On one of the remotest islands of San Blas, in the middle of nowhere? there is a restaurant. Ibin's beach restaurant. Built just over the water. Instead of fancy furniture - wooden tables and wooden benches. Corals and shells are the only one decorations. No electricity, no sweet water (his friends deliver water from the river on the mainland). And a fantastic view to the ocean. Every time when we anchor in Holandes cays we have a dinner in Ibin's restaurant. Yesterday was a special visit. We came to make a film about Ibin and his restaurant. He is such a sunny and creative guy! He learned to cook French cuisine in Panama City. He cooked for celebrities and politicians. He worked as a chef on a super yacht chartering in the Pacific. And now, as he said - thanks c&vid, he lost his job and decided to go back to San Blas. To the land he belongs to. Since 3 years he lives on the Banedup island, on the land of his family and cook for cruisers and charter tourists. In 2023 our life had an unexpected turn. Instead of sailing to Cuba we went to Europe. Guenther needed a treatment, so we spent there 6 months. Also we did a lot of travels - to Italy and in Austria. And.. We got married! But finally we came back to the place we belong too. To our catamaran and to the San Blas islands in Panama. In the last film we have been in the mainland Panama in Linton Bay, doing a lot of repairs, mainly on engine, doing some necessary maintenance and doing provisioning. In this film we came back to San Blas (Kuna Yala) and you'll see how we live from the sea when we're at least 2 days away from the nearest supermarket. We stocked up with all essentials for the next 3 months - flour, sugar, pasta, oil etc. Nearly every week comes a supply boat from the mainland. They bring us fresh fruits, vegetables, bear, cheese, butter, eggs. Snorkeling, hunting, baking bread - these are our everyday activity. Highlights of seafood recipes - Cazuela de mariscos and ceviche. The best part of the cruising life - gathering together, cooking together and eating together - especially with out good friends SY Victoria. Beach barbecue with Plucky from Sailing for Freedom. There is a rainy season now, but it is not really bad - sometimes it's rainy, but most of the time the weather is very nice, just not enough wind. On San Blas we started separating garbage - organic parts goes to the sea, fish like it. All paper and partly plastic we burn. The rest - beer cans, bottles, plastic bottles we keep and later will bring back to the mainland. In the end of the film you'll be astonished (as we were astonished too) we went to Nargana island to the hospital. Just imagine, in the middle of the nowhere there is a hospital with a very good equipped dentist practice. Beginning of July we sailed back from Kuna Yala to Panama mainland. On our trip to Colombia we overheated one of our engines and exhaust waterlock was totally burned down. 3 weeks of waiting for the spareparts and we finally got them. We also ordered a new Genoa instead of totally delaminated one and this one finally arrived too. We aren't marina people and we don't like to stay in the marina. Always prefer to stay at anchor where we have privacy, where we can jump to the water? but for overhaul of our engines we had to go to the marina. We had an idea that the engine was totally ok after overheating, but just to have a second opinion we wanted to check it with local mechanic. We made an overhaul of our engines and luckily they found out that two of the engine mounts were nearly broken. So we had to replace them. After long two weeks in the marina we were ready to go back to San Blas, Kuna Yala archipelago. We caught a pretty big blue fin tuna on the way and made 5 (five!) different meals out of it. Hola from Panama, Hola from one of the biggest crossroads. We're still in San Blas islands. It's not easy to leave this paradise, but it's time to go and soon we have to make a decision - where to go next. In the last 5,5 years we sail exactly half around the world. From Malaysia to Panama. In the first part of the film you see a glimpse to some spectacular moments of this adventure and in the second part we are sharing with you our thoughts about where to go next. April, 2017 we left Malaysia, Langkawi island. We crossed Malacca straight came to Sumatra, Indonesia. Did some small island hopping and left to cross the Indian Ocean. After short technical stop in Chagos we came to Madagascar. Madagascar was so beautiful, so we decided to spent more time there, but for the typhoon season we went to the main Africa, Tanzania. 6 months later on the way back we visited The Comores islands. Again another months in Madagascar. November 2018 we crossed notorious Mozambique Channel and after short weather stop in Bazaruto (Mozambique) arrived to Durban, South Africa. After rounding the Cape of Good Hope we went to west coast of Africa, Namibia. After 26 days on the way to cross the South Atlantic Ocean in July 2019 we arrived to Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. Then another 2500 nautical miles to Trinidad & Tobago. 