Sailing Catamaran Escape Episode 73. Great Keppel Island - The Narrows. After an overnight passage from Hunter Island and arriving in the early hours of the morning at Great Keppel Island, we anchored at Resort Beach. Soon after it was time to take the island ferry to the mainland to get some supplies. We spent a few days at the island moving around to different anchorages to suit the weather conditions. We set off in light conditions, optimistically trailing fishing lines behind, Not long before we entered The Narrows we actually caught a fish. A nice Spotted Mackerel which was eaten soon after anchoring.

Setting sail from St. Bees Island our intention was to head for the Percy Islands but an uncertain weather forecast meant a change in plan. We anchored at Curlew Island part of the Guardfish Cluster group. Heavy fog saw us depart for the Duke Islands, anchoring at scenic Hunter Island. The following morning we set off again to round Cape Townshend, encountering whales along the way. Going through the night we got a bit of a fright, being buzzed by a helicopter, after straying into the Shoalwater Bay Military Zone before arriving at our destination, Great Keppel Island in the early hours.

It's been over 2 years since the last haul out, so "Escape" is well due for some maintenance. First on the list was replacing the broken window that was damaged in the storm as we left The Solomon Islands on our crossing of The Coral Sea ( see Episode 56). After sailing down the coast from Townsville we were booked into "Boatworks" at Coomera on the Gold Coast. Other jobs besides the windows was new antifoul, servicing the feathering props, replacing anchor shackle and reversing the chain.

After having arrived in The Whitsunday Islands, we leave Long Island to first head for Airlie Beach then sail to South Molle Island. South Molle was always known as one of the major resorts in the area geared for families. A swimming pool, golf course and beach activities, barbeques and a traditional seafood night on Friday was the norm. This all changed when Cyclone Debbie destroyed the island and most of the other resorts in 2017. We take a look at its present ghostlike state after having fond memories of visiting when it was a thriving tourist resort. Captain Eber Bunker of the whaling ship 'Albion' was the first European to discover the region and he gave his name to the Southern Group. These 22 islands and reefs lie about 40 miles off the Central Queensland coast. They are important for their breeding populations of seabirds, marine turtles and large populations of manta rays.

Having left Curlew Island we thread our way through the dozens of ship carriers anchored off the port of Mackay. Unable to get our engine oil leaks worked on immediately we decided to carry on cruising up the coast and maybe try somewhere else. We had brief stopovers at Brampton Island and Thomas Island before anchoring at Happy Bay on Long Island. A short walk around the island gave us a chance to have a brief look at Palm Bay Resort, not long though as they were closing the resort due to a wedding taking place. Later we found out that the resort had been used as a base for the film ' Ticket to Paradise' featuring George Clooney and Julia Roberts. Sailing Catamaran Escape - Cruising the Queensland Coast - Episode 64 After coming down from the hardstand at Boatworks in Coommera we take a work berth. We finish the window installation, change the LED in the tachometer to regain the hours. Another job we had put off for some time was sorting out the diesel bug in the fuel tanks.Lots of filter changes and even using our home made polishing system didn't fix the problem. Boatworks were very helpful in providing large empty tanks to flush out all the contaminated fuel before treating with ' Fuel Doctor' and fresh diesel. We then had a few days break on The Broadwater. When we wanted to continue our trip and head north one of the motors had no propulsion. We had to motor to Manly Marina in Brisbane and take the Cone Clutch out and upgrade it. Hopefully after this we hope this is an end to the major boat jobs for some time, so we can enjoy cruising up the coast!

In this episode we sail from Shaw Island in The Whitsundays to The Keppel Islands. It was a distance of 212 miles and we had strong northerly winds towards the end of the passage. The entrance to Keppel Bay Marina was very hard to identify as the rocks on the breakwater seem to blend in and look like one solid wall. It was a good uneventful passage, with no break downs..
