We're building this shed ourselves-just me, my wife, and my dad-with no prior construction experience. And this week, the pressure's on. The rain keeps coming, and without a roof, the floor we worked so hard to build is getting soaked again and again. We need to get this roof on-but since we're learning as we go, everything takes longer than it should. In this episode, we face the reality of slow progress, constant weather delays, and the very real possibility that we won't get the roof on in time to protect the shed. But in the middle of all that, we're also learning to slow down for what matters most-like taking a full day off to spend time with our daughter. This is Part 3 of our DIY Shed Build-the first structure we're building on our raw land in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. It's the first big step toward turning this forested hillside into a long-term home for our family. This week, we tried to raise the first wall of our shed? and it didn't go so well. It was a scary moment-heavy wall, bad leverage, and our dog Oso just inches from being in the wrong place at the wrong time. We thought we were ready. We weren't. But like everything else in this project, we're learning as we go. In this episode, we take you through the process of framing and raising our first walls-what went wrong, how we recovered, and what the experience taught us about building smarter, not faster. We're documenting every step of our DIY homestead journey as we turn a raw piece of land in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina into our family's forever home. In this first episode of our shed build series, we scrape together a gravel foundation, frame the floor, and try to keep everything square and level while figuring it out as we go. This shed might seem like a small project, but to us, it's the first step toward learning how to build our dream home on this property in the mountains of North Carolina. Whether you're planning your own backyard workshop or just love watching people learn through trial and error, welcome to the start of something big. ???? This week: - We scramble to meet a surprise gravel delivery with 15 minutes' notice -We level our first-ever "foundation" using hand tools and guesswork -The lumber delivery goes sideways-and we have to unload it all ourselves -Isabella returns home just in time to watch the chaos unfold -We frame and square the floor using nothing but basic tools and a lot of trial and error -Advantech subfloor goes down, and the shed finally starts to feel real New to the channel? It was everything we were looking for: a large lot with plenty of buildable land in a beautiful area. But just a few days after submitting our offer, we were devastated to find out it was rejected. The owners decided to accept another offer that came in the same day as ours. So, we went back to the drawing board and in our eagerness to get started, we ended up purchasing this half-acre lot. It's in a great location with a stunning view-but it's far from perfect. The lot is much smaller than we'd hoped for, the driveway and front yard are incredibly steep, and after consulting with a structural engineer and an excavator, we realized that the particulars of our build site would make it quite expensive to build our dream home here. But for the past couple months I've kept a close eye on the land market in this area. And recently, several promising properties have popped up on our radar. So this week, we're going to check out those properties-and apply everything we've learned so far about site prep and excavation to see if we should just commit to building on our land, or if one of these properties might be a better option for our dream mountain homestead. After years at sea, we've set foot on a new adventure: turning two and a half acres of wild North Carolina land into a home of our own. But before we can raise walls and shape a future, it all starts with something simple: a rough, imperfect table built with our own hands. In this episode, we visit a lumber yard for the very first time, tackle a giant brush pile from clearing our septic site, and start piecing together the basic tools we'll need for the long journey ahead. The cuts aren't perfect. The learning curve is steep. But this small act of creation marks the beginning of something far bigger than a table-it's the first real step toward crafting the life we've been dreaming of. New to the channel? So we are in the process of purchasing land so we can build our own DIY mountain homestead. Two weeks ago we put in an offer on this two and a half acre piece of land near the smoky mountains in North Carolina. We've got a couple of weeks before we close on this property, so we're now doing our due diligence, which basically means doing all the research to make sure that buying this property really is a good idea. Now even though we don't own the land yet, we did get a chance to get our hands dirty this week. It felt so amazing to finally be breaking ground, working with our hands and make progress on our homestead out in these beautiful mountains. It was everything we've been wanting. But then we got some bad news that changed everything. Away from the craziness of civilization, where we can build our own home, work the earth with our own hands, and carve out our own little slice of heaven. Basically we want to build a mountain homestead and recently, in the mountains of North Carolina, we found the perfect piece of land. Or is it? Honestly we have no idea what we're doing so we could be wrong but I mean I think its pretty good?. So this week I'm going to tour every square inch of this two and a half acres on the edge of the Smoky Mountains to see if this land could become our dream homestead, or if we might want to steer clear. It's the very beginning of a new chapter in our lives but it's not long after beginning to clear land on the property that Jordan gets really sick. And this week we finally reveal where in this beautiful part of the country, we're going to call home. But that's only the beginning because we've still got to find and buy our dream property. And with Desiree's due date right around the corner, we need to act fast. So this week we tour a bunch of potential properties and we find one in particular that we really fall in love with. We are on a road trip to find a mountain homestead where we can build our own home, a massive workshop, a guest house for our folks, and maybe even a couple airbnbs. But the tricky part is that we're taking on this project without a whole lotta money. And so the last stop on our road trip is a region that's been through some pretty serious economic hardship. West Virginia often ranks as one of the poorest states in the U.S. But it's also one of the most beautiful, with tons of stunning nature, large swaths of undeveloped land, and world class adventure activities. Not to mention one of the best songs of all time. And several towns in the state are now transforming from run down coal towns to thriving tourism hubs. So this week we're visiting Fayetteville WV and the New River Gorge National Park to decide if this playground for adventure seekers could be a good investment and if this is where we want to raise our family. But we are running out of time because I'm due with our second daughter Scarlett in just a few weeks. So we need to find our new home and fast. We're looking for a large piece of land where we can build our home, a large workshop, and a bunch of airbnb cabins. We've chosen Bryson City NC as the region for our new home but finding a suitable property has turned out to be much harder than we thought because the vast majority of land out here is way too steep to build on. But after months of searching we finally found the perfect property. So far we've been looking at large properties with fixer upper houses on them. Many of these houses have been in such rough shape that we're starting to consider buying raw land and building from scratch. But really nice land that's not totally in the middle of nowhere costs a fair amount of money. So we're wondering how much we should spend on this property and how we're going to finance the entire endeavor. Our story this week also takes a dramatic turn when a local bull rider bets me this awesome cowboy hat that I can't rope a bull on my first try at the local rodeo. And let's just say I took the challenge very seriously.
