Sailing boat ESCORTED through shallows to avoid yacht grounding. Anxious moments!
Ep 3: Communications failure agitates the skipper. Avoiding a run aground is high on the list, depth gauge drops toward zero, first mate gets anxious, "I don't want to see any more mud"! Professionals help Options stay safe. We're on our way now from Yorkshire to the Med, via London. First we must travel southwards along the (often treacherous) east coast of England negotiating "The Wash", the strong currents, the shifting shallows and widespread windfarms of the North Sea. Wells-next-the-Sea is an old harbour tucked away down a tidal, narrow channel which dries out at low water and can only be accessed when the tide is right. Acknowledgements and links: Wells Harbour Master and team: https://www.portofwells.co.uk/ These people are professional and caring in their guidance and care for mariners. Make sure you check their information board before trying to get there by sea. Huge thanks to them. Fishing boat Gabriella: No link but a huge THANKS for leading us through safely and communicating well - I'm sure you'll be doing it again for others. National Coastwatch: https://nci.org.uk/wellsnextthesea A national and unique volunteer organisation serving the public and mariners along our coastline and keeping the beach lovers safe. Wells-next-the-Sea: https://wellsguide.com/ The people living and working in Wells are welcoming, helpful and polite. Thank you Wells - great fish and chips - great seafood! Flood Control: https://floodcontrolinternational.com/case-studies/wells-next-sea/ These folks installed the flood barrier system to augment attempts to keep the town dry and safe. Flood defences are becoming increasingly important in protecting people and their businesses as climatic conditions continue to change. The heights of the tides around the UK vary dramatically, as they do in other parts or our world. We should strive to protect and live with our planet, not just exist upon it's surface.
