I’m back on the mainland after months on a quiet island in southern Japan. Rush hour. Trains arriving. A different rhythm of life. Yet at sunset, something familiar appears. The same sun that lights a remote island also glows over steel tracks and tangled wires in the city. Different places. Different rhythms. The same light. — Lowell Sheppard is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and author of Longevity and the Art of Community: Lessons from Japan. Through the Never Too Late Academy Longevity Project, he travels across Japan exploring the secrets of long, healthy, independent lives.
I’ve just left the remote island village of 29 people in southern Japan, where my boat is moored, and arrived in Tokyo for a conference on aging and gerontology with IAFOR ( The International Academic Forum) Before that, I’m walking across the city to meet my Tokyo “MOAI”—a small, regular community that stays connected both in person and digitally. It’s a reminder of something I’m seeing again and again across Japan’s longevity hotspots: Community isn’t one thing. It’s many. And perhaps that’s part of the art of living long and well. Lowell Sheppard is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Founder of the Never Too Academy, Special Advisor with IAFOR ( International Academic Forum), and author of ten books. Through Japan Solo, he shares field notes on longevity, community, and independent living across Japan. His forthcoming book, Longevity and the Art of Community: Lessons from Japan, explores how community supports living long—and living well. #JapanSolo #Longevity #Community #HealthyAging #TokyoLife
Just wrapped up the IAFOR Aging and Gerontology Conference in Tokyo. 865 delegates from 65 countries, bringing together perspectives that are international, intercultural, and interdisciplinary. A few days of plenaries, panels, and parallel sessions— and above all, a genuine exchange of ideas. A powerful reminder of the breadth and depth of research on aging, and the importance of learning from one another. More reflections to come. — Lowell Lowell Sheppard is a sailor, author, and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, sharing insights on longevity, community, and life in Japan through the Pacific Solo channel and Never Too Late Academy. #iafor #Tokyo #Aging #Gerontology #Longevity #AcademicConference #GlobalResearch #HealthyAging #NeverTooLate #PacificSolo #Education #Leadership
