These are our opinions on how we believe warranty rectification costs should be split between the yacht broker and boat builder in a world where financial cost seems to outprioritise human impact. Some sections apply specifically to the situation surrounding our Leopard 45 Catamaran and experience with Leopard Catamarans, Robertson & Caine and Travelopia. This may also apply to other production boat builders such as Lagoon, Seawind, Bavaria, Beneteau and Fountaine Pajot.

We've been offline for a little while so here's a briefly edited update explaining what we've been up to.
In short, we've just arrived at Power Boats shipyard in Trinidad after sailing across the Atlantic Ocean 😃 ZSpars helped get us here on time with a quick rigging repair at the last minute in Gibraltar and since then we've been busy sailing, hauling out and organising to do some of the outstanding warranty repairs on our Leopard 45. We'll go into more detail soon ⛵

During the handover test sail, Trent and Tynan noticed water sloshing around in the engine bay of our new yacht and the bilge light going on and off.
Details include the warranty dynamic with Yanmar's representatives, Leopard and boat builders. 4JH45 engines and the install by Robertson and Caine factory on Leopard Catamarans. New owners should be aware of causes, implications to warranty, who is at fault and why.
This is just one of many events that used up the boys time in Cape Town. Warranty issues like this and having them resolved prevented them from enjoying touring South Africa during their seven months, whether it be the Leopard factory or a safari tour they never got to go on.

This video will be of specific interest to owners of Leopard Catamarans that are still under warranty. It will also be of interest to people considering which catamaran to buy and from which broker.
While credit is due for the assistance given, potential buyers need to ask themselves some important questions like are they fixing certain issues on the production line and how would you know?
Would they offer you this level of support if you didn't have an online presence?
Which other equivalent yacht builders would do any better? At the very least our broker and builder has stood behind their brand and stepped up to repair the hull themselves showing some pride.
Why is it so hard to find examples of the myriad of personal contracts from Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Seawind, Neel, Nautitech, Catana, Balance, Excess, Privilege and Bali etc?
Lastly and most importantly why don't all brokers readily make available the purchase contracts and warranty terms and conditions as Leopard Catamarans does, like an insurance company is required to publish its PDS?

While our Leopard 45 catamaran is on the hardstand undergoing warranty repairs the deck flex above our aft cabins has been addressed! JS Marine, the contractors sent by Travelopia / Leopard Catamarans to complete the extensive warranty repairs took care of the starboard side with Tynan assisting, while the port side was taken care of by our crew over the course of 3 days. Jokes were cracked, Telicia learned to fiberglass and we moved one step closer to be able to get relaunch and finally reach our end goal - sailing and exploring some of the most remote areas of our planet.

Something you may not know is that many engines in a series, for example the Yanmar 4JH45 and Yanmar 4JH57, are actually the same block with different tuning maps. With the right technology it's possible to tune some of these engines to gain performance with no negative impact on the motor.
While in Michigan last year Telicia sat down with Sherie, the site manager for STEINBAUER USA, to discuss what sets the STEINBAUER PowerModules apart from other tuning technologies, how the tuning technology follows the same principals as OEM manufacturer and the warranty implications of installing a module on a marine diesel engine,especially for US consumers. They also briefly cover the reliability of STEINBAUER products and the warranty support offered by the company.

DAY 457 ON THE HARDSTAND IN TRINIDAD
Today marks a very important day. It is the day that despite hardships sometimes bordering on insanity and near constant adversity we have come out on top.Thank you for the support of individuals who offered us a helping hand after watching our struggles from afar and people's attempts to break us. We thank everyone who had stood by us on the side of doing what is right and the rare few who have strong integrity and the spine to actually follow that through with action, sometimes at their own risk. Today the tide turns and with clear hearts and conscience we move forward together, people best do what's right or get out of the way.
Leaving his family, job security and country behind, the hero has flown across the world to help finish the ongoing warranty repairs on our sailing home, getting our Leopard Catamaran into the condition she needs to be in for us to relaunch and finally begin living the dream we set out to achieve almost 3 years ago.
In this video he assesses and repairs damage and defects on the hulls, focusing largely on the bows. Along with ensuring gel coat is properly repaired, he also got it ready to reinstate our sailboats artwork, which we are very excited to see.

