The mast is what transforms Vela into a true sailing vessel, harnessing the power of the wind to carry us around the world. ? Standing tall at 18 meters above the waterline, it's more than just a sail holder-it's a hub of essential gear: ? Wind instruments tell us the direction and speed of the wind. ? VHF antenna keeps us in communication with other vessels. ? Navigation lights guide us safely in the dark. ?? Radar and reflector detect other ships, weather squalls, and make sure we're seen. And let's not forget the sails that make it all happen: ? Genoa (head sail): Easily rolled in and out from the cockpit. ?? Main sail: Adds stability and power, with reefing controlled from the safety of the cockpit. ? Asymmetrical spinnaker: A colorful, lightweight sail for catching light winds downwind. Whether it's cruising calm waters or bracing for strong winds, everything is managed safely from the cockpit. Our mast is not just a symbol of freedom-it's a feat of engineering that keeps us moving forward. Do you have a favorite sail to work with? We stopped on over to Long Island from George Town, Bahamas for a few days. We anchored out in Thompson Bay, near Salt Pond. There's a dinghy dock that is privately owned north of the Government Dock. We've been told that the owners are very gracious to allow cruisers to use it...and we agree. It's super nice. Just outside of the fence, there are some garbage cans for garbage. I forget about the exact name of the street, but I learned it's named after the family that owns the property nearby, Basil. Take a right on Queens Highway and the Farmer's Market is on the right. Perhaps a quarter mile down the road. We bought Long Island Salt, Long Island Pepper Salt, Hot Sauce, Fresh Dill, Fresh Basil and Zucchini Bread. We'll definitely be going back should we return to Long Island...and I expect we will. #sailingcatamaran #boatlife #catamaran #travelvlog #digitalnomad #lifestyle #sailboats #sailing #cruising #offgrid #nomad #sail #boat #multihull #whileone #sailingwhileone #bigseas #lifeafter50 #sailinglife
