Hatamin Island sits near Komodo National Park, off north-west Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The Komodo region is home to some of the healthiest coral reefs on Earth, but Hatamin’s reef was nearly destroyed by dynamite fishing. Thanks to coral restoration led by Coral Guardian and the local community, the reef and its fish are coming back. 🪸 What happened to the coral reef at Hatamin Island? Hatamin’s reef was once beautiful, full of colourful corals and fish, which made fishing easy for local fishermen. But destructive dynamite fishing took its toll. The corals were broken, and there were no fish left for local fishermen to catch. 🌱 How was the reef restored? Coral Guardian stepped in, working with the local community to restore the reef through coral transplantation. Coral fragments are attached to metal structures on the seabed, where they grow and bring the reef back to life. The area around Hatamin is now a Marine Protected Area. 🐟 What has changed for the local fishermen? As the coral grows back, the fish are returning. Local fishermen say they feel more secure because they see more fish, and they can now fish closer to home again. 🎥 In this video, you’ll see: Hatamin Island and the reefs of the Komodo region How dynamite fishing damaged the coral reef Healthy, restored coral gardens full of fish A Coral Guardian team member and a local fisherman sharing the reef’s story 🌏 Why it matters Healthy coral reefs protect marine biodiversity and support the livelihoods of coastal communities. Hatamin shows how community-led conservation can turn a damaged reef into a thriving ecosystem again. ⛵ Visit Hatamin Island and the coral reefs of eastern Indonesia by traditional sailing ship with SeaTrek Sailing Adventures.
