Welcome back to sailing NV, where this week we share with you the chaos of refitting our Open 66 in a boat yard remote north borneo and tackle some major jobs on the rudder, bearing, engine, gearbox and keel in only 3 weeks! It had been a super productive nearly 3 weeks in which Timo had fixed the bearing, extended the rudder beautifully, swapped our broken gearbox for the 2nd hand one we'd bought, fixed some leaks on the engine and worked on smoothing out the shape of the bulb on the end of our keel. All that was left was to put some finishing touches to the bulb, primer and paint along with antifouling the rest of the boat. But unfortunately the smooth ride we'd had up until now was about to change. Due to our 4.5metre keel, we'd arranged for the yard to dig us a pit to put our keel in, as there were no props tall enough to support us that high above the ground. But unfortunately despite our best efforts to give the yard as detailed a plan as possible for how best to sit the boat, we struggled to communicated with the yard manager effectively and they dug the pit a lot deeper than we'd requested. This lead to 2 major issues for us. The first was that the pit filled with water, making it initially very difficult to work on the bulb, Timo spent hours shovelling gravel and rigging up pumps to try to get the pit dry enough to work in. Up until now we'd had relatively good weather but every time it rained he had to repeat the process. The other issue was that it made it impossible to support the keel as we'd requested multiple times. In the end with the communication issues and the difficulty in particular with dealing with the yard manager, famous for being grumpy and uncooperative, we felt we had no choice but to hope the boat would be OK like this as we thought the boat would be strong enough to support this seating arrangement for a few weeks? unfortunately we were wrong and we got a bit nasty surprise? This new damaged, coupled with about a weeks worth of rain on the forecast left us in pretty miserable situation? 00:00 - Intro 00:48 - The work starts 01:59 - Removing the propeller 02:57 - Removing the engine 03:56 - Removing the sail drive 07:24 - Fixing bearing 08:41 - Extending the rudder 11:36 - Prepare the new sail drive 19:07 - Installing the new sail drive 20:56 - Putting engine back 22:54 - Work on keel 23:23 - Summary 23:57 - Nasty surprise 27:27 - Merry Christmas If you want to know more feel free to get in contact with us (at sailingnv@gmail.com) or directly with marine propeller https://www.marinepropeller.it/en/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you'd like to support us on Patreon, our website https://www.patreon.com/SailingNV or with a one-off donation via https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv or paypal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sailingnv or if you'd like to help us buy something we need, you can check out our amazon wish list https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1G2NJ0EGJLKR0?ref_=wl_share THANK YOU!!!
