After a relaxing Christmas and New years with family it's time to have another crack at this vessel and finally finally finally get out for some cruising. This week while trying to survive running on next to no sleep and having at times two screaming babies we're getting stuck into the jobs and really trying to complete this boat. Bringing this Amel Super Maramu (one of the greatest blue water cruisers built in the 90's and 00's) back to life after a huge accident with a container ship has been nothing short of a crazy roller coster. This we look into the cost of it all and figure out if we have made a good investment and all the numbers that go along with that . We are on the verge of completing this refit and we feel now is a good time to be as transparent as possible with the costs. I think you'll be slightly surprised with the numbers we lay down and we hope this content gives people thinking about taking on a task like this more clarity. There's no doubt that just working through the various systems has been destroyed and unmaintained over the 30 year life span of this vessel has allowed us to really get to know our boat inside and out. This knowledge more than anything is value in it's self moving forward with this vessel being our full time home. Finally after 18 months in the marina we are departing to get back into cruising life. Yes we've worked ourselves hard, sweated it out and lost a lot of sleep to not only the boat but our twin babies as well. This week we are kissing our problems good buy with the horizon as our destination.... waaaaait, hold everything. What is that noise coming from the engine... Yes life decides to throw us another curve ball, another kick in the gut just as we are super hyped to start our exploring again. Gravity brings us back down to earth in the most brutal of ways. This week we put our mast on, well kind of. We are hoisting the mast onto the boat to measure the stays for a short time before laying it back down again. This process is key to making sure all the stays are swagged at the perfect length. We also have a little adventure day, at Pangkor island, soaking up the sun and taking our twins on their very first swim. Living life with a home that consistency moves around the world has it's definite positives but when you are trying to give birth to two babies being around a good health care system and your family really helps. This week we have arrived back in Sweden to start to prepare for the birth of our twins that are due quite soon. Now the middle of winter in the northen hemisphere we venture out into Stockholm to see how a city exactly operates when the tempretures go down to -16C or 3.2F. We find a photo spot where we took a photo after meeting four years ago and decide to take another one and show you the contrast. We venture into Gamla stan or the old town of Sweden and give a quick history lesson into the city. Another week in the yard and another ground hog day hahaha. No I'm sure you've heard us say this before but we can't wait to get out of here and getting launched in the water (for a second time) is a huge step towards this. With the manager coming in on a Sunday to drop us in we hadn't seen him operate the cradle before and to be honest we were a bit nervous. Toilets jobs, leaking sailing boat and hot humid Malaysian heat, does it get any better I ask you!? Yes diving head first into a constant "head" (or toilet) issue we've been facing for a couple weeks its surprisingly not that fun... After launching some three weeks ago we noticed a leak coming from the rudder stock that had us scared until it went away quite quickly. But it's back and has put Kieran in a really negative mood. He reassess the choices we have made up until this point not really expecting that the refit would take this long to complete. After 12 months rebuilding our Perkins M80-t engine we're happy to say that most of it is being dropped in the vessel this week. When I say most of it the mechanic has found an issue with the head which requires further repair. On top of the fantastic engine job we also have a water leak and toilet issue that we're oh so happy to get in too :/ Join the crew https://www.patreon.com/SailingMerewether Our patrons are the ones that make this all possible and without them, we would not be where we are today. Ahh yes the endless jobs continue and this week we are finally getting around to sticking on the name of Merewether. Working through the jobs list does get harder and harder with the babies really slowing us down. But finding determination and. perseverance we keep going. Yes, after 18 months, newly born twin babies, and a whole lot of sweating and swearwords we have finally made it out onto the water under our own propulsion and MAN does it feel good. Finally having a running engine last week, this week we are eager to start testing it out to discover if there are any unwanted mistakes that the mechanic might have made while rebuilding the engine. Just this small outing really makes us excited for the future and we really are loving our home more and more. Happy to say that our 53 foot sailing vessel did not sink on her first night in the water after 12 months on land haha. The leak that first started as we hit the water seems to have stopped for now and with any luck it will not come back. The boats jobs are far from finished. This week Kieran goes about installing the winches and winch pads onto the mast so that the halyards can be tensioned. After so long on the hard the water tank has built up some green dirt inside it and Kieran also goes about trying to remove as much as he can before the family moves onto the boat. A very exciting day to finally pick up our brand new dingy which will hopefully take us on many exciting missions to come. This week we finalise everything that needs to be done before she goes in the water. The bow thruster is acting up so Kieran has to manually put in a pully system to get it in the up position. The dirty sump in the engine room gets a good scrub and the anchor chain gets lifted on to the boat again. Kieran?s mom is here to spend some time with our babies and she also sees Merewether II for the first time. She tells us what she thinks on ?Gilly cam" haha. With only a few days left now we can't tell you how excited we are to put her back into the water. Yes, finally after delay after delay the long awaited selden mast has been put up and boy does she look good! With stress levels high, the rigger, Kieran and several workers go about getting the mast in her final position to start carrying sails to go around the world. It's been a long road to this point with the process of ordering the right mast for our boat, getting it constructed, getting it delievered around the world from Sweden to Malaysia and finally put together to be ready for hoisting. To say we have been excited about this day is a gross understatement. Also the boat jobs continue with so many different aspects of this boat needing attention. Seven long months of waiting for our mast and it has finally arrived! Yes! to say we are excited is a. huge understatement. Finally we can see our semi destroyed sailboat looking more and more like the ocean traveling explorer she should. The mast has taken 2 months to move from Sweden where it was made to Malaysia. The company that made the mast is called Selden who are mass producer of masts around Europe and a very trusted name in the sailing world. Back into the groove and we're showing off what has and mostly hasn't been done while we've been away. We had quite a few jobs for contractors to do and its a let down going through the boat and finding things unfinished and needing work. But with every problem comes a solution and I know we're up to the task. Also we look into our future dinghy to understand if we want to go against the norm and buy a fiberglass dinghy. After a decent break from the hustle and bustle of youtube we're back! Sailing Merewether has returned with new energy and a new crew. We have spent the last six months in Sweden, three of which being extremely pregnant and three working out how to be brand new parents to twins. Our beautiful twins entered the world on the 13th of March and we've never been happier to be land based for so long. This week they are 10 weeks old and we're taking them out for their very first sail! Getting them used to crusing life is essential for our lifestyle to continue so we want to take our time and make the experience as painless and comfortable as possible. Come along as they experience hopfully the first of many nautical miles to come!
