Just you and your muscle fibers. This is a race against the tide, the current, the clock—and maybe that voice in your head that asks what on earth you're doing out here. Whether you’re racing to win or for some other reason, SEVENTY48 doesn’t care how you do it—as long as it’s 100% human-powered. Kayaks, SUPs, pedal boats, rowboats, outrigger canoes, inflatable flamingos retrofitted with bike cranks—if it moves without wind or fuel, it’s fair game. And yes, there are prizes. The total prize pot typically tops $10,000 (based on the number of racers at the starting line), and the first to finish takes half of it. The rest is split evenly between three class winners and one Random Hero—chosen from the finishers, so even last place has a chance at the cash. This is the sail we hope to never use. Ever. But like so many other safety measures, it gives us peace of mind just knowing it’s there. It’s a storm jib — 🧡bright orange🧡 so that if we ever do need it, visibility won’t be a problem (because that’s definitely a moment we’ll want to be seen). It’s designed to be set over our furling system where the genoa normally lives, so we don’t have to wrestle down a huge sail on deck in the middle of a storm. Just roll out the storm jib, and it’s ready ⛵️ No, we hadn’t seen one like it before either. But it makes a whole lot of sense now. Have you seen one like this before?
