This might change the way you approach your next anchorage. I had a rough week making me exhausted being alone on my boat. Winds peaking at Tropical Storm force and never ending squalls for 5 days. Dragging boats and hard decisions to make within minutes. I choose to share the reality of a solo sailors life also at anchor and how I deal with challenges you dont want even with crew onboard. Hopefully I managed to share some take aways on how to and what to and also how I approach anchorage from a more tactical point of view.
I learned once again to trust my instincts and also learned a lesson to stay faithful to my own rules and strategies when it comes to anchoring where and why etc.

Even though this is season 4 on youtube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor for decades. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience as a captain in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.

I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore. I enjoy sharing my mistakes as well my knowledge and experience without trying to teach you anything.
In this episode, I am sharing my experience and knowledge of handling my Bavaria 55 mass-production yacht safely through a violent storm.
It’s a big difference between racing and being on a long distance sail in remote places. Some might jump to conclusions thats wrong. This is a defensive way of sailing in winds above 55 kts and preparation for above 60. I have a huge responsibility as people watching can and often will copy my strategy. Hence the fact this is not bragging or over selling. It’s realistic and safety in mind m. This is a more technical video where I reveal my strategies in real-life heavy-weather sailing. We are talking above 55+ knots of wind where things really starts to happen. My strategies with a storm sail and reefed Main has proven to work above 60 knots of wind. The last episode I was not rigged with storm sail as it was not predicted. So I’m showing the limitations and what I did when seeing 57. Not knowing how much it was going to be, I took a break to decide next move. If it was going to reach 60 I would have to either continue with my safety mode, or go with reef 3 only, meaning going up against the wind to get Main up with my violent storm reef. Without telling you how to, I am sharing how I do. This might not work for you or even with your boat. And this is my point. I recommend knowing not only your own limitations but even your boat's limitations. I even share why a heaving to strategy could be the fast track to send your rig into the ocean.
The same goes for a furling genoa. This does have some limitations and can be dangerous. Lots of dismasting incidents occur for some obvious reasons but are somehow rarely talked about. Human error leading to serious problems is often mistaken for poor quality, and very popular to point at production yachts instead of looking in the mirror. Lots of myths false information, and even dangerous advice. Not all strategies work on all boats. Different sizes and hull designs often give different results. If I did not know my boat's limitations, if I had not been on top of maintenance, and even having experience my rigg would come down. This is key to understanding sailing safely and surviving a violent storm. Hopefully, some will find this valuable and even point some of you in a new direction learning more about how to deal with situations on your own. As normal I do not claim to have the blueprint, and nor do I say this is how to. I'm sharing what's proven to work for me.
I am even pointing out the biggest and most frequent misunderstanding. A cutter stay is good but not the best solution for heavy-weather sailing either. Unless you only have a small storm jib there for above 50 kt sailing. I still have not met anyone with this permanently, instead, they have slightly smaller genoa mostly used to fly wing on wing. Meaning we would have the exact same challenge. Changing sails is my biggest challenge alone at sea, and this means my violent storm solution does have an Achilles heel. I can not handle a violent storm as I want to if not planned. So what I share is the consequence of a weather prediction turning out to be seriously out of target. European models on predictions are normally extremely good. However local phenomenon can sometimes be missed. A storm jib in a bag attached works fine, but my experience is it can not be furled in. So as a solo sailor with a storm jib thats not possible to furle create another challenge. What to do when it reach 75.

In this episode, I'm talking about my Pacific thoughts and also take you with me in parts of the real world of sailing and navigating through a covid world. I'm still trying to be positive and optimistic about my sailing adventure, even though reality sometimes is challenging. I have not given up on my pacific dream but it's still difficult to say when this chapter of my next adventure will start. At the moment it just seems stupid to even think about crossing the Panama canal and go out the big blue. Lots of people say they have crossed the Pacific yet they only sailed to French Polynesia. To be fair that's not even half of the Pacific, closer to one-third. Just to put things in perspective and then imagine all the closed islands and borders. Going now would be like happy go lucky.... and miss out on a lot!

In this episode GETTING HARDER IN PARADISE I'm sharing my concern about the fact not everyone handles lockdown well and the obvious side effects. 1:38 - When sailors starts calling the Coast Guard on neighbors and do Neighbor Watching its a dangerous path into a world that only few not so good regimes appreciates. In difficult times we should help each other and be kind. Not being racists and shaming sailors on social media. I wanted to spotlight last weeks shocking experience but also explain our reason for again going into a marina.
Its not all bad as we are staying positive and Im even babysitting my friends kids this week with lots of fun. Sharing my week as realistic and up to date as possible while we enjoy another beautiful piece of Grenada.
I`m very thankful for being a guest on this Island and it's still among my favorite destinations. And its not hopeless as we can still get things done during the week. Its only the weekend lockdowns that's a bit boring.

