Believe it or not, this ONE TINY little hose clamp is all that’s keeping our boat from potentially sinking to the bottom. It’s part of our centerboard operation, and unfortunately there’s not much we can do to improve it, except to ensure the clamps and hoses are in good condition. So we tear the whole thing apart and make sure all the bits & pieces are up to snuff. There’s heaps more in this one… We prep our mast and rigging for re-stepping, test a new water filtration system, and take measurements for our new headsail from Precision Sails. Our sailing off-season — driving around in Chip, hanging out in the Great Lakes, sailing, surfing & swimming — has been a fun diversion from the boat. Now it’s time to get back to Florida. We’re slowly making our way in our van, Chip, around Lake Huron. In this episode we leave Manitoulin Island, hopping a ferry to Tobermory. With Soulianis on the hard in Florida, we take our van up to The North Channel of Lake Huron and hop back on a sailboat! We meet up with two couples who are seasoned sailors (our “boat parents” from Episode 13) who take us on a tour of their favorite spots over five days. We sail, paddle, hike, and cliff-jump. The water is crystal clear, the air smells of pine. Hundred year-old trees grow atop boulders. Multi-colored lichen blanket the rocks, squishy mosses cover the hilly forest floor. The Miserable Mile is a stretch of super busy waterway near Ft Myers with an incredibly narrow channel. Powerboats fly this way and that, wakes churn the water, and straying from the channel even a few feet means running hard aground. In short, it’s quite aptly named! We have a grand time sailing regardless, with the sun out and lovely wind. After pulling into a slip in Ft Myers Beach, we start fixing up our engine, Mr. Beke, who’s in need of some maintenance and repairs. Getting prepped for our next overnight sail — to Key West! Imagine what one week of cruising looks like, and you’ll never get two identical weeks. BUT— if we had to pick one, these 7 days are pretty typical of our cruising life. We spent some time at anchor, and one day at the dock. We enjoy some gorgeous sunshine, and run from a storm. We travel some days, others we stay put. We sail when the wind blows and motor when we it doesn’t. We get some work done, a workout in, and a little time at the beach. And we celebrate Kirk’s birthday — even though that doesn’t happen every week (which he’s certainly relieved about, though I would love more excuses to go out for ice cream!) Hope you enjoy! After months spent mostly at docks, we venture out to live on the hook (which happens to be less than a block away from a grocery store, but hey, baby steps). This one has a little bit of everything. We pick up where we left off in the previous episode, with Lauren cooking breakfast underway, and watching a pod of dolphins leap in our bow wave. We finish the second day of our Gulf of Mexico crossing, work on a boat project, travel the ICW, and become marooned on our own boat — but are saved thanks to the good nature of two fellow sailors. It’s finally starting to feel like we’re cruising! In this episode, we prep for our longest sail yet: 190 miles from St. Joseph Point to Clearwater. We give you a peak inside our ditch kit, install a MOB (man overboard) device in each of our lifejackets, and test our PLB (personal locating beacon). Then, we set sail! We have an amazing downwind wing-on-wing daysail to our overnight anchorage, spend a horrible night on the hook and wake up early to get tossed around in rolly seas. The first part of our passage is marked by visits from dozens of dolphins, and we don’t see another ship for over 24 hours while crossing the Gulf of Mexico, all alone. Hope you enjoy! We set off on our first sail in the Gulf of Mexico! After a day trip to Pensacola through the GICW (Gulf Intracoastal Waterway) with Kirk’s pops, we visit Destin via car to inquire about Destin pass. We were keen on stopping with the boat because it seemed like a fun town to explore, but the pass is notoriously shallow with shifting sands.
