IN THIS VIDEO: After a memorable stay in Les Saintes, we set sail back to Pointe-à-Pitre for what turns out to be a surprisingly decent sail. Our final evening at anchor, right in front of the striking ACTe Museum, offers a scenic and meaningful close to our time with family aboard. As the sun rises, Ann takes them ashore for their shuttle to the airport, while Dennis dives into the never-ending list of small boat projects that always seem to pile up. With the boat suddenly quieter, we shift gears into reset mode-laundry, provisioning, and a deep clean to prepare for our next passage. The calm after the goodbye brings a different kind of momentum: one of preparation and anticipation. Once we weigh anchor, our last task is to swing by the fuel dock before pointing the bow toward Sint Maarten. That's where our friends and crew, Robin and Karl, will join us for the longer bluewater legs-Bermuda, the Azores, and eventually Europe. But of course, nothing ever goes entirely to plan. A miscommunication between us while leaving the fuel dock, combined with a brisk wind, ends in a tense moment-and yet more cosmetic damage to the side of our floating home. It's a gut punch when the damage is self-inflicted, and a reminder that this life afloat comes with its fair share of humbling lessons. CURRENT LOCATION: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV-GTFO/ ABOUT OUR CATAMARAN: We love our new Balance 482 - it's a perfect size for a cruising couple to handle and is a great "balance" of performance and comfort. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. IN THIS VIDEO: In this episode, we prep the boat for a special weeklong visit from Ann's family-her mom, sister, and two kids fly in from Atlanta to join us in beautiful Guadeloupe. We kick things off in Pointe-à-Pitre, diving into local culture with fresh-caught fish from the market and a powerful visit to the Memorial ACTe museum, which tells the story of Guadeloupe's complex and resilient history. From there, we set sail for Les Saintes, braving a "sporty" passage that left most of the crew a little green. But the reward? Crystal-clear waters off Îlet Cabrit, perfect for snorkeling adventures with the kids. After exploring the reef, we shift over to Terre-de-Haut, mooring near Pain de Sucre for more underwater fun and a bite of the local favorite-bokits (you have to try these!). Then it's back to Les Saintes for an on-foot island exploration, climbing to the ruins of Fort Josephine and capping the day with a lively beach BBQ-complete with burgers, hermit crabs, and a few curious island cats. We wrap up the trip with a final dinghy ride to Fort Napoleon, where history and sweeping views collide, before heading back to Pointe-à-Pitre to say our bittersweet goodbyes. A week full of family, fun, sailing, and connection-we're grateful for every salty second. GTFOplan #113: Sailing to Dominica | Daggerboard Tips, Customs, Island Tour! #Dominica #daggerboards
IN THIS VIDEO: Join us aboard our Balance catamaran GoTFO?? as we sail to Dominica and overtake other boats with style ?. In this episode, we explain how to use daggerboards for optimal performance-raise the daggerboard to the sky with the blue line, and send it to hell with the red line! ?? As we pass Dominica's mountainous terrain, we go from 20+ knots of wind to a total wind shadow-classic island effect! We show how to adjust daggerboards in these shifting conditions to maintain speed and control. ? We grab a mooring ball in Roseau, and Ann navigates solo by dinghy to check us into Dominica customs-with a little help from a local legend named Ken. Meanwhile, Dennis and Schatzi explore ashore and meet fellow YouTubers: ? Green Room Pythons? D?v Kaufman Eats the World ?? Then we tour Dominica with THE Rick James-no, not that Rick James (but yes, that riff of "Super Freak" makes an appearance ?). Our incredible highlights: - Real vanilla extract from a roadside stand - Dominica's upcoming aerial tramway - Twin Trafalgar Waterfalls ? - Sulfur springs & hot springs - Freshwater Lake and hydroelectric pipes - Hummingbirds, bamboo homes, sausage trees & a parrot sanctuary - Titou Gorge - where Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was filmed ???? - And much more? ? After releasing our mooring, we sail 20 miles north to Portsmouth, Dominica, reefing along the way-Ann explains our easy zip tie reefing system. Once there, we enjoy:? Lobster at Waterfront Reggae Spot (call ahead!)? Steak dinner (compliments of the Captain!)