This is a video of the interior of our 1989 Hallberg Rassy 42E 'Asterie'. We have been sailing her and living aboard since July 2019. We began our journey on Asterie in Eastbourne, UK and have sailed all the way down the Atlantic coast of Europe to the Algarve, Portugal. We dipped our noses into the Med last summer but are currently back enjoying the Algarve and its beautiful weather! 1989 HALLBERG-RASSY 42E, HULL No. 227 Asterie is currently located in the Algarve with her current owners who have set her up for long term cruising by installing solar and a wind generator, a new 25kg Rocna anchor, a new 3.2m dinghy with a 9.9hp outboard engine, and an offshore flare pack amongst many other upgrades onboard. This classic Hallberg-Rassy 42E is a true bluewater cruiser providing excellent sea-keeping and she has a build quality that is renowned in the sailing world. She provides 6-8 comfortable berths in three cabins and has 2 separate heads. There is wheel steering with a traditional long keel and she is extremely well-equipped. Asterie is powered by a Beta 75hp diesel engine (fitted in 2011).
How We Saved Money and Bought a Sailboat: 20 Real-Life Tips! (Money Series) Sailing Mutiny We have been asked a lot about the financial side of sailing / cruising (How did we afford to sail away? how did we save up to go travelling? What do you do about money? How much does it cost to sail around the world? How much does it cost to buy a sailboat?) so we've decided to do a mini-series to help anyone that is thinking about or wants to get out there and go sailing! This video is starting at the very beginning - we talk about all the changes we made BEFORE we even bought a boat and left. We thought about all the things we did (or stopped doing!) to make our dream a reality and go debt free travelling. They fell into three categories: SAVE, EARN and SELL. This video talks about 20 ways that we saved money through small changes (with a few big ones thrown in there too!) Since filming the video, I've thought of a few more things so I'll add them into the blog post for you. Some of these suggestions might seem obvious but I'm hoping you'll find something in here that you haven't thought of that will help you get out there cruising sooner! All of these changes that we made added up so we were able to save hundreds of pounds a month - they also helped us adjust to our new lives as we learned to live with less in more ways than one. Even if you don't end up cruising, some of these suggestions may improve your quality of life and allow you to free up money for more important things. ____________________________________________________________________ Don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss our next episode and ring that bell so you receive a notification when it goes live! https://www.youtube.com/SailingMutiny ____________________________________________________________________ We're on Patreon! Whilst we've been sharing our adventure on Facebook the past week or so, we realised that we haven't properly introduced ourselves yet! So here we are to put that right. We talk about who we are and where we're from (anyone heard of a little town in Shropshire called Oswestry??). We share our reasons WHY we decided to give everything up, buy a sailboat and sail off into the sunset to go and explore Northern Europe (and beyond!) We've had some pretty compelling reasons why we should do it such as illnesses and losses. We decided to trade in living to work for working to live instead. We share why we're travelling on a sailboat and not any other way (you don't want to miss Scrappy's introduction in this bit!). Having your dog onboard a yacht is a great way to travel with them. Find out who and what inspired us. Why we LOVE living aboard our floating home, having our dog onboard with us and our thoughts on if we made the right decision or not to sell everything and sail away! There are so many reasons why we decided to rebel against normality. From having to face a fatal brain tumour in the family to becoming a teacher with depression and anxiety to having mental health issues whilst working for the emergency services and being diagnosed with severe PTSD. Instead of continuing a life of having to deal with all that, we decided to become a sailing couple and go sailing Northern Europe and live life on board a yacht. This is our story of why we sold up and sailed away. The mental health issues haven't stopped but given the choice of travelling and sailing with PTSD or attempting to deal with it on land with everything else that goes along with it, you can see why we chose to sail away! I don't think mental health issues are discussed enough in our society. Sharing them is half the battle. It's not like having a broken leg that everyone can see. Instead, you face a battle with yourself in your head every waking moment that other people just can't comprehend. There are so many people in the emergency services that suffer but just don't get the help they need. From the ambulance service to the fire service to the Police. They see things every day that build up over time and without proper help to support them, it can cause long-term damaging PTSD which affects everyday lives in so many ways. This trip is our attempt to help ourselves and get out of the rat race so that we can begin to heal. We go much deeper into our story on our website so if you'd like to find out more, please follow the links below. 