Tuamotu atolls are basically big rings of coral with lovely lagoons inside, they offer amazing protection for both yachts and sea-life, the tricky part is you have to enter and exit through tiny passes or breaks in the coral ring. Water rushes in and out of these passes often at huge speeds causing breaking waves, hence you must time your arrival or leaving time with a slack tide and even then it can be crazy scary! The atoll of Rangiroa was by far the most hair raising of all the passes we did, it pretty much always has breaking waves, but the other thing it always has is dolphins playing in those waves! We had so much fun watching them, snorkeling through the passes and inside the lagoon at the famous 'aquarium', its' shallow, full of coral and fish and literally like going snorkeling in an aquarium. Rangiroa also had quite a few nice restaurants and resorts being one of the more populated Tuamotus. We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! We would love to hear from you. Especially if you are interested in doing something crazy like we are! Maybe we can help answer some questions you have? Thanks and enjoy.
