DIY Sailing Racing Computer for under $150 - Part Two
Sailing - Low Cost DIY Racing Computer. This is an update on the previous videos showing an embedded DIY racing computer. As you all know, costs have skyrocketed and we may be looking at trying to stay under $200 after this is all done LOL!. I worked on a lot of the project details with the China vendor that makes the GPS and Bluetooth modules. Note that they make the GPS modules for high-end drone manufacturers so the quality is top-notch. I asked them for the NRE to make a Bluetooth and GPS system on a board so that I could develop an app to connect to the system. The NRE is about $5K USD so that is on hold for right now. So to keep the project moving I am working on a Flutter/Dart app and this video shows the prototype. The app will be able to use either GPS L1/L5 of the future BLE and GPS module. Note that most of the new iPhones and Android phones at the high end are waterproof. Let me know your thoughts and as soon as the season starts again in April I will start testing. Class legal? NO but . . . I am looking into if I can force the phone to be in magnetic compass mode ONLY and turn off the GPS for the class rules. Will they accept this? Time will tell but eventually, this is going to come up. Time Line: 00:00 to 00:37 intro 00:37 to 01:14 GPS L1 and L5 on Smartphones 01:14 to 01:32 Flutter and Dart for cross-platform app development 01:32 to 01:50 Prototype of the app - start mode pin and RC setup for the line 01:50 to 02:08 Prototype of the app = start mode with time and distance to line information 02:08 to 02:27 Prototype of the app = race mode with the heading, heel angle, and speed 02:27 to 02:45 Prototype of the settings screen 02:45 to 03:31 FUTURE - adding the GPS RTK with the BLE module to allow the GPS system to be located with a clear line of sight and improve performance.