In this episode, we take a break from boat work to explore Tahuata in the Marquises (French Polynesia). Thauata is the neighbor island to Hiva Ova and is even a bit more exotic to us than Hiva Ova. Dolphins and gigantic manta rays, sharks and so much to discover. We do some hiking and even play with dolphins so close we could even touch them if we did not know better. We move BE FREE to the neighboring bay for some shopping and to get petrol for our dinghy. After a beautiful experience again with amazingly friendly Polynesians we move back to our favorite beach with lots of fruits and even managed to get some petrol for our dinghy. Our opinion so far is the beach in Thauata is the prettiest in the Marquises. We also say See you later to our new Norwegian friends that are sailing in the opposite direction for now. French Polynesia is really amazing and we truly enjoy our stay here.

It was a smart move to go into a resort marina during no movement weekends. However things are getting better here in paradise as no movement weekends are over for now, and even beach time is increased. For us staying at a resort its different rules and we can live almost like normal, enjoying our time and get things done. We also have time to play around and have fun.

Sailing through ELECTRO STORMS on my last days towards Panama.
Thunderstorms or ELECTRO STORMS as the phenomena is called in this part of the Caribbean is no fun to sail through. I share my strategy and how I use my tools onboard trying to avoid the worst ones that can scare the most experienced sailor. Also having a really nice time out there and hope I manage to share the joy I had as well. Im also on purpous sailing through some safe squalls to have some fast sailing in this part where its almost like sailing through the doldrums. Using my experience to find the wind, avoiding electro storms and having great time enjoying the silence as well. This is the third and last part of the mini series Martinique to Panama.

After the anchor was down in Fatu Hiva not only were we greeted welcome by old friends, but were almost choked by how bad BE FREE was looking after all the water splash for so many days. We take an express tour of the island to the waterfall, enjoy local hospitality, and even do some trading for fruits. A spectacular island that was one of my hero Thor Heyerdal's favorite islands. In fact, he spent his honeymoon here with Liv after they were married. Such a feeling to have solid ground under our feet again, and to see this island that is one of the islands that has been high up on my list for such a long time. Unfortunately, we could not stay long as we had to sail towards Hiva Ova to check in and had a lot on our hands onboard BE FREE before we could set sail again.

As a sailor your boat will never stop surprising you! Its a saying if you think everything is okay with your boat it just means you have not yet discovered what's wrong. I believe lots of sailors can relate to this, and in this episode Kylie again was in for a surprise. Im going dinghy shopping as you know my old one is dead. A dinghy is my car and I need a reliable one. Going out the Pacific with a patched dinghy is not a good idea. Same with sails and other things, it needs to be in top condition. So Im also preparing my sails and other projects while waiting for Kylie.

Its boat wrecks almost everywhere here. Even though the most famous one was removed this week there is still plenty left. This week's update I'm just giving you a glimpse of regular days as it's not always epic parties and exciting things going on. We finally got our StarLink delivered as some of the last-minute shipments before we set sail into the pacific. Our dinghy was almost destroyed after using the worst dinghy dock ever and experienced some challenges with the huge difference in tidal waters on the Pacific side. After moving the navigation screen from the nav station up into the cockpit it left a big hole in the wall down below. So we decided to make the workstation for video editing a bit more streamlined and with some plywood managed to organize things a bit better, not to forget a safe and permanent install of the iMac onboard. We have been working hard the days after our canal transit to be ready for our upcoming pacific crossing. Not everything found its way to the video as recording everything slows us down. But we have changed the water pressure pump and serviced our watermaker and even the generator only to mention a few things. Our goal is to make everything ready for our long passage and then use some days to just relax and rest before we start the longest sail ever.

This must be a record breaking charter week and a charter boat companies worst nightmare! It could qualify for being the worlds most expensive week for both the leaser and the charter boat company.
A company rents 80 bare boat charter and damage and destroy several of them. I can't tell how sorry I feel for the charter company after having this situation. It have been two tough years for anyone in tourism and especially for charter fleets around the world, and Martinique is no exception. So finally coming back in business again after lockdowns and tough times having several boats out of business must be a challenge. It's not like you can just replace a boat over night on a Caribbean island.
Whats the difference between a rally and a regatta or a race? A race or regatta is in most insurance companies not cowered. This is why it`s often called a rally instead. Re naming an event does not make it less risky. Hence the fact I never participate in rallies or regattas with my boat. BE FREE is my home and I can't afford to loos her.
I could made videos of really weird things and mistakes I see around me every day. But I dont belive others mistakes is interesting unless it's some take away from it. In this case I belive there is a few things to learn from it, and Im trying to share this with you.
Im also sharing some daily life things and giving you a short update on my situation here.