? Party on the bow under the stars Next stop: Guadeloupe! IN THIS VIDEO: In keeping with our preference for shorter daytime sails, a quick five-hour hop from Saint Lucia brought us back to the lush shores of Martinique. Our first stop: Anse Dufour-a charming little anchorage known for its calm waters and decent snorkeling. Though picturesque, it was a brief visit, with limited exploration beyond the reef. After just one night, we continued northward to the historic town of Saint Pierre. Once the cultural heart and capital of Martinique, Saint Pierre was tragically reduced to ashes over a century ago when Mount Pelée erupted in 1902. Walking through its rebuilt streets, it's humbling to reflect on the town's history and resilience.Meanwhile, life aboard carried on. Ann continues to amaze with her sewing talents, seamlessly patching a cushion that mysteriously developed a tear. Dennis took on a handful of minor maintenance jobs as we steadily make our way toward Guadeloupe to rendezvous with family, and then onward to Sint Maarten for some needed repairs before our Atlantic crossing to Europe. On the technical front, our hull is protected with CopperCoat, a durable ablative epoxy that does a fantastic job of keeping marine growth at bay. Not only does it help us maintain speed by keeping the hull smooth and streamlined, but it also guards against potential damage from barnacles and other sea life. One of its biggest perks? With proper upkeep, it can last up to ten years-far outpacing traditional bottom paint. To our relief, this round of bottom cleaning was straightforward: a plastic scraper and a green scrubbie did the trick. However, not all maintenance news was good. While inspecting the underside, we discovered damage to our port daggerboard. Our best guess is that it occurred back in Ilet Pigeon, Guadeloupe, where a local fisherman's trap may have been set too close to our boat and got snagged. A frustrating find, but part of the ongoing rhythm of life at sea. Sailing, Salty Repairs & Innuendo: A Week Aboard SV GoTFO?? We rely heavily on AIS (Automatic Identification System) to safely navigate and identify nearby vessels. AIS provides real-time data-like speed, heading, and closest point of approach. In daylight, we might pass a little closer, but at night we maintain a strict 1-mile buffer, especially around RAMs (Restricted in Ability to Maneuver) like tankers and cargo ships. There's always a sigh of relief when we drop anchor or grab a mooring ball-but that's when the real work begins. Boat life isn't all palm trees and sunsets-there's always a list of projects waiting, and this week was no exception. Ann repairs Schatzi's "front yard," where salt and wind tore up the artificial turf. We also take a close look at how our Balance 482 catamaran performs in light wind: better than half of wind speed, especially near a beam reach. (Of course, performance depends on sail selection, sea state, and current.) We discover a mysterious gouge in our outboard-(dinghy dock suspect?)-and Dennis drops Ann off in Soufrière, St. Lucia for a walk with Schatzi, where she stumbles upon live stadium music. On the dinghy ride back, we zip past fellow Balance 482 sailors, SV Windependence. Shocked by island tour prices, we skip the excursions and splurge on fresh lobster from the boat boys instead-no regrets! ? Plus, Ann hunts down the elusive St. Lucia lettuce (victory!) and demos how to bind marine vinyl rugs using a Sailrite hot knife and binding tape, with tips for choosing darker colors to hide dirt. Dennis shows how we upgraded our Spectra watermaker pump system-doubling our water output by running both pumps! And there's a classic Ann moment on the Hobie Pedal Board (someone forgot the rudder...), with Dennis swooping in for the rescue. ? Hero status: confirmed. Oh, and Dennis gets way too excited demonstrating how to lube hatch gaskets-yes, innuendo included. ? We also upgrade our seagull striker padding (goodbye yoga mat, hello pool noodles with center holes!). Finally, we meet three awesome kids kayaking by and hand out apples and YouTube stickers-spreading good vibes, one nautical mile at a time. ?? Thanks for sailing with us! IN THIS VIDEO: Can you believe another boat hit us while GoTFO?? was at anchor in broad daylight? After a quick sail from Fort-de-France, Martinique, we found ourselves anchored in the stunning Rodney Bay, Saint Lucia. Our friends Ted and Mia on SV *Serengeti* had left just ahead of us, and we gave it our best shot to catch up. We nearly closed the gap, but their head start was just a bit too much-next time, *Serengeti*! Rodney Bay is every bit the Caribbean dream, with its white sand beaches, turquoise water, and palm-lined resorts. Once anchored, we headed ashore to clear customs and immigration, and then explored the area. It's definitely got a touristy vibe, but there's also a strong boating presence with chandleries and marine shops that make life easier for cruisers like us. During one of our dinghy runs to shore, we spotted two young French women struggling to row after their outboard gave up. Dennis tossed them a line