THE FALKEN SAGAS: An Epic Adventure with 59º North Sailing Along The Viking Route: Newfoundland to Greenland to Iceland.

Welcome to the Trailer of The Falken Sagas series. I left Triteia in her southern hemisphere’s winter berth in Whangarei, New Zealand and flew back to North America to meet up with Andy Schell and 59º North Sailing. Andy had invited me to join him on a high latitude adventure onboard their Farr 65, Falken, to sail the Viking Route from Newfoundland to Greenland, transit Prince Christian Sound and sail on to the West Fjords of Iceland across the North Atlantic. Along for this adventure was Andy’s First Mate Vilma and the crew of the Falken; Jim, Matt, Richa, Johnathan, Charlotte, Gavin, Alejandro & Nick.

I have made several long format films and video episodes documenting our journey and adventures. Starting with preparations in Newfoundland then our passage to Greenland, our time cruising in Southern Greenland and our passage to Iceland. All of the drone footage you see in the films was shot by Andy Schell, otherwise all the footage was filmed by myself on a GoPro.

In Noank, Connecticut, we find a bluewater sailboat for sale. She's a New Zealand-made Alan Warwick design Cardinal 42 sailboat built for racing and circumnavigation. The current owner loves to single-hand her and has made some very clever alterations.... including a tweak to the Monitor steering system as well as an innovative solution to seal a tired teak deck.

Here's the best part.... WE WENT SAILING ON HER!!! It was an amazing spring day and we got some much-needed vitamin D.

The first job on our new build yacht project and were doing it with an iPhone 15 Pro!

The plan is to use the phone to scan a very unique keel for this aluminium lift keel yacht!

With only two other boats like ours in the world, we tracked one down to Scotland and had 1hr to scan her keel in order to make our own mould. The pressure was on as this was a one hit wonder…

We share our findings using 3D scanning app Polycam, show the differences we found between LiDAR and Photogrammetry along with a helpful tip we got from the pros.

Tasmania is bigger than many people think - by far larger than any Mediterranean island - and a challenge for sailors. Situated in the Roaring Forties, with large swells on the west coast, caution is advised. I start in Launceston, sail along the north coast, encounter penguins and flocks of birds near Stanley. Then I head west in search of jungle and traces of the first settlers at Macquarie Harbour. An expedition that also involves dodging storms and crossing the jungle.

Brandon deviates from our normal vlog videos to talk about the poop shooter. There is so much disunity these days that we all need to reunify our minds and hearts around the one profoundly central idea: we all poop...and we all stink! The #rvblackwatertank can be intimidating to the new RVer. Heck, it even took us 3 RV's and some time on the road to get things regular and slipping through with a nice consistency each time. It's all about the right #rvblacktank treatment and few best practices to keep things sliding through. Following the launch of their 50 footer in 2021, Windelo launched their second model, the Windelo 54, which further develops the innovations of the smaller catamaran..

Yacht Designers Christophe Barreau and Fréderic Neuman have over a meter more to play with in this bigger multihull. Half of this is in the nacelle, which has given them the freedom to increase the comfort and 40cm is in the bow.

There is more performance, more options on configurations and higher comfort levels, all with the eco design and modest carbon footprint of her smaller sister. We enjoyed an extensive test sail on Zig Zag. Thanks to the Windelo Catamarans team.

Almost nobody knows Dominica. That makes this caribbean island an "insider tip". Half of Dominica is supposed to be rainforest, jungle. There are active volcanoes. Steep mountains. And a trail. You can walk the entire island yourself. This is my outdoor project: I will bushwalk Dominica's jungle.
First I buy a hammock. I want to sleep outside. Then I do test hikes. And finally I set off in the south of the country.
I come along Freshwater Lake, Desolation Valley, Boiling Lake, Scotts Head, Middleham Falls, Emerald Pools. There is farmland with bananas, mangos, coconuts. And jungle without end.

If you have spent time near southeast Florida, you know about the intense Northerlies that come through during the winter months. You have also heard that you don't want to be in the Gulf Stream during them; the Gulf Stream flows south to north, which, in presence of a northerly wind, results in nasty sea conditions. This was definitely a risky sail and I got to put myself and the boat to the test.
