If you have spent time near southeast Florida, you know about the intense Northerlies that come through during the winter months. You have also heard that you don't want to be in the Gulf Stream during them; the Gulf Stream flows south to north, which, in presence of a northerly wind, results in nasty sea conditions. This was definitely a risky sail and I got to put myself and the boat to the test.

I finally left Florida after nearly 4 months! There were still some uncertainties regarding the steering and solar, plus navigating around a head-on wind, but I made it! It was an overall great crossing and I am so excited to finally be home.

I was really looking forward to a night sail... but the engine had other ideas. My brand new engine from May has struggled to start quite a few times in the past few months; however, Sunpower Diesel pushed it off and didn't respond. Now I have another big issue. I made it to Puerto Rico! But it's not my final destination... and I still need to travel over 600 nautical miles to make it to Grenada AND it's beginning to be peak hurricane season. The squalls are picking up and the nice weather windows are getting harder and harder to find. IF you have a boat, WATCH THIS!!!! A lot of sailors learn as we go and as things break... this is just one thing I was hoping wouldn't be too much of an issue. My shaft seal started leaking... and the bilge pumps stopped working. BUT after it was managed, it was another beautiful week fishing with the Spanish Wells fishing guys. So many beautiful memories and relationships were made and I hope you enjoy it.
