185: TERRIFIED TO NAVIGATE THIS CUT - Is the BAD REPUTATION overblown?
We didn't get much sleep thinking about navigating Current Cut in the morning. What a Christmas morning for us! UGH. If you don't time the cut correctly, you can face upwards of 10 kts of current and it's essential to make a 270 degree turn with the boat before proceeding forward through a very narrow channel along a wall of rocks. It was unnerving to say the least...to think through it. Once we were underway, it turned out to be a big nothing burger. But, we would rather be over-prepared and pleasantly surