Teams of scientists have discovered several new species in the Florida Keys and in honor of Key West legend Jimmy Buffett, named these new species after him. One of the new species is the Keys Margarita Snail (Cayo margarita) for its lemon-lime color that looks like the margaritas of Margaritaville. (Bieler et al. 2023) Another new species is Gnathia jimmybuffetti, a tiny, 3mm-long gnathiid isopod that is extra special because it's the 1st new gnathiid isopod to be discovered there in 100 years (Erasmus et al. 2023). To read more about these two new Jimmy Buffett inspired species, check out the publications below: Bieler et al. 2023 - https://doi.org/10.7717/peerj.15854 Erasmus et al. 2023 - https://doi.org/10.5343/bms.2023.0040 #marinebiology #science #sciencefacts #florida #floridakeys #margaritaville #news #species #ocean #biology

Little is known about this iconic, massive gathering of giant spider #crabs (Leptomithrax gaimardii) in Port Phillip Bay, #australia Very few studies have been published on this phenomenon and these Australian natives in general, leaving many questions unanswered to why they gather, how many there are, and how they live their lives. Scientists have observed crabs molting during this aggregation and suggest that they do so in such large numbers to help protect them when they are soft and vulnerable to predators after a molt. To better understand them, scientists started a citizen science project called, Spider Crab Watch. If you see a giant spider crab you can document your sighting, adding it to a live database. You can also help build out this database from land by classifying some of the thousands of images they have taken. #marinebiology #science #sciencefacts #ocean #citizenscience #waterlust #ecology
