We Removed TWO Detroit Diesels 12V71s by OURSELVES
It's the end of an era onboard Tangaroa. In this episode, we finally remove both Detroit Diesel 12V71 engines from our 78' aluminum yacht as we move forward with our full engine repower. Each engine weighs over 5,000 pounds-and we tackled the job ourselves. The process wasn't simple. First, we had to remove two massive, asbestos-covered mufflers-one of which was sitting right on top of Stella, blocking the hatch. Once we had the space cleared, we lifted Stella out first, then shifted Portia across the engine room to get her into position for removal. Our DIY gantry system was put to the test, and we weren't sure if everything would fit through the old hatches-but we made it happen.