and towed them in-our second dinghy rescue of the week! Good karma, right? Oh-and yes, we got hit by another boat? again! Thankfully, no harm done this time. A 15-foot Hobie Cat, rented by a vacationing couple, accidentally bumped into us. Luckily, their soft bow made it more of a gentle nudge than a true collision. Still-twice in one week? We made sure to stick around for Rodney Bay's legendary Friday night "Jump Street" party, a 50-year-old tradition full of music, food, and high-energy fun. The next morning, we prepped the boat, weighed anchor, and pointed the bow toward Soufrière-home of the iconic Pitons and more adventures ahead. IN THIS VIDEO: We left Woburn Bay-also known as Clarkes Court, Grenada? or as some cruisers like to call it, "Warranty Bay" or "Claims Court." From there, we set off on an overnight passage to Fort-de-France, Martinique, hoping to arrive in time for their epic annual Carnival celebration. We made it! And we were stoked to be joined by our friends Mia and Ted from SV Serengeti-friends we first met over a year ago in Hout Bay while we were deep in boat prep mode. Once anchored, we ran into a familiar issue: that annoying grinding sound when the metal thimble on the bridle rubs against the metal bracket on the boat. It kept us up at night. Dennis came up with the idea to add some padding, and Ann grabbed some leftover webbing from an old project, stitched on some Velcro, and Dennis installed it on the bridle eye. A few nights later-total silence. Problem solved. Ann also took care of a tear in one of our cockpit cushions, showing off her sewing skills once again. The rest of our time in Martinique was a much-needed break. We soaked in the local Carnival scene for three straight days-vibrant costumes, nonstop parades, and an electric atmosphere that felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Fort-de-France is the capital of Martinique, a former French colony that became a French overseas department back in 1946. After an unforgettable few days, we started prepping for our next sail-heading south to Saint Lucia. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. IN THIS VIDEO: We didn't want to wait for Balance to install our new freezer-so we did it ourselves! ? But hindsight is 20/20? we really should've flipped the fan direction when we had the old freezer out. It would've been so easy! This week is full of boat life randomness in the best way: ?? Hidden treasure in the sliding door? Dennis finds a taco seasoning packet-guess what's for dinner?! ? Ann shows why grooming Schatzi in minimal clothing is the way to go (hello, ocean rinse!) ?? Dennis joins the grooming party with some spontaneous manscaping ? We explore the other side of Grenada with Schatzi-and get creative to keep her cool ? Ann shares a surprisingly delicious healthy snack: baked onions with parmesan-YUM. ? Learn how to make a Flemish eye with a zip tie for sheet ends that pass through a clutch ? Concerned viewers flagged potential stray current-Ann checks with a multimeter and finds no current. Let us know if you think more testing is needed! Plus, a sweet night out with friends Vean & Jessica. Life afloat keeps us guessing, learning, and laughing. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). IN THIS VIDEO: After a rough passage to Grenada that caused Ann to get sick, we take care of more boat projects while we wait for warranty work. We find hidden treasures behind the sliding door, and Dennis is electrician extraordinaire and hard wires LED lights in the salon so we can always find our boat at night. Party on GoTFO??! Ann makes an innuendo asking if the Roku is really our primary source of entertainment. As we explore Grenada, Dennis offers water to a wandering dog - so sweet! Ann catches a taxi to customs with James, another captain getting work done in Grenada. She meets the daughter of the woman who will receive Ann's old sewing machine - so heart-warming and reminder that this journey is really about the people you meet and making a positive impact. Learn how to distinguish a legitimate taxi from a fake. Ann is temporarily stranded on the dock after retuning from customs. After trying to hail Dennis on the VHF, she does her Hokie WOOT to get his attention and then he comes to her rescue with the dinghy. Phew! Ann and Dennis explore Hog Island with Schatzi, enjoying the shady path which enables Schatzi to do a longer walk in the heat. However she flags and has to be carried for the remainder of the walk. We explore another part of Grenada and then enjoy a wonderful dinner with fellow Balance owners, Vean and Jessica. Next up, it's grooming time, not just for Schatzi but Dennis as well. Later that night, we enjoy the Sunday night Roger's beach party on Hog Island. Then for welding, we have to dock GoTFO?? in 20 knot