The final dream was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started building a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finishing the house we found a boat that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her. We sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean). Then we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. Right now the dream is happening and we are building a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life with our son Oli. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. This week, we tackle one of the most important projects on our aluminum sailboat: building the bow sprit, anchor roller system, and windlass foundation. By the end of the episode, the bow of the boat looks completely different—and for the first time, it really starts to look like a serious offshore cruising yacht. Thanks for watching and being part of this crazy adventure. Installing the deck hatches on our aluminum expedition sailboat turned out to be WAY more complicated than we expected. This was one of those projects that kept us awake at night for months… We knew that as soon as we started welding large hatch frames into the deck, there was a real risk of warping the entire structure again. And after all the distortion problems we already had with the deck during construction, we absolutely could not afford to get this wrong. Huge thanks to Peter for the incredible welding work and to Chris from @The_Ghostship for the valuable tips that helped us keep the deck flat. The dream is slowly becoming real. __________________________________________________ Support our project: ► http://www.patreon.com/oddlifecrafting (Get instant access to extra content) ► donating through PayPal using: oddlifecrafting@gmail.com ___________________________________________________ We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. But before installing it, we had to face a problem: it simply didn’t fit the boat as designed. But making it work means redesigning everything: layout, ergonomics, visibility, and even how we’ll navigate the boat day-to-day. Is simpler actually better? And how far would you go to get it right? Let me know what you think. __________________________________________________ We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. Because these windows sit close to the bow where waves can hit hard, we didn’t want to rely only on glue like most production boats. Instead, we designed a heavy-duty aluminum frame system that combines structural adhesive with a mechanical backup ring for extra safety. In this episode we machine the frames, explain the engineering behind the design, and show how our partners at Robland ( @Robland ) are helping us turn this idea into reality. When you're building a sailboat in 2026, choosing how the boat will move is not as simple as it used to be. There are more options than ever before — diesel, fully electric, parallel hybrid, series hybrid — and every choice comes with compromises. In this episode we walk you through our thinking process, the challenges we faced while trying to source an engine, and the reasons behind the direction we decided to take for this boat. __________________________________ We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. This episode was an important one for us. For the first time, the boat truly started to feel like ours. We removed the old markings from the hull and installed a new aluminum plate and gave "another life" to our boat. Step by step the structure is getting closer to completion… and closer to the water. Why? Because we want to live 100% off-grid. In this video, we tackle one of the most stressful parts of the build: the aluminum roof. From engineering a custom trim to collect every drop of rainwater to creating enough surface area for over 3,000W of solar power, we’re pushing the limits of what a monohull can do. __________________________ We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. This episode is an emotional roller coaster. After moving forward, it feels like we're taking two steps back. Unfortunately, we found that 80% of our work now involves fixing severe structural and leveling problems from the initial welding on the aluminum deck of our boat. We face a huge challenge in aligning the forward deck, which is completely out of line and uneven. You'll see the frustration, but also the clever solution we found with Peter to shrink the stringer and bring the deck back to the correct position, using heat and tension! In addition to dealing with the structural problems, we had to make a crucial final decision: Design Change: We simplified the original plan and moved the chain locker to the bow, for safety and usability reasons. Final Layout Decision: It's time for the cuts of no return! We marked and cut the new hatches and portlights. This is what defines the boat's interior layout (Ollie's berth, head, etc.)—a moment of high tension. ⚠️ ATTENTION: The deck problem was bigger than expected! To avoid having a very long video, we divided the solution into two parts. Part 2 IS ALREADY LIVE! Welcome to Part 2 of our structural nightmare! 🚢 After days of attempts, we finally found the definitive solution for the uneven and crooked deck. In this episode, the welder and I take a deep dive into the correction, using relief cuts and an ingenious aluminum "shrinking" technique to relieve the plate's tension and force it into the correct position. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