2020. Lockdown in Grenada and 6 months on the boatyard in Carriacou. In June 2021 our catamaran was shining again. We went to Martinique to service a water maker, but our stay there was even shorter then we expected. The hurricane was coming to Martinique and we decided to flee down to Venezuelan coast and then straight to Colombia. 2022. Next stop - Panama and especially beautiful San Blas (Guna Yala) islands where we're now spending the Atlantic hurricane season. To know what is the next, what are our sailing plans watch our film. In our series The ultimate perfomance cruising catamaran. Know the truth we show you many examples of affordable, comfortable and fast sailing catamarans, talk with owners and tell you pros and cons of these boats. There are good discussions about catamaran life, lightweight construction, sailing speed in different wind conditions, advantages of ocean crossing on a light, fast and comfortable catamaran. In the seventh film of the series THE ULTIMATE PERFOMANCE CRUISING CATAMARAN, where we interviewed long term cruisers/liveaboard owners and made catamaran boat tours, we present Eric Lerouge's VIK 140 catamaran. His catamarans are well know for good speeds and comfortable sea rides. In Lemon Cays in the San Blas islands we at the end met a Lerouge performance catamaran. There are a lot of Lerouge cats out, but the others never had time for filming. Come on board with us to Philoxene and listen why the owners feel so safe on this boat, even in 50 knots of wind. A french-italian owners set the goal to sail around the world just in 2 years. At least this is the plan for now? This is 45 feet very light catamaran. She is first of all a good sea boat with wide beam, good buoyancy, short bridge-deck high above the water, minimum windage and she is unsinkable. She easily takes the ground on her trouble-free low-aspect keels which protect her hulls, rudders and propellers and are faired into the hulls curve of area. A long day of sailing, a 45 minutes trip in an overfilled chicken bus, one hour taxi ride to get just 500US$ cash. Yes, our life in San Blas paradise is wonderful, but one day we had to come down to the earth and think how we can get cash. San Blas (Kuna Yala) is a true paradise - did you ever see ATMs in paradise? So to get cash we had to sail to the mainland, back to civilisation. We arrived to Linton Bay and should go to Portobelo? But in the reality everuthing was not so easy? By the way, ATMs here at the Atlantic coast of Panama are so rare because they get frequently robbed. If you want to come to San Blas and cruise here stock up very well with cash. Later on we met here again our friends from Life on Jupiter and had a adventurous trip through a small channel in the mangroves. In our series The ultimate perfomance cruising catamaran. This is the sixth film of the series THE ULTIMATE PERFOMANCE CRUISING CATAMARAN, where we interviewed long term cruisers/liveaboard owners and made catamaran boat tours. This time in the San Blas islands, Panama we met Gerhard, a proud owner of Catana 471 catamaran. What is so special on this boat? Daggerboards, high bridge deck clearance, tulip shaped bows, asymmetrical hulls, centred weights and enourmous sails area: yes, it is the ideal combination for a true performance cruiser. The excellent seaworthiness of the Catana 471 has been proven by all owners on the seven seas. Vinylester barrier make a solid and safe base to rely on. All lines come back to the safety of the cockpit on an electrical winch so there is no need to crawl to the mast foot to do your manoeuvres. This boat is extremely easy to single hand. We bet you'll ask - Why do we see Umadum in Madagascar if they have been there in 2017? The answer is easy - we never had time to make a film about our beloved island Madagascar, which maybe is one of the best cruising grounds of the world. Let's look back to the time of 2017. To our normal world with the lemurs, with the whales, with a classical concert on the top of the moutain, with local carnivals and fiestas. And to the question why you should take your time while you are cruising. We started the Indian ocean crossing in Malaysia, sailed to Sumatra and down till we found the wind and then the real ocean crossing started. After 4000 nautical miles at sea we arrived to the red island Madagascar. The northern tip of Madagascar, Cap d'Ambre, is well knowing for pretty high waves, because of two strong currents meeting there. In this film Guenther is sharing his tips and tricks how to round this cape easyly. After 3 days of rest at anchor in one of the northern bays we started sailing south - good wind, flat seas, what a fun to sail there. Sometimes we alternated our course to sail near to the reefs for very good and succeful fishing. Most of our time we spent around Nosy Be island, on the northwestern side of Madagascar. All transportation is done by traditional local sailing boats - there are no engines, only sails. And these people are very very good sailors. Everything was colorful