Waves in Caves! Dangerous combination on our exploration of the Rocky Dundas Caves in Exuma Bahamas. We couldn?t leave our Compass Cay anchorage without exploring Rocky Dundas. Two caves, that you can only enter underneath a rock ledge await exploration. We went at low tide to make entry easiest, but the waves were a little rough. The surf made it super difficult to get out of the water once inside the cave. Stephen and I are no strangers to adventure challenges, but this was exceptionally difficult. We had to pull ourselves up by holding on to jagged rocks. Once in, it was very beautiful and the dome was probably 30 ft high. We then set out to figure out how to exit the cave. Incoming surf would just push us back into the jagged rock. We finally decided the best side would be where we had the most holding. In the meantime, two other sailors ventured in from SV Paper Sails. They were as surprised by how rough it was as well. The first cave is marked by an arch - there is also a mooring ball to keep your dinghy safe. What?s inside? Walls lined with colorful algae, stalactites and stalagmites, fossilized beetles, and other saline. In 2011, David Copperfield installed an underwater sculpture 12 ft deep at his private island - Rudder Cay - in the Exuma Cays Bahamas for the amusement of his island guests and snorkelers. Called "The Musician", it includes a full-scale stainless steel mermaid and a replica of a Steinway concert grand piano. Sculpture artist: Jason deCaires Taylor. Stephen and I explored the Norman's Pond Cave in Exumas. 240 ft deep! We seem to have a thing for Bahamanian caves this season:-). Thanks to @CatamaranImpi for the intel so we could find this! According to Cavebiology.com, Norman's Pond Cave is an inland blue hole cave located near the northern tip of Norman's Pond Cay. The entrance to this fracture cave is a 2 m wide by 8 m long sinkhole situated just above the high tide line. The cave consists of a collapse-floored fissure up to 8 m wide that extends under the island and trends toward the open waters of Exuma Sound. A large entrance cavern is followed by a narrower section at 40 m depth that in turn opens onto a second room with a dome in the ceiling and a pit in the floor. Two deeper breakdown choked passages extend off the second room. While sailing along visiting all the Ragged Islands, we happened across this little cay that seemed to have some interesting abandoned buildings on it. Upon research, we found that it was the location of one of MrBeast's Challenge Giveaways. To celebrate hitting 100 million subscribers, Jimmy held his competition on the remote island of Ben?s Cay, Ragged Island, Bahamas! So, we visited the private island recently while sailing and anchoring nearby in Johnson?s Cay. I?m sure he won?t mind - after all, he runs his ultra successful enterprise out of Greenville NC! Us Carolina folks stick together! And I?m sure he won?t mind the extra publicity! It wasn?t easy to get on the island as it was surrounded by sharp coral, and the dock was no longer usable, but the production crew had carved out one section that I walked up to get on the island. Here?s how the challenges went. 1: 100 people tried to build a fire with sticks. 2: those 50 winners competed in red light-green light race. 3: those 10 winners chose a plank on the pirate ship that wouldn?t fall in. 4: those 5 winners treasure hunted for the big play button in a case, and the island contract. Mallory won! So, MrBeast gifted her Ben?s Cay. What did she do with it? Nothing. She had no clue what to do with this island, so MrBeast bought it back from her. And here it sits today, just like many other uninhabited islands in the Bahamas. While anchored at Oven Rock, our last cave exploration of the season was the Gemstone Pool Cave while sailing along Guana Cay in the Exumas Bahamas. We hiked a mile to see the pool cave. It was the BEST cave we have seen all season! From CaveAtlas.com The entrance to Oven Rock Cave is situated in a hillside on Great Guana Cay. From the 15 m wide, 2.5 m high entrance, a 40 m long dry chamber descends over breakdown to a tidal anchialine lake. The 1.5 m deep lake extends around the sides and rear of this chamber. An underwater room trending off from the lake is well decorated with large stalagmites at depths to 9 m. A second room, located on the far side of the first, has a small air bell in the ceiling at one end but dips to 17 m depth at the far extreme. From this point, a collapsed-floored passage is followed by a low bedding plane passage reaching depths to 22 m. #catamaransailing #leopard48catamaran #sailing #Canouan #mandarinoriental #sandylaneyachtclub After Bequia, we headed to Canouan, a little known, enigmatic luxury island in the Grenadines where the experience at Sandy Lane Yacht Club was quite unexpected and