When buying a yacht the last thing you want to be fixing is this!
While we've been on the hardstand our toilet tanks are out of action, giving time for issues found a while ago on the port side to be fixed as part of the ongoing warranty repairs of our Leopard 45 catamaran. But since the boat builder is nothing if not consistent, we found more leaks than expected, spanning across both of the boat septic systems. Since the tanks had never been pressure and leak tested before, we had no idea just how far the issues with our new boat went in this area.
Just over 65 hours were spent rebuilding our black water tanks and rerunning pipes to fix issues that were causing toilet water (and smells!) to leak out of the tanks. Who did the repairs and were they paid you might ask? Have a watch and leave your thoughts in the comments!

How to tap test your own new Leopard Catamaran.
This time featuring a 2021 Leopard 45 and a 2023 Leopard 45.
Since releasing the first tap testing video, these hulls been opened up like a page out of Incredible Cross Sections revealing more dry glass. We've learned about the different noises our hull makes when we beat it with a hammer and have decided to share this wonderful catalogue of sounds with other Leopard yacht owners at Christmas.
If you have a Leopard Catamaran the sounds you hear may be able to help you identify issues with your hull. These may be covered under the Robertson & Caine hull warranty policy so check your contract. It's also may be useful to owners of other yachts such as Lagoons and Fountain Pajot, as well as monohulls, just to give you a basic idea of what sounds you might here.

This is the first interview we have done since uploading our "Leopard 45 review series"
We have had multiple owners contact us and request to submit information or sit down for an interview to share their story, since we began to publicly discuss the issues with our hull and the warranty process in general.
While in Croatia Telicia recently interviewed Herbert aboard his 2021 Leopard 45. Among the topics discussed were some of the issues he’s experienced on his hull, his thoughts on the Leopard 45 catamaran design and prolonged warranty process and opinions on some of the poor workmanship discovered aboard both new yachts.
It is our opinion that owners coming together is the only way that the warranty system will be reviewed and improved. If quality control and the warranty process is improved it will increase the value of everyone's asset. We believe that is it incredibly naive and short sighted to think that covering up issues will be in anyone's best interest, now or in future.

Much has happened since we last posted! We are in communication with management from Leopard Catamarans and Robertson & Caine, representatives from both have flown out to the boat, the crossbeam was removed as part of the hull inspections and some talented guys from Leopard and JS Marine have flown in to work on the hull with us.
This video continues to give you an insight into what can go right and wrong with new boat ownership. We will be sharing some of the positive developments that have been happening behind the scenes and some of what still needs to be done to launch and continue the adventure.
This video also begins to detail how Travelopia/Leopard catamarans are evolving the speed, care and attention that they give to warranty issues and the still fluid nature of our situation working with them. Trent still has a lot of respect for various R&C and Travelopia staff and is spending a lot of his time and energy trying to steer the situation towards an overall positive outcome for all.
Trent wanted it noted that Leopard/Travelopia choosing to stand with the customer even if at this late stage and by their brand deserves recognition and respect despite the hardship caused unnecessarily in the past by certain staff members and processes.
The non disclosure agreement Trent mentioned was sent to AJ and Tad on SV Helms Deep when they attempted to get a copy of the warranty conditions for issues on their new NEEL 47 Trimaran.
AJ and Tad refused to sign the NDA and have shared it online as part of a series detailing their experience as new owners of a yacht manufactured by NEEL Trimarans. They are new to Youtube so it would be good if the cruising community could show them some support for being brave enough to speak out.

When Trent ordered our Leopard 45 catamaran we were excited to be buying a yacht with a design that we loved. It was reassuring to hear at point of sale that ongoing construction issues had apparently been resolved. Trent said that he consciously chose to buy a yacht with high hull number thinking that it would reduce issues.
As promised, the outcome of our post Cape Town warranty experience with Robertson and Caine. What's left now is to see how Leopard evolves as a business and responds to cruisers to help them achieve the dream they worked hard and set out for. Robertson and Caine with their upcoming sale also seem to have a fresh opportunity to clean house and train staff to be better equipped to offer a more empathetic response to live aboard issues.

Since buying our Leopard 45 in June of 2021 we've had ongoing issues with the mast, the most serious of which started with the sounds of the conduit slapping and breaking inside the mast as the yacht sailed across the Atlantic Ocean.
In this video we cover a range of mast related topics including why our Raymarine wind sensor failed, what we found inside the mast after pieces of conduit fell out when it was removed in Italy, some of the issues we've had with the construction of our Z-Spars mast, the Code 0 setup on the Leopard Catamarans option list, and what it's been like for us to try and have warranty issues addressed since leaving South Africa and going on the hardstand in Europe.
