Well the prevailing afternoon seabreeze means I have to tack back out of Somes Sound. Also, I have to wait until 14:30 hours for the current to turn fair at the entrance. This means that I don't make Bar Harbor until early evening. And the wind continues to play hide-and-seek with me, finally obliging me to drop anchor in Hull Bay for the night. I leave the St. George River for Rockland and for a necessary re-provision. Though first I stop at the lovely island anchorage by Dix Island. After Rockland it is on to Pulpit Harbor, a frequent stop for the Camden schooner fleet. While preparing to negotiate the somewhat narrow entrance under sail, I am schooled in the procedure by a great schooner that sails in before me-- I mean, actually sails in. After reprovisioning in Brunswick, I begin my downeast meander with a short trip to the Basin, on the New Meadows river. However, conditions are less than ideal to attempt the narrow cut by sail and oar, and I chicken out. The following morning brings near calm conditions and a flooding current. I'm back in familiar New England waters. Following a provisioning run, I set off for a short sail from Vineyard Haven to Tarpaulin Cove. The sailing weather is near perfect, although there are thunderstorms in the forecast. Well those thunderstorms arrive sooner than expected in the form of a gust front that ushers in gale conditions lasting nearly one hour. Caught off guard I am scrambling, especially as the lovely Martha's Vineyard has suddenly become a dangerous lee shore. Entering and exiting constricted waterways by sail and oar can certainly be challenging at times. But then an already small anchorage can get even smaller when other boats decide to anchor there as well. At times I feel like a nautical Houdini (Nau-dini? It's the best I could come up with ...) trying to pilot my eight-ton, engineless craft out of some of our present-day yacht harbors. I'm in the thick of it now. But I do manage to complete the assembly of the Furlex roller furling system for the new staysail. I also plan to replace my Force 10 stove with a Dickinson Caribbean stove, so I am taking the opportunity to refurbish some of the surrounding furniture. Yep, it's another installment of "hard work on the hard". First up: topsides need re-painting. This is complicated by the fact that Interlux has discontinued Perfection Paint, which I liked a lot. So the normally challenging Broad Creek (Deltaville, VA) -- for an engineless sailboat that is -- is rendered even trickier by dredging operations. A fair wind is a must for sailing in and out of Broad Creek. The final step for me is to get the boat to the travel lift slip at Jolly Skipper Boatyard. Luckily morning brings a flat calm and I am able to scull up to the lift slip, though not without running aground first ...