Refit delayed so this is a between refitting episode. Small jobs and daily life while waiting for parts from Sweden. Almost done with everything but four rods are putting everything on hold. In this happy days episode we are having lots of fun even though we manage to do quite a lot of boat work as well. My Swedish friends leave their kids with me and BE FREE is converted to a kindergarten. Hanging out with new and old friends her E-Foiling and dinghy sailing. I'm trying E-Foiling for the first time and helping Kylie out with her leaky window.

Traveling in a world of COVID, is it even possible? It is, at least here in the Caribbean but it's not always as easy. However, you need time and always look for options. Find out how and the reasons for my decisions and why I sailed nonstop from Carriacou to Martinique. Clearing in procedures and how it works today as my experience traveling between islands in the Caribbean.
Disclaimer: Remember nowadays things change rapidly due to COVID travel restrictions and rules and protocols may be subject to change shortly after this video was published. I therefore highly recommend reading up on destinations before you make your own decisions and plan your travel. There are some crazy stories out here of people who had really bad experiences trespassing borders and not having documents in good order. Freshly updated information is key to your success traveling nowadays.
Hope you enjoy this video and remember what I say or do in my videos might not be the correct thing for you. I'm just showing you how I do things without claiming this is the only correct way to do things.
Thank you for watching and subscribing 🙏🏻

About this channel:
I'm Sailing singlehanded around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Currently in the Caribbean after I had to return from Panama because of lockdown and closed canal stopping me from reaching the Pacific. I have not given up the Pacific dream and my goal is to transit Panama and head out the Pacific during 2021

I'm just a normal person sharing my adventure.
In this episode, we sail fast to Nuku Hiva in the Marquises (French Polynesia). French Polynesia is really amazing and we truly enjoy our stay here. Averaging 8,9 knots from anchorage to anchorage is pretty good knowing the total distance is 85 nautical miles. We already experienced how expensive food is in Polynesia, and especially in the Marquesas. We don't complain but can't really hide our chock either. Obviously, most things have to be shipped here, either by boat or plane. So this adds to the price level even though some products are labeled red meaning they are considered as necessary and therefore subsidised by France. We are for the first time getting close to sharks and are again blown away by nature and Polynesia in general. Our backup autopilot is not so happy with fast sailing so we had to hand steer this leg. We know that in Tahiti we will get what we need to fix our hydraulics so we just have to live and go with what we have for now. We already learned about the history of cannibalism here, and it's from a recent episode only some years ago. The tradition of cannibalism officially abounded a long time ago. Traveling in Polynesia is such a blessing and experience for a lifetime. Just as I dreamt of when looking forward to this great adventure. ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever we have time for it. I used to sail singlehanded and occasionally have sailing friends onboard. But now the permanent crew aboard BE FREE is including Gee from Holland. We are now exploring the pacific ocean.
Even though this is season 5 on youtube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I sailed several seasons in the Medetorian prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.

I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.
With some humor, I'm sharing the irony of having problems with enough power onboard while trying to finish my episode about why I don't believe in electric or so-called hybrid solutions.
All this while waiting not only for better weather but also for the required inspection onboard from the immigration officers in Saumlaki, Indonesia
I'm sharing some secret dreams about how I could add more solar panels on my yacht, and even showing you some design sketches. This would require a hard dodger or a combination with a hardtop on my yacht.
But right now having enough power onboard to only edit and upload videos is a big challenge.
It definitely puts the electric sailboat in perspective from the real world.

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I'm a sailor with a YouTube channel and not a YouTuber. Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser mostly solo, making videos whenever we have time for it.
Comfortable at sea with 4 decades of sailing experience and hundreds of thousands of miles behind me.
Even though this is season 6 on YouTube I did not make that many videos in the beginning, and obviously not from my entire sailing life. Before full-time sailing 6 years ago, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing and racing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience as a captain in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.
Don't Refit Your Mast Without Watching THIS FIRST! 6 hints to avoid a disaster is something you should watch BEFORE you start on a full refit job on your mast and standing rigging. Not all rigging companies know what they are doing, and not everyone cares about your safety. Not everyone understands what a full refit of the mast and running rigging should be. Rigging experts show us how and why the only way to do professional rigging refitting is pin-to-pin. My dear sailing friend Kylie is lucky she made it to Martinique. Watch this video to find out why!
I hope this will give some insights in what can go wrong by sharing experience and some extreme examples of ignorance. This is not a revenge video, but a true story focusing only on facts.
I really hope you find this helpful and educational.

WHO CAN DO IT FASTER? Kylie or Thomas racing a car vs a dinghy from Fort Judy Beach to LA PHARE BLEU MARINA?
If you wanna jump straight to the race it starts at 6:39
In this episode we share some of the things that's been going on last week but also our crazy race in true TOP GEAR style. We had so much fun making this and the race was authentic. Trying our best to have fun between curfew and no movement weekends.
