Crossing the Atlantic via Cape Verde is notorious for heavy seas and strong winds, which can work out to be an advantage. With the second leg of 2000nm to come later this section is a good shakedown for the boat and crew, with any weaknesses showing up and being fixable in Cape Verde. Our first breakdown came progressively and could have been a game changer had we not had the spares available and the knowledge to fix the issue. The auto pilot failed a few days in at the same time the halyard on the Gennaker chafed through and snapped, leaving the whole sail floating in the Atlantic Ocean. Could we retrieve it?? Fishing in this vast ocean can be very fruitful, and the words" FISH ON" became a regular cry from the stern.
