Welcome to Part 3 of our sails on the Bay of Biscay! In this episode, we finally find the weather-window we have been waiting for and decide to take our chances to cross over the Bay from Ile d'Yeu to Gijon, Spain. Although it was not the entire bay, this was still big for us. We could finally sail directly to Spain!! On the Bay of Biscay, you can never quite know what to expect. But, according to our calculations, we were prepared for a 2-3 day sail?( 48hr sail from morning to morning.) We started off with big waves & strong westerly winds, (but what can you expect on the Bay of Biscay.) The wind died down considerably, slowly but surely towards the evening. That's when the dolphins came out to play ? It tapered to no winds for about 17hrs, forcing us to motor-sail and lose a lot of time. Do you hear that?...Exactly - no more noisy, smelly motor - just the wind & the waves! We hoisted up the sails as soon as the wind allowed. (It's always sooo good to turn that noisy motor off!) By the end of our trip, The winds picked up, slowly but surely, ending in strong easterly winds. This forced us to tuck in the main sail to the 3rd reef in order to slow down so we wouldn't arrive before sunrise. The calm period helped us tackle the rough sailing we endured in the beginning and at the end of the sail. But, the passage was remarkably doable to be sailing over the Bay of Biscay towards the end of November! The only thing haunting us were the reports of killer whales patrolling the Spanish waters near to the ports we needed to stop at! Scary! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CREDITS: MOVAVI SUITE 24: Another New Day Clear Blue Skies 2 EPIDEMIC SOUND: Remove the Complexities - Peter Sandberg Flowers in the Mirror - Sayuri Hayashi Egnell Guarded Skies - Edgar Hopp
