We sold our house in Cape Town, South Africa to buy a boat to travel and experience more of this beautiful world with our little family. In this episode we finally set sail from Gibraltar, the starting point of our trip to embark on an adventure of a lifetime. We sail along Spain's Costa del Sol (Sun Coast) towards the Balearic Islands of Formentera, Ibiza and Mallorca. It's not all fun and games as our main sail rips and need to repair it urgently! Our first port of call on our journey was Gibraltar. A British overseas territory on the tip of the Iberian peninsula below Spain where the Great Rock of Gibraltar meets the sea. We moored our boat at Queensway marina very close to the center of town which was a convenient place for us to be to provision our boat. There were a few important modifications that we felt we wanted to do to the boat before we embarked on our journey. The first thing was to enclose the guard rails around the boat with netting to create a safer environment on the boat for the kids to play and live. The other two major improvements were installing solar panels, which required building a custom stainless steel arch off the back of the boat. And a water marker to convert sea water into fresh drinking and shower water. This process took a couple of weeks which allowed us ample opportunity to explore Gibraltar. We found Gibraltar particularly kiddy friendly with some fantastic places to entertain the kids. These were our top 5 places in Gibraltar with kids 1) Cable Car - The kids absolutely loved going up the cable car and visiting the local residents at the top, the Barbary Macaques. From the top you get a 360 view of Gibraltar. It was such a thrill to see our little boat and home parked down below in the Queensway Marina. 2) Number 2 was St Michael's Cave - with its incredibly stalagmites hanging from the ceiling and immersive light and sound installation expressing layers upon layers of history fused with the Rock. 3) Number 3 was Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park - home to both exotic and native animals many of which were confiscated from illegal traders passing through Gibraltar. 4) The beaches of Gibraltar with is lovely long stretches of golden sand and gentle lapping waters perfect for the kids to swim in. 5) And number 5 the Playgrounds, playgrounds Galore all over the town .Our favourite was the one nestled among the beautiful leafy green trees of the Alameda Botanical Gardens. With the solar and water maker finally fitted, and on the boat provisioned with the new sheets, towels and duvets, all the essentials we felt we need, the boat was really starting to feel like home and were nearly ready to set off. We had one last element to complete the water maker installation and that was to drill a through hull hole order to draw the water up from the sea into the water maker. In order to do this we need to take the boat the Algeciras to crane the boat out. This would be our first attempt at sailing the boat out of the Marina. Things didn't exactly get off to a smooth start. The with propellers now cleared we were able to set off across the bay to Algeciras. It was absolutely incredible watching the boat being pulled out of the water. We spend the night on the boat on the hard which I must say was an extremely strange sensation, climbing up to the boat on a later balancing on its hulls on the ground and wedged into place. With the installation complete we were finally ready to set off on our adventure up the coast of Spain!
