THE FALKEN SAGAS: An Epic Adventure with 59º North Sailing Along The Viking Route:
Newfoundland to Greenland to Iceland.

Welcome to the first episode of The Falken Sagas series. I left Triteia in her southern hemisphere’s winter berth in Whangarei, New Zealand and flew back to North America to meet up with Andy Schell and 59º North Sailing. Andy had invited me to join him on a high latitude adventure onboard their Farr 65, Falken, to sail the Viking Route from Newfoundland to Greenland, transit Prince Christian Sound and sail on to the West Fjords of Iceland across the North Atlantic. Along for this adventure was Andy’s First Mate Vilma and the crew of the Falken; Jim, Matt, Richa, Johnathan, Charlotte, Gavin, Alejandro & Nick.

I have made several long format films and video episodes documenting our journey and adventures. Starting with preparations in Newfoundland then our passage to Greenland, our time cruising in Southern Greenland and our passage to Iceland. All of the drone footage you see in the films was shot by Andy Schell, otherwise all the footage was filmed by myself on a gopro.

About 59º North: @59NorthSailing

ANDY SCHELL & MIA KARLSSON started 59º North to pursue their own passion for offshore sailing and to share it with other like-minded people out there who yearn to see what's over the horizon & learn about themselves in the process. We set an ambitious schedule, sailing 10,000 MILES PER YEAR making landfall in ports from the Caribbean to the Arctic, Bermuda, Europe, Cuba, Canada & more, with the world's oceans as our stomping ground. Since 2015 our team has grown to include some of our best friends and like-minded sailors – AUGUST SANDBERG, EMMA GARSCHAGEN, RYAN FINSTAD, LEE CUMBERLAND & RYAN ELLISON – all working together to pursue our passions.
In 2020 we started THE QUARTERDECK, a unique-to-sailing online membership platform where we dive deep on the art of seamanship. Members have direct access to us, we have a growing resource library of onboard checklists, SOPs, logbooks and more, and we’ve moved all of our LIVE sessions onto the platform for members only.
Since 2013 we’ve published weekly podcasts on sailing, and now have three distinct shows — ON THE WIND, the main interview show hosted by Andy Schell, August Sandberg , Nikki Henderson & Emma Garschagen; THE QUARTERDECK PODCAST, a more technical, companion show to our online platform; and SAILING STORIES, a unique, serialized podcast showcasing ‘tales from the high seas, told week by week.’ All of our podcasts are free, and always will be — available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
If you've dreamed of seeing STARS DOWN TO THE HORIZON, if you yearn to LOSE SIGHT OF LAND for days on end, if you want to UNPLUG from the world ashore and TRAVEL TO NEW LANDS at a human pace, then join us for the OFFSHORE SAILING ADVENTURE of a lifetime. We'll see you on the high seas. HOLD FAST!

Episode #181 - Plastimo Water Bladder Install Option

Hello Friends,

On this episode we show you inside our fouled forward water tank. We decided to insert a water bladder inside the old tank for potable water until we can get our large integrated water tank built in the bilge.

This video will show you our process and might help you do a similar install if you have an old water tank that is beyond saving.

Episode #294 : Season 9 : The South Pacific

Hello Friends,

On this episode I depart Nanuya Lailai Island and make way for Naviti Island in search of a downed WWII fighter plane that lays sunken underwater in the Lagoon.

After finding good anchorage near a long sandy beach I headed a shore snorkel gear and a machete and set off the island on an over grown trail. I eventually found the site and swam out to have a look at the small plane.

you can find out more information about the plane and its pilot here: https://pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/p-39/fiji.html

Episode 393 : Season 12 : Sailing Australia

Hello Friends,
On this episode we visit the historic Endeavour River at Cooktown where Captain Cook and his crew beached the HMS Endeavour to save her after striking a near by reef and officially discovering they were trapped inside what we now call the Great Barrier Reef.

We visited the Cooktown Museum and enjoyed seeing all of the artifacts from the varied past of this region. The highlight for me was seeing the anchor and a canon from the Endeavour that were jettisoned to save the ship when she was hard on the reef.

After a nice stay in Cooktown we took advantage of the winds and had a great over night sail to Lizard Island.

Episode 328 : Season 10 : New Zealand - Aotearoa

Hello Friends,
On this episode I had a surprise nice day when the weather was forecasted to be howling! I took full advantage of it (which was good because the next three days were all storms) and headed down to Mansion House Bay to explore the famous historic mansion and its grounds. For a modest fee I got to explore this beautiful Mansion.

Some info from online about the Mansion:
"Mansion House on Kawau Island was originally the residence for the mine superintendent on the island. In 1862 the island and home were purchased by Sir George Grey, one of New Zealand’s most influential and controversial political figures.

Kawau Island was purchased by Sir George Grey at the time he was serving his second term as Governor.

Grey had a keen interest in the natural sciences and in horticulture, and was an enthusiastic collector of plants and animals from around the world. Between 1862 and 1888 he spent a fortune developing Kawau as his island home, planting hundreds of different plant species and introducing many exotic and native animals including wallabies, kookaburras, weka, peacocks, zebras and monkeys.

Sir George Grey enlarged and remodelled the former residence of the mine superintendent, which was built between 1845 and 1847 as his Kawau home. Sir Frederick Thatcher (architect, cleric, and Grey’s private secretary) was responsible for the design.

Known today as Mansion House, it has been in public ownership since 1967 and was extensively restored to its former appearance in 1977-80 after many years of neglect. It has been furnished with a valuable collection of antique furnishings largely donated or loaned to DOC, and is open to the public."

