Let's face it, when you are out sailing, this is one of the most important pieces of kit on your yacht. I prefer to go the next size up than the recommended. Yes, that's more weight, but your anchor â is your first insurance on your safety and your boat.

Use a scope of 4 or even 5:1 (chain length vs depth) up to 7:1 or more in hairy conditions. Remember to add on your bow roller height. So in a depth of 10m your 'real' depth is 11m if you have a bridgedeck clearance of 1m. And remember, you are going to let out your bridle at the end. Take those metres off before you attach.

4/1 can be difficult to do in the Med when it's busy as many day trippers just let out 3/1 or even 2/1. Make a call based on the conditions and do a swim around. You can always let out more chain when the anchorage calms down at night.
