The biennial Rolex Fastnet Race is one of sailing’s ultimate challenges. Over the 605 nautical mile course, crews face a severe test of their endurance and sailing prowess as they race across the English Channel and Celtic Sea, before turning at the mythical Fastnet Rock and heading back eastwards to the finish line in Plymouth. What is 83-year-old Ok-sun Hyun doing jumping into the ocean with a leaded belt and a sharpened knife? Just what she’s been doing for the past 65 years: collecting abalone, sea urchin and octopus to feed the villagers on the small island of Jeju in South Korea. It is primitive, painful and lonely work, and she is one of a dying breed. In Last Mermaids, follow the journey of Korean American Kimi Kim as she leaves her hometown New York to find her roots on Jeju Island. With Ok-sun as her mentor, she learns the ancient craft of diving for sustenance and finds peace beneath the surface in the mermaid’s garden.