After my tour I enjoyed some lunch and went for a hike and explored the ruins of the former copper mine.

Episode #231 : YACHT DELIVERY CHRONICLES : The Hawaiian Adventures : Part 2

Hello Friends,

Welcome to Part 2 of the latest installment of Yacht Delivery Chronicles. On this episode Esteban and myself head to his boat at Nawiliwili Harbor from Port Allen on Kauai and prepare the boat for immediate departure.

We weren't on island for even 5 hours before we were untying the lines and pushing off into the night. Our quick turn around was due to a forecast for increasing winds within 24 hours time.

After a lumpy night crawling across the channel and me getting seasick for the first time in many moons we found ourselves off the coast of Oahu with the Triton's beta marine engine overheating. We came about and pointed in bound for Waianae Harbor. After 23 hours of passage we were finally tied up at the dock in harbor for the night.

The next day we made the push for Honolulu and had a wonderful day on the water bringing Esteban's boat to her new home port.

On this episode I show you guys how I went about installing my Digital Yacht GPS / AIS / VHF combo antenna for my Digital Yacht iAis receiver. I wanted to install it on the stern rail and to run the cables down the tube of the stern pulpit and into the aft lazarette.

Hoping to avoid removing the entire stern pulpit I decided to try and drill through the backing plate and into the tube itself. My plan worked and I was able to complete the job easily with the help of my friend Christian of Sailing Vessel Antares.

Thanks for watching this project throwback video I hope it helps you in some way.

Until next time,

Season 8 : The Hawaiian Adventures : Episode #217

Hello Friends,

On this episode I awake in the beautiful Makua anchorage and enjoy getting to see the local spinner dolphins do their tricks. Once the coffee kicked in I swam the 600 yards to shore and went in search of shoreside adventures!

After locating the hidden trailhead, I made my way up the short but steep trail to the Upper Kaneana Caves (Upper Makua Caves) and took in the breath taking view! Once back down to the road I took my chances and explored the Lower Kaneana Cave and hoped not to get eaten by the shapeshifter Nanaue, son of Kamohoali'i, who is said to turn himself into a human to lure his dinner into the cave where he changes back into a shark to devour his victims!!!! (barely made it out alive)

What an amazing anchorage this is!!!!

Season 8 : Hawaiian Adventures : Episode #209

Hello Friends,

On this weeks episode I meet up with Oahu Legend Big Island Mike (https://www.bigislandmike.com) who is kind enough to show me around Oahu.

Big Island Mike rode as a sponsored BMX rider for S&M Bikes and Monster Energy Drinks through out the 90s which lead to him traveling the world riding in Matt Hoffman's Bicycle Stunt Series. Mike was a judge for the X-Games for 25 years and has been tattooing for almost as long. Mike tattoos in Los Angeles at the legendary Shamrock Social Club (http://shamrocksocialclub.com) and in Oahu at Hale Nui Tattoos (https://halenuitattoos.com) and at his private studio on the west side the Secret Ninja Warehouse.

I was introduced to Mike by my tattooer and our mutual friend Shawn Barber and I mentioned to Mike that I planned on finding and skateboarding at the legendary Wallows ditch made famous by the "Search for Animal Chin" video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgBm0Ly5Rmg). Mike said he would take me and so we spend the day living out my boyhood dream of skating this legendary spot and we hit another skatepark and finally ended up at the Secret Ninja Warehouse.

At the end of this episode there are some clips of Bobby Kimani doing some flatland bike tricks that are amazing. check him out on instagram at http://www.instagram.com/bobbykimani

also head over to https://www.bigislandmike.com and pick up some of Big Island Mike's BBQ sauce and grab one of his "NUT SACKS" if you dare!

Episode 380 : Season 12 : Sailing Australia

Hello Friends,
On this episode we make way from Moreton Bay and head North up to Double Island Point, catching a Jack Mackerel Tuna along the way. Once we are anchored @LoveGrubGalley cooks some of it up for dinner. (Make sure you check out Rhonda’s cooking channel)

The next day we prepared to Cross the Wide Bay Bar and make our way across in perfect conditions. We had heard many warnings about this bar but it is only dangerous if you try and cross it at a time when you shouldn't be crossing it. I would image this place gets super crazy during storms are large swells.

I found the following two YouTube channels to be very helpful when planning my trip up the East Coast of Australia : @MotorSailingforOldDudes and @CruisingEastCoastAus

Episode 377 : Season 12 : Sailing Australia

Hello Friends,
On this episode we continue to make our way up inside the ICW, From tipplers to Browns Bay and on to Peel Island. Dodging shoals and regularly seeing less than 2ft under our keel in places even at high tide, we finally made it out into the deeper water of Moreton Bay and were not longer controlled by the tides.

I have also included a little clip of a snorkel adventure where we explored a shipwreck at Peel Island.

Episode #185 - Let There Be Water

Hello Friends,

On this episode we show you some of the work and process that went into building our integral water tank into the unused bilge space below our cabin sole. This was a massive project that took a very long time so this video only covers the basics of the process.

We used MAX CLR FDA approved Epoxy Resin - https://theepoxyexperts.com/ep....oxy-resin-food-safe-

The new water tank ended up holding 35 gallons. When combined with our separate forward tank/water bladder we have a total capacity of 65 gallons. Once we can afford a water maker we will do away with the forward water tank but until then it is nice to have the option of extra capacity.

I am very glad this project is completed and happy with the outcome.
