. In Loving Memory of Voodoo 11-09-09 ~ 10-31-20 We leave the Lower Matecumbe Key and continue heading south through the Florida Keys. We cross over from the Gulf side to the Atlantic Ocean for our first time sailing in the ocean. The winds completely die down and we decide to change our plans and anchor just outside of Long Key State Park for the night before we continue on to Tom's Harbor Keys. We are Shawn, Jessie, Mojo and Voodoo. We started our Youtube channel, Big Easy Sailing, to document our journey on our 1972 Gulfstar 36 sailboat. RIP ~ Voodoo ~ 11-09-09 - 10-31-20 We leave the mooring at Lignumvitae Key and make the short jump over to Lower Matecumbe Key, sailing through crystal clear waters. We enjoy a fun day playing with Voodoo at the sandbar at White Marlin Beach. We finally sailed away from Islamorada, but since we had to tack across the whole Barley Basin we changed our plans. We decided to stop at Lignumvitae Key and picked up our first mooring ball for the night. We settled in for the night with some sundowners from our favorite Park Ranger Kim. We had to repair our traveler car block after all the tacking we did before we continued sailing to White Marlin Beach. In Loving Memory of Voodoo 11-09-09 ~ 10-31-20 We survived dragging through the anchorage and now it's time to sail away. We leave our anchorage in the Barley Basin of Islamorada and start heading south through the Florida Keys. In true Big Easy Sailing style, the wind is coming directly at us, so our first sail won't be so easy. Tacking is the name of the game if we want to get out of the basin. The big day has finally arrived! Our new @PrecisionSailLoftVictoriahave been delivered and we unbox them immediately at the Coral Bay Marina. We invite the crew of @SailingMissLoneStar over for sundowners and they help us hoist our new mainsail for the first time. As we prepare to sail Gone with the Wind through the Florida Keys, we hoist our new headsail and admire the wonderful craftsmanship before securing it to the deck. Just minutes away from pulling up our anchor and sailing away with our new @PrecisionSailLoftVictoria, ominous clouds appear on the horizon and threaten our dreams of sailing away on S/V Gone with the Wind! You can't be fully off-grid if you don't have fresh water. To complete our onboard sustainability, we purchased a SeaWater Pro Desalination Water Maker, available locally in southern Florida. We pick up our water maker and install it in the engine room on Gone with the Wind. https://seawaterpro.com/ We are Shawn, Jessie, Mojo and Voodoo. While waiting for our new sails to arrive, we spend our time away from the Coral Bay Marina and out in the Little Basin. Getting accustomed to liveaboard life on S/V Gone with the Wind, we spend time like the locals. We acquire new to us stone crab traps. We're given some scuba gear from a local underwater photographer. Jessie drives Putt-Putt solo for the first time ever and does a bit of organizing our dry goods. We are Shawn, Jessie, Mojo and Voodoo. We started our Youtube channel, Big Easy Sailing, to document our journey on our 1972 Gulfstar 36 sailboat. After losing a piece of hardware overboard, we finally get the replacement piece and can complete the install of our safety lines. Shawn does some troubleshooting and repairs the aft stanchion handrail. We finish off Voodoo's swim step with a removable bracket attached to the transom. We are Shawn, Jessie, Mojo and Voodoo. Life on a boat is never without its problems and we've become pretty good a problem-solving. We fix our generator issue by purchasing a new one but even the new generator comes with its own issues. We prevent a problem from occurring by installing a water-fuel separator for our outboard, FiFi, in the dinghy. One of our biggest problems, when we leave the marina, will be getting Voodoo on and off the boat, so we design and create a step off the back of the transom for him to climb on. We are in a mad rush to complete our boat projects before we leave the Coral Bay Marina. As always, it's a game of one step forward, two steps back. Shawn replaces our tri-light and radio cable. We realize we have a major issue with our generator. While replacing our safety lines, critical hardware goes overboard. We are Shawn, Jessie, Mojo and Voodoo. Shawn to the rescue again, our boat neighbor Wild Bill sprung a leak and is almost resting at the bottom of the marina. After rescuing Wild Bill we decide to install a second bilge pump and high water alarm. We finally get to take measurements for our new sails and get the production ball rolling with a design consult with @PrecisionSailLoftVictoria . It's back to boat projects because they never really end. There are a few critical projects to complete before we can sail away. Shawn has a new aluminum compression post fabricated that we install. We decide no more used sails! Now we begin the process of purchasing new sails for Gone with the Wind from @PrecisionSailLoftVictoria. A new mainsail means a new Strong Track first to update our antiquated external track. In true Big Easy Sailing style, nothing goes as easy as it should and we discover an issue with our boom stay. We experience both the extreme highs and lows of boat life as we get prepared to sail around the Keys. We meet @SailingMissLoneStar for sundowners on Little Miss.