gusts along a cement pier. Dennis does an amazing job at the helm so we dock and un-dock with zero damage to GoTFO??. IN THIS VIDEO: Back in Sint Maarten, we're thrown into a whirlwind of unexpected challenges. After Ann had to travel home for family matters, Dennis gets boarded by the local coast guard and police for a routine inspection. What should've been a simple process quickly became nerve-wracking when conflicting rules from the immigration office and police left him in a tough spot. Thankfully, it all worked out with just a warning, but it was definitely an experience to remember! Upon Ann's return, we prepare for a tough 2-day passage to Grenada for some follow-up warranty work. Unfortunately, the weather was anything but predictable, with wind speeds and gusts much higher than forecasted. The wind angles were all wrong, making the trip feel more like an upwind battle, with the boat bouncing around like a washing machine. Fortunately, we had a conservative sail plan in place, which helped us manage the rough conditions. Watch as we navigate through unexpected hurdles both on land and at sea, all while keeping our cool and staying focused on the journey ahead. IN THIS VIDEO: We sail to Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, making a game out of our lazy sailing-can we hoist the mainsail without it snagging in the lazy jacks? But our fun quickly turns into panic when we realize we've made a critical anchoring mistake-we're too close to the channel. Suddenly, a massive cruise ship is bearing down on GoTFO?, narrowly missing us! That heart-pounding moment teaches us a valuable lesson, and we quickly relocate to a mooring ball across the bay. With the boat now safely secured, Dennis tackles the annual winch service, and we believe we're the first to document how to service Lewmar size 46 and 50 winches. As he works, Dennis casually mentions a long shaft, and Ann-never one to let an opportunity slip-fires back with an innuendo, setting off a chain reaction of playful jokes. Once the winch is reassembled, something doesn't sound quite right, so Dennis dives into troubleshooting while Ann gets creative. She repurposes our dinghy pole into a dive flag, swapping out the broken all-around white dinghy light for the Alpha flag-the international symbol for divers in the water. Naturally, the dinghy pole also becomes prime material for more jokes. We then set sail for Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe, flying across the water at nearly 9 knots-almost half the wind speed. After anchoring, we take Schatzi for a stroll through town, soaking in the French charm, complete with a cordonnerie (shoemaker) and picturesque streets. The ferry shuttles back and forth, but at one point, we witness something we've never seen before-it actually picks up a ginormous mooring ball! Meanwhile, several wing foilers carve effortlessly across the waves, fueling our dreams of learning the sport in the future. Supplies to service your Harken winches: -High-performance winch Oil by Lewmar -Harken Winch Grease -Isopropyl Alcohol, Mineral Spirits, Diesel or Gasoline -Toothbrush or similar brush to apply winch grease -Allen Key metric set -Flat head screw driver CURRENT LOCATION: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV-GTFO/ ABOUT OUR CATAMARAN: We love our new Balance 482 - it's a perfect size for a cruising couple to handle and is a great "balance" of performance and comfort. Custom-Fitted Sheets for Our Balance 482 Catamaran - No More Bunched-Up Bedding! After 16 months of struggling with bunched-up sheets, Ann is finally making a custom-fitted sheet for the forward cabins of our Balance 482 Catamaran! The process is simple and requires only a few supplies. Supplies: ?? Gutermann Sew-All Thread ? https://a.co/d/ayM7Se5?? Elastic ? https://a.co/d/52pDSMN?? Elastic threader tool ? https://a.co/d/dDXnx1c?? King-size fitted or flat sheet ? https://a.co/d/d0ZMm3X Steps: 1. Choose a sheet larger than your mattress. 2. If using a fitted sheet, cut off the elastic edge. 3. Determine how much fabric to remove for a snug fit. 4. Cut one corner open to lay the sheet flat. 5. Mark the upper corner with a safety pin for reference. 6. Trim up to 75" (190.5 cm) from the side of the sheet. 7. Open the opposite corner seam to lay it flat. 8. Create a right corner for the other top side. 9. Check the fit of the top corners. 10. Trim any excess fabric from the sides. 11. Shape and sew both bottom corners. 12. Sew a pocket along the bottom edge for the elastic. 13. Feed the elastic through the pocket. 14. Secure the elastic ends with a double square knot. 15. Add an elastic strap to the bottom where the mattress tapers for extra security. ? Now, the custom-fitted sheet is ready for a perfect fit! No more bunching, slipping, or struggling! ?