surreal.? We left Bequia in a BIG hurry when a very rare western swell came in which was caused by a storm coming down from the north.? Boats were rocking and swinging and it wouldn?t be long before we would get hit! So,? the next island south - hopefully away from the swell - was Canouan. "Canouan" comes from the Arawakan word for turtle.? The Arawakan?s were the original island inhabitants.? We were hoping to see some of the red footed tortoises during our stay. Canouan is one of the Caribbean?s most up and coming luxury destinations. Located in the heart of the Grenadines, less than 20 miles south of Mustique and 110 miles west of Barbados, the 3 square-mile island is surrounded by small bays and coves, secluded white sand beaches and one of the Caribbean?s largest coral reefs, offering incredible diving and snorkeling. It is said to be the island where billionaires go to get away from millionaires.?? Most of the northern part of the island is private resorts - Mandarin Oriental and Canouan Estate Resort with a Jim Fazio designed 18-hole course. ? ? There is not a lot here for people to visit if you are not on a resort. You do have easy access to Tobago Cays, Union Island, and Mayreau for more exploration. Sandy Lane Yacht Club We headed straight to Sandy Lane Yacht Club,? a luxury marina and resort, to hide for a little while, on the south side of Glossy Bay.? Brand new docks, modern amenities, shops, restaurants and totally protected. The executive airport is right behind the marina, making it convenient for the jet set, but a little noisy and you do smell the diesel at times if you are staying on board. We enjoyed the beach and the pool and tried to snorkel the reefs, but the swell was too rough. Charlestown - Friendship Bay We did visit the capital city of Charlestown in Friendship Bay. Beautiful waters, especially by L'Anse Guyac, a nice place usually to anchor by the resort there - also owned by Mandarin Oriental. ?In town, we did not find much worthwhile besides the Soho Beach House resort.? Is Canouan Worth the Visit? In 10 years, we predict this island will be even more developed by the resorts. We did find our visit worthwhile. If we had more time, we also would have hiked around the island more. If the normal trade winds were blowing, instead of the western swell, we imagine we would have been able to snorkel the large expanse of reefs. Maybe next time.... #catamaransailing #leopard48catamaran #sailing #unionisland #grenadines Union Island we feel has everything a sailing cruiser needs. From airport to taxis, food, peaceful bays, towns worth walking in and more. We left Mayreau Island for the short 4 mile sail to Union Island, eager for more great times on these islands! We decided to start at Frigate Bay in Ashton Harbour and then head over to Chatham, before we ended our stay at Clifton and Happy Island! This way we could check out at Clifton, as this was our last stop in Grenadines. Ashton Harbour was more than we expected! Large bay with cliffs on one side and the town on the other. In the middle, mangroves, and the defunct marina. One of the first things we did was a dinghy tour through the marina that never was. The marina was supposed to hold 300 boats but the project died after only a year, leaving a clogged up harbor that was growing algae due to the constrained water flow. There is a super interesting story about the rebirth of this area here. https://www.birdscaribbean.org/2019/11/ashton-lagoon-a-joyful-story-of-restoration-and-rebirth/. It is well worth a read to understand the damage that unchecked development can do to an area. A recent restoration effort built a walkway over some of the waterway that seems to be maintained for day trip boaters to hike around the area. We did some snorkeling while in the marina waters and did see some interesting fish but not pretty coral. Our second day, we hiked Mount Taboi. There are actually two vantage points-one about halfway up at 500 ft, the other at about 1000 ft. We chose the 500 ft one. From there we could see Mayreau, Palm, Tobago Cays, Clifton and of course Frigate Bay. On our way back, we ran into a Sea Moss farmer. Sea moss has been used in traditional medicine for hundreds of years for its role in?boosting immunity, thyroid health, and heart health.? Leaving Frigate Harbour, we headed to Chatham. We experienced super calm waters in this bay. And spotted a Sunroof Eco 70 - solar powered to the max. https://sunreef-yachts.com/en/launched/sunreef-70-eco-one-planet/ We spent some time at Tenuti resort - highly recommended! Dinner there was fantastic, but since it was so calm, bug spray was needed. https://www.tenutachathambay.com/ In stark contrast, the beach had Tenuti Resort on one end, owned by an Italian investor and your beach bars and shacks on the rest of it. The beach even treated