We flew directly from Europe to Norfolk to ready While One for Season 2.
We learned a lot from last year and spent the better part of July and these handful of days prior to heading south, provisioning and doing maintenance on While One.
In this Episode is a How To change the engine and transmission oil on a Honda, 15 H.P. engine. There is also a How To on ascending the mast to fix a problem while trying to raise our headsail.
It's a lot of hard work.
We also successfully completed sailing around Cape Hatteras for the first time as a couple, without the assistance of a captain and his first mate. This trip was cause for much deliberation. We constantly watched our forecast models on PredictWind, read Chris Parker's forecasts and the National Hurricane Center and made our own interpretations.
Our current insurance policy requires us not to navigate south of Cape Hatteras from July thru October. The weather was shaping up for a perfect rounding...but doing so would result in us being south of Hatteras before November. We reached out to the insurance agent on Thursday, requesting permission...it took them practically a week to give us a written endorsement and by that time, we had already made the trip. Suffice it to say, it was a good decision. The weather was perfect but I suspect a storm could have developed in the GOMEX or Atlantic.

After flying to Cupertino to turn in our Computers and having one final goodbye to colleagues at Apple, we returned to Palm Cay Marina to get provisioned and await the arrival of our friends.
We had a single day of weather delay, which allowed us to take advantage of the facilities at Palm Cay Marina. The next day, we head on over to the Exumas where we spent the next 10 days or so making our way down to George Town.
In this episode, we visited the following islands and places:
Palm Cay Marina (New Providence Island)
Shroud Cay
Long Cay
Normans Cay
Warderick Wells
Staniel Cay
Lee Stocking Island
George Town
The Land and Sea Park is totally awesome and a must see. We can't wait to make it back in Season 2.

In this Episode, we sail from Key Biscayne down to Key West. We stop at Rodriguez Key and also Marathon, each for a night. We had some great sailing most of the way down.
We encountered a problem trying to sock our Oxley Levante Parasail. It was definitely a learning experience. Then, we got held up from making our way to Garrison Bight to grab an anchor ball due to Offshore World Championships. We've never seen boat racing before...it was quite amazing.
Key West was awesome. We spent about 3 weeks, in total, exploring Key West. We visit Sloppy Joes, the Green Parrot, Earnest Hemingway's house and Papa Pilar's distillery, to name a few spots. We saw the Garcia Project at The Key West Theater...super cool.
I also walk through the rigging of our Parasail.

This video takes us back to January of 2024 and shows just a piece of what life in Georgetown on a sailboat is like. Sherine and I spent our birthdays there this year and there's many great restaurants we found worth of our celebration.
We had the goal to make it down to the Ragged Islands but, unfortunately, the weather systems were frequent and not spaced out enough. We learned that there's little refuge from W and NW winds should a storm come. Furthermore, we also heard that the Ragged Islands were very crowded with too many boats jockeying for two few anchorages....maybe this years.
So, we ended up spending a bunch of time in Georgetown and ultimately used it as a "jumping off" point for several of our visitors. We did find the time to take a trip to Long Island between storms and we're so glad we did. Long Island is quiet and a bit sleepy but it has a ton of stuff to do and go see. We saw the Columbus Monument, a Blue Hole and the largest sharks I've seen to date in the Bahamas.
Long Island has great provisioning and, in fact, we were able to find some items there which were out of stock in Georgetown.
Check it out.

New beginnings are aways a struggle. Quitting a job, selling a house, packing up, selling or giving away all of our belongings is stressful. I hope this episode of Our New Chapter Begins captures this. This episode is true to this channel's mission of documenting what it takes to retire early and pursue a cruising lifestyle.
Phew, it's been an incredibly busy 12 months. This Episode is all about the last 6 months in San Jose and all of the struggles and work it took to sell our home and move out of San Jose. We've got a trip to Chicago and a hike in Muir Woods. The last two weekends in San Jose we say Willie Nelson, Bob Weir and Wolf Bros., Avett Brothers and Larkin Poe.
What an awesome start of our dream.
Thanks for watching! There is Life After 50

After leaving our boat for a week or so at Palm Cay marina and flying back to the states for Christmas celebrations, we returned and departed for Allen Cay!
Allen Cay is one of the northernmost Cays of the Exuma chain. Allen Cay, and some of the neighboring Cays, have a population of iguanas that, I believe, are not found anywhere else in the world. That said, they are very fun to watch and cruisers often bring apples, grapes and lettuce to feed them. They are protected by the Bahamian Government.
After Allen Cay, we moved down to Hawks Next Cay to anchor overnight. Unfortunately, we didn't really pay close enough attention to the weather and the wind forecasts and had a night of very poor sleep.
Over from Hawks Next Cay, we went over to Normans Cay for a great dinner at McDuffs then over to Shroud Cay after a couple of days to visit two of our favorite beaches and the very peaceful and tranquil mangroves.
We end to episode at Maverick Wells, the Crown Jewel of the Exumas.
Check out how we do our laundry and watch a mishap flying our Oxley Levante Parasail.

This week, we scout out a bargain on some cheap winches... that are on the other side of Europe.
To take advantage of the awesome price, Khiara managed to find cheap flights to Faro, Portugal and got to check out a salvage warehouse full of old boat parts from boats.

We start where we finished up last episode - 100 miles offshore on a 4 day trip to Madeira.
After a great first day, we started to settle into the swing of things underway. With the motor on to get through the Azores high, we saw a disturbing thing while doing the final engine checks of the night - WATER where it should be.
Immediately, all the floorboards and hatches came up as we searched for the source of the water. The first test - tasting it to see if it was salty or fresh.
After solving that problem and hoping for no more during the trip, we continued to settle into life underway as we show you what it's really like on our boat 300 miles off shore.

In this episode, we sail from Terciera to Sao Miguel in the Azores.
I (Khiara) decided to be captain for the day and as soon as we hoisted a sail, something went wrong!
After dealing with the issue in a very captainly manner, we then sailed the 90 mile stretch between the islands in beautiful but calming conditions.
We arrived in the morning and the next day set off to explore the island. Being a lover of rosy lee, our first stop was Cha Gorreana, (most likely) Europe's oldest and largest tea plantation.
From there we set off discovering lakes, bubbling hot springs and beautiful island views as well as some of it's amusing inhabitants!
A few day later, after finishing with the fun and frivolity of exploring a new island, we got down to some work... boat work! Which has been few and far between for the last few weeks so we actually kind of enjoyed doing it. We got to work installing a repaired radar that got delivered to the marina, and to see whether it finally worked and if we'd have radar capability in future!

After our disastrous attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean a few years ago, it started to dawn on us that we were going to try it again… very soon.
We had officially arrived in Bermuda after a 6 days sail from St Martin, with LOTS of leaks, a few broken blocks and plenty of caulking to do in order to get us ready for a trip across the ocean again.
Being a little scarred from last time, we were trying to prepare for EVERY eventuality… including checking the propeller shaft, JUST in case it had moved! It was a massive sigh of relief that we confirmed that it had not moved and if something broke on this passage, it most likely wasn’t gong to be that.
It took us about a week of preparation to get us ready to go again. Now we just had to wait for a suitable weather window. So while we were waiting, we decided to rent a scooter and do a more thorough exploration of the island than we had done last time.
Our first and big stop of the journey was the beautiful beaches of Bermuda. Spotting HUGE fish, snorkeling and discoing little fairy ponds in the cliffs. It was such a gorgeous place that we ended up spending a lot longer here than planned and after ways had a late lunch at the oldest pub in Bermuda, the Swizzle Inn.
While we were there, we identified a pretty good window which we might have been able to cross in.
