We're back at Tarka after aa much needed mental break in Hawaii. It's a cold return to North Carolina, though, and we were totally unprepared....what's new? We're glad to be back aboard and we're quickly getting to work to get Tarka back in the water!!!

We had some lofty plans before borders started to close and made us rethink our summer plans. We ended us flying to Maui, Hawaii to stay with Spencer's parents and Spencer decided to start to build a James Wharram designed plywood catamaran. It's the 14 foot Hitia model. This week we have a mechanic come and do some tests on the old Perkins motor we have. This is a big deal as what he says will determine if we are going to repower. That would mean lots of money and weeks in a yard, so we are nervous to see what he has to say. We take off from Vero Beach with some old friends you all know and head to South Carolina. This means a 2 night, 3 day passage which are the worst as it doesn't give your body time to adjust to the sleep schedule. With squalls coming in around us we are exhausted! When we finally to make landfall in Georgetown, South Carolina we are welcomed by hoards or Horse Flies! We attempt to leave Vero Beach but as we approach the fuel dock a horrible sound comes out of the engine room. When we take a look we find the prop shaft has disconnected from the motor and the bolts are trying to rip apart the transmission. It's a rush job, but Spencer and our friend Brad start at 9pm and 7 hours later, at 4am, the rear main seal is replaced in our Perkins 4108. It took a lot! Removing the engine, shifting the prop so water is pouring in and getting the transmission out. It's a BIG job and they slay it. We're sailing Little Chicken today, Baby Beluga's boat! We sail out to a reef in the Florida Keys and dawn our tanks and jump in right from the sailboat!