there - markets, clothes, food, music, dances. And everything was full of contrasts - one day we went to the classical music concert on the top of the mountain and few days later we were guests at local fiesta in one of the small villages. So, take a deap breath and dive with us into this beautiful world of Madagascar. You will see - why it's so important to sail fast, but to cruise slow - you will never get all this experience if you rush from one anchorage to another. Take you time. It's nearly the same catamaran you know from SV La Vagabonde: the hulls are the same shape, but the boat is much lighter and therefore much faster. A lot of weight saving carbon fiber, rotating carbon mast, daggerboards and numerous special gear. This performance catamaran is 48 ft long, weights only 8 tons empty. We meet with Eric and Martine in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia and talk with them about their Outremer 4X and show a lot of sailing video. We sailed down to Colombia from Martinique non-stop, dodging hurricane Elsa. Here you can find our film about this exhausting trip: https://youtu.be/2xqFB86KHC4 We have several reasons to be in Colombia: - it is a beautiful South American country; - the arrival protocol for sailors is very easy in COVID times - no quarantine, no PCR tests required; - we were waiting for Tali's daughter Ksenia to arrive. Due to the last travel restrictions we didn't see her for the last 2,5 years; - Tali's passport. The old one is full of stamps and will expire soon. After very quick and easy checking in Tali went to Bogota to apply for her new passport in the Russian Consulate in Bogota and to see her good friend Ana. We were told that the new passport will be ready on 3 months or maybe more. In Bogota it was really chilly and rainy, anout 10 degrees, because the city is situated in the mountains at an altitude of 2500 meters. And when she came back to Cartagena the temperatire difference was about 20 degrees. In a few days we picked up Ksenia from the airort of Cartagena and sailed down 20 nm to Isla Baru, Cienaga de cholon and Islas del Rosario. Clear water and wonderful holiday feeling. After sailing more than 20 000 nm we decided to haul out Umadum in Carriacou (Grenada). Was it the best place for refitting a catamaran? Now we can say - NO! And you'll see why. We expected to stay on the yard for about 3 monts, but in turned into a daymare for 6 months. So many projects have done on our performance cruising catamaran: - Fairing the hulls with 2 parts marine epoxy - Spray painting the hulls - Painting decks, cockpit, salon, toilet, one cabin - Repairing one engine - Replacing rudder bearing - Replacing standing rigging - Applying Coppercoat Antifouling - Making new storage shelves - Replacing all the thru-hull fittings - Installing in new Lavac toilet instead of not working Jabsco - Making a new mainsail cover - Making a gallery on the boom to support the mainsail - Replacing anods - Resealing all side hatches - Servicing dinghy outboard engine - And dozens other minor boatworks So you can use this list as the essential sailboat repair checklist. And everything worked in so called GMT time - GRENADA MAYBE TIME. Which means - waiting, waiting, waiting. Waiting for the boat spare parts, waiting for workers to come and work. Finally after 176 days on the boatyard in Carriacou we decided to stop rennovation of our catamaran and launch the boat. Not all painting work on the boat has been completed, but enough is enough. We were very happy with painting the hulls, but 6 months were more than enough for our painter to finish all work. So we decided that we'll finish the rest of painting by ourselves later. Why? With expected winds up to 100 knots and high waves Hurricane Elsa was expected to run over southern Martinique. Yes, we just went out from the boatyard and now are in hurricane avoidance mode. A strong tropical wave (soon to become HURRICANE ELSA) has left the coast of Africa last week and headed straight for Martinique and St. Lucia... very unusual for the begining of July, but this is how it is. We have to decide in just 2 hours - to stay put in Martinique and risk the boat or to dodge approaching hurricane and have a not really pleasant trip. And we decided to sail down to Colombia and departed St Anne just in a few hours. Our hurricane avoiding tactic was to sail as fast as we can down south near to the Venezuelan coast to be out of the reach of Hurricane Elsa. We put two reefs on the main which still gave us 10 knots of speed, but keep us safe in coming squals, especially at night. In this conditions we're happy to have a fast performance sailing catamaran - we should sail fast and we want to be safe. It took us 6,5 days to flee from hurricane Elsa. We had everything - wind 0-28 knots from all 360 degrees directions, enormous swell and fierce waves. We were flying, surfing, rolling, banging, shaking and had dozens of flying fish on the deck. And finally this weird trip from Martinique to Colombia done. Umadum safely anchored in Cartagena de Indias .