8] Exploring Honfleur, France and a ride on a carousel with some drunken sailors | Sailing Mutiny In this episode, we have a short sail from Le Havre to Honfleur on the French Coast of Normandy. We have our first French lock to contend with before we are able to berth on the outer visitor's pontoon and go exploring. Honfleur is a quintessential, picturesque French town that has inspired countless artists. We both fell in love with the place and thoroughly enjoyed our stay here...especially the evening where we tried out the town's carousel. SNEAK PREVIEW: SUMMER 2018!!! ***We did not approach the seals - they approached us. We just snorkelled around on the surface and watched from a distance (unless they came up to us!) We made sure we were calm and moved carefully so we didn't disturb them - we also made sure that we didn't get too close to the ones digesting their food on the rocks. Before we went swimming we did a lot of research on what to do and what not to do and took lead from the boat that runs snorkelling trips on a daily basis out to these islands.*** ____________________________________________________________________ Dave and I were lucky enough to get calm enough weather to anchor in a little bay off Great Ganilly in the Eastern Isles of Scilly and be surrounded by grey seals! We thought it would be rude not to jump in and go for a snorkel to see what we could see. Our minds were blown! They were so graceful and inquisitive under water. A couple got incredibly close and one even came right up for a good sniff and a nudge! At the time, I barely caught a glimpse of the seal as it kept swimming behind and underneath me but I felt it there and couldn't believe my eyes when I watched the footage back! It was truly a once in a lifetime experience and I literally couldn't hold in my excitement after it swam away (listen closely towards the end! 9] Sailing to Cherbourg, Exploring the City, and a New Dinghy and Outboard | Sailing Mutiny This is a jam-packed episode! Join us as we sail from Honfleur to Barfleur for an overnight stop in an anchorage before the swell forces us to leave and sail to Cherbourg on the French Coast. Cruising Northern France continues! We spent two weeks berthed in Port Chantereyne Cherbourg in Manche, Normandy. (Port de Plaisance de Cherbourg-Octeville). During our time in Cherbourg, we walked up to have a look around the Liberation Museum, celebrated both of our birthdays with raclette and had a tour of the surrounding area from Julien (our new friend!) where we took in Omonville and the smallest port in France; Port Racine. We also got ourselves a new dinghy and outboard as the ones that came with the boat needed replacing - we had lots of fun testing these out around the marina! My Mum came over for a flying visit, we found new ways to entertain ourselves onboard and treated ourselves to some folding bikes for our birthdays! Come aboard our 1974 Dufour 34 for a boat tour to see where we have been living since May 2017 whilst exploring Northern Europe. So far, she has taken us from Grimsby down to Lowestoft and across the North Sea to the Netherlands. She then took us up the North Sea Canal to Amsterdam and the Markenmeer beyond before heading back out to sea to follow the Dutch coast South to France. We then spent two months last season exploring the North and North West of France before wintering in Jersey. Last year we crossed the English Channel from Jersey to Falmouth and been across to the Isles of Scilly twice on her. We spent last winter in Falmouth and have stayed in the local area since then to explore it properly. Falmouth has an excellent sailing community and there are plenty of protected anchorages within a short sailing distance that we have been enjoying since our arrival. If you'd like to see interior photographs, her specs and more please visit https://www.sailingmutiny.com/the-boat/. ____________________________________________________________________ To keep up to date on where we are right now and what we're up to, join us over on our social media channels: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingmutiny Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailingmutiny Twitter: https://twitter.com/sailingmutiny Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.co.uk/sailingmutiny ____________________________________________________________________ Our website is now up and running! Couldn't wait to share this one with you! We were lucky enough to have eight wild dolphins join us on our sail along the North coast of France going past Brittany on our way South. They swam with us alongside and on our bow for 10 minutes. It was an amazing (and quite magical!) experience! Here is a snippet of them swimming with us. There is more footage but I'm going to keep it back for the main weekly video. So we have made it safely across the North Sea! It took us around 20 hours to get to Ijmuiden Seaport Marina from Lowestoft and was a much better sail than our previous one! We had a couple of nights to recharge our batteries then we began our journey into the Netherlands canal system. We continued our journey towards Amsterdam going through Kleine Sluis by Ijmuiden to get us down to the correct water level. It was a relaxing journey down the super wide canal and Scrappy came out to enjoy it with us. Amsterdam was reached after about a 3 hour journey and we squeezed ourselves in Sixhaven Marina opposite Amsterdam Central Station. A 5 minute walk from Sixhaven gave us access to a free ferry across the canal to the city centre. There was SO much to see and do - we spent hours exploring! We throughly enjoyed a meatball sandwich from 'Mister Meatball' - highly recommend a visit here - and wandered down the streets lining the many canals of Amsterdam. Numerous 'coffeeshops' were passed and hundreds of stunning buildings. During our stay in Amsterdam there was a very impressive thunderstorm. The recording of this is probably my favourite part of the video! Check it out at 11:37. Further exploration of Amsterdam led me past Anne Franks's house and the almighty Westerkerk - Anne could