us to a rare site - krill shrimp washed on shore. While in Chatham, we were assisted by very kind local boat guys who knew where to get the fresh produce we had been craving! Next stop was Clifton Harbor, took a mooring ball right behind the reef - protected but a great view. And of course Happy Island - the bar built on conch shells. A bit noisy on the weekends but it was nice being outside the busy bay. Clifton had plenty of restaurants to choose from, cute places that seemed to cater to us tourists. They had a produce stand market area where we were able to source some of the food we were needing. We even mapped our Tsunami Hazard Zone out during out walk through town. Lastly, we visited Sparrow?s Beach Club on the other side of Clifton Harbor in Richmond Bay. Beautiful beach but more of a day anchorage. While in Clifton, we also watched the kite boarders once the wind finally picked up! Interestingly enough, Stephen?s uncle actually built a church here on Union Island back in the 90s. #catamaransailing #leopard48catamaran #sailing #Dominica #volcanicspring #wildrivers #waterfall Lost in the Unspoiled Rainforest Jungle in Dominica. It felt like we were lost in another world of Waterfalls, Wild Rivers, Volcanic Springs, and Rusty Rocks. Dominica - the Nature Island - lies in the Eastern Caribbean. We will take you with us on our tour to see: Syndicate WaterFalls and Trail Calibishie Red Rocks The Chocolate Factory Cold Souffriere And our favorite - the Indian River. We drove past Portsmouth shorelines, residences, the old medical college, a plant farm on the way to the waterfalls. (BTW there are 9 volcanoes on Dominica). Syndicate Falls are over 100 feet tall. It is located at the foothills of Dominica's tallest mountain ? Morne Diablotin ? and close to the edge of the Picard River Gorge. The 205 acres of land, which is known as the ?Syndicate Preserve?, was incorporated into the national park when the latter was established in January 2000. The falls were quite beautiful and we were the only ones there! At the visitor center, they even brewed drinks from the rainforest?s plants and we were able to sample them. The next stop was Red Rocks in Calibishie on the eastern windward side of the island. Very unique place - very different for the island. It was formed when a fast moving lava flow ran down and ignited everything in its path straight to the sea. It boiled the ocean, kicked up steam, cooled and left a slate grey earth. Over time, the iron in the earth oxidized - it rusted - and that?s how Red Rocks came to be. We had Lunch at Coral Reef restaurant with its panoramic view of Red Rocks, and Dominica?s longest coral reef where we watched the locals fish. Next stop the Point Baptiste chocolate factory where they grow, harvest, ferment, cook and blend the chocolate. It all began with a love story between Lennox Napier and Elma Gordon Cumming. They decided to leave England and the aristocratic conventional milieu with whom they belonged, to live a rural bohemian life in the island of Dominica that they had fallen in love with at first sight in 1930. Next stop is the only white sand beach on the island in Woodford Hills. Back in the van, we passed by a mountain being torn down. When we asked why, we found out that the materials were being used to build an airport. Actually the Chinese have the contract for building the airport and their trucks passed us by multiple times almost running us off the road. Next we drove up and down hills so steep it felt like a roller coaster ride on the way to the Cold Souffriere, a cold sulphur spring bubbling in the middle of a volcanic crater within Morne Aux Diables. Hot sulphur springs are much more common, but this is quite a unique site. What was really cool about this is that as we really looked around, you could tell you were in the middle of a former volcano. Hills on each side formed a circle around where we hiked. Indian River takes you down the wildest River in Dominica. Unfortunately, it is being threatened now by some development occurring nearby where they are filling in the land, causing water levels in the river to rise. We stop at the Bush Bar for a drink and walk the ginger lily gardens. Last but not least, we wanted to show you the difference between the Portsmouth and Roseau anchorages. Sailing our Catamaran through New York City and navigating the East River was an unforgettable moving experience. It made us really appreciate the freedom we have as Americans to go where we please when we please. Jennifer Bell (Stephen?s sister) joined us in celebration of her birthday. Stephen and I were also celebrating our Anniversary! As Mick Jagger sang, "Bite the Big Apple - Don?t Mind the Maggots". There is a bit of planning required so that you hit the tidal currents at the right time. Our plan was as follows.
