All American Marine and the vessel owner SWITCH Maritime are pleased to announce the launch and operational trials of Sea Change, a 70-foot, 75-passenger zero-emissions, hydrogen fuel cell-powered, electric-drive ferry that will operate in the California Bay Area. This will be the first hydrogen fuel cell vessel in the US, representing a monumental step in the US maritime industry's transition to a sustainable future. The ferry was developed and constructed to demonstrate a pathway to commercialization for zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell marine technologies. While still working on permitting hydrogen fuel systems for maritime vessels with the US Coast Guard, the completed ferry will exhibit the viability of this zero-carbon ship propulsion technology for the commercial and regulatory communities.

All American Marine, with Birdon America, has successfully completed the rollover test for the first Motor Life Boat as part of Phase I of a contract to perform a Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) on a number of United States Coast Guard's (USCG) fleet of Motor Life Boats (MLB). Birdon America was awarded the prime contract to perform Service Life Extension work on all MLB's in the U.S. Coast Guard's Fleet, and has chosen AAM as it's West Coast partner to fulfill construction work as part of this program. The current in-service MLBs were designed by the USCG and built from 1997 to 2003. The 47-foot MLB is the Coast Guard's primary search-and-rescue platform operating in surf and heavy weather conditions. It has self-righting capability and the ability to operate in winds up to 50 knots, seas up to 30 feet, and surf up to 20 feet. The USCG's need for these unique capabilities in search-and-rescue, maritime law enforcement, and contingency response is a high priority due to their effectiveness on the water.

The Enhydra is an innovative, 600-passenger, hybrid-electric aluminum monohull, built by All American Marine for and Red and White Fleet in San Francisco. Designed by Nic de Waal of Teknicraft Design in Auckland, New Zealand, the 128 ft x 30 ft aluminum, monohull vessel is currently the largest lithium-ion battery, hybrid-electric powered vessel in North America built under USCG Subchapter K certification. The 600-passenger vessel is specifically designed for harbor tours of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. All American Marine partnered with BAE Systems to design and integrate the complete electric hybrid system. BAE supplied their HybriDrive propulsion system that includes a generator, propulsion power converter, house load power supply and control system. The generator is mounted to a variable speed Cummins QSL9 410 hp diesel engine. The system offers parallel hybrid powering of the AC traction motor from the generator, the batteries or both. The motor is coupled to the propulsion shaft via a reduction gear for thrust and increased propeller efficiency. AAM said that with this configuration, torque is immediately available for the propeller, and the speed can be precisely controlled. BAE Systems' HybriGen system has lower engine operating hours and is more streamlined than a conventional drive, requiring fewer parts, thus resulting in savings in both fuel consumption and maintenance costs. Simultaneously, the propulsion system provides a silent, emissions-free experience for recreational cruise excursions. The BAE HybridDrive system can automatically use full electric battery operation at slower speeds and when maneuvering in and out of the harbor with the Enhydra's two Veem Star four-blade props. At higher speeds, the generator will automatically engage and augment the additional power demands of the traction motor. All American Marine, Inc. and the Hanke family of Puget Sound Express are pleased to introduce the Saratoga, the newest member of the PSE whale watching fleet. The 73-foot, aluminum catamaran vessel was designed by Nic De Waal of Teknicraft Design in Auckland, New Zealand and built by All American Marine in Bellingham, WA. The "USCG Subchapter T" certified, high-speed catamaran has 2 asymmetrical semi-planing hulls, and an adjustable aluminum midship hydrofoil plus two aluminum aft foils, which allow the boat to achieve top speeds of 40+ knots. This design, coupled with finely-tuned, wave-piercing sickle bows, enables the boat to travel through both calm and rough water at full cruising speed while keeping underwater noise to a minimum. The Saratoga was designed from top to bottom for low fuel consumption at high speeds, a critical factor to the success of the daily whale watch tours originating out of Edmonds. The vessel also utilizes Hamilton Jet Drive control systems with four HJ364 water jets and MECS control systems, which are second to none in terms of maneuverability as well as fuel efficiency at higher speeds. "During sea trials, we went out with a specifically fully laden vessel, and the difference in terms of fuel consumption between light laden and fully laden was almost negligible" said De Waal. "We've done many years of research to develop a vessel design that's particularly low-wake, due in large part to our unique hydrofoil system that doesn't displace as much water and create waves as is the case with traditional hull design."