hear the bells from her attic room and they provided her with some comfort. After we had exhausted ourselves, we decided to keep heading North up towards the Markermeer. Dave found us a beautiful anchorage just outside of Hoorn for our first attempt at anchoring out! ____________________________________________________________________ Read our Sailing Travel Journal entries here: IJmuiden: https://www.sailingmutiny.com/seaport-marina-ijmuiden/ Sixhaven: https://www.sailingmutiny.com/sixhaven-marina-amsterdam/ ____________________________________________________________________ Subscribe to our channel so you don't miss the next episode!: https://www.youtube.com/SailingMutiny ____________________________________________________________________ Find us on Social Media Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingmutiny Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailingmutiny/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/sailingmutiny Website: www.sailingmutiny.com ____________________________________________________________________ Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/sailingmutiny ____________________________________________________________________ Thank you very much to the people that created the music used in this video. We made it safely to Lowestoft after a very long, rough journey from Grimsby! We were all very pleased to arrive at 2am and we quickly crashed out into our beds! The next morning we sorted out the main halyard which had become wrapped around the radar reflector and then lost up the mast when we tried to free it...note to self...always attach a rope to something that goes up (a weight is not enough!!) or it probably won't come down! I was chuffed though as I'd been dying to go up the mast!! :-D During our stay in Lowestoft we went exploring and ended up in Oulton Broad where we were lucky enough to catch a speed boat race on the lake! Scrappy enjoyed a good run in the park to burn off some energy and a good roll too in the grass! After a short stay and some fish, chips and ice cream for tea we headed out across the North Sea towards The Netherlands and had a much better sail. The second half was a bit rolly but we made it after 20 hours into Ijmuiden Marina. Now the adventure really begins...we have made it to our first country abroad! Join us next week where we enter the canal system, explore Amsterdam and spend our very first night at anchor! ____________________________________________________________________ Read our Sailing Travel Journal entries here: Lowestoft: https://www.sailingmutiny.com/royal-norfolk-suffolk-yacht-club-lowestoft/ IJmuiden: https://www.sailingmutiny.com/seaport-marina-ijmuiden/ ____________________________________________________________________ Subscribe to our channel so you don't miss the next episode!: https://www.youtube.com/SailingMutiny ____________________________________________________________________ Find us on Social Media Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingmutiny Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailingmutiny/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/sailingmutiny Website: www.sailingmutiny.com ____________________________________________________________________ We're on Patreon! This is the second episode sharing our adventure! This week we tested out our dodgy dinghy, our miniature Jack Russell - Scrappy - went for an accidental swim, we took him for a walk in the park and got Baremka (our 1974 Dufour 34) ready for the next stage of our adventure - sailing her from Grimsby down to Lowestoft! ____________________________________________________________________ Read our Sailing Travel Journal entries here: Grimsby: https://www.sailingmutiny.com/humber-cruising-association-grimsby/ Lowestoft: https://www.sailingmutiny.com/royal-norfolk-suffolk-yacht-club-lowestoft/ ____________________________________________________________________ Subscribe to our channel so you don't miss the next episode!: https://www.youtube.com/SailingMutiny ____________________________________________________________________ Find us on Social Media Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingmutiny Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailingmutiny/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/sailingmutiny Website: www.sailingmutiny.com ____________________________________________________________________ We're on Patreon! We have finally started our adventure! This epic trip has been 5+ years in the making but we have finally bought, moved onto and begun sailing our new home (Baremka) for the next few years!! Baremka is a 1974 Dufour 34 sailboat. We intend to head over to Holland to begin with and then work our way South down to the Med before deciding where we want to go next!! This episode shows us going out for our first sail on the River Humber before we sailed up to Hull city centre for a short stay and exploration of the area. ____________________________________________________________________ Read our Sailing Travel Journal entries here: Grimsby: https://www.sailingmutiny.com/humber-cruising-association-grimsby/ Hull: https://www.sailingmutiny.com/hull-marina-kingston-upon-hull/ ____________________________________________________________________ Subscribe to our channel so you don't miss the next episode!: https://www.youtube.com/SailingMutiny ____________________________________________________________________ Find us on Social Media Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingmutiny Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailingmutiny/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/sailingmutiny Website: www.sailingmutiny.com ____________________________________________________________________ We're on Patreon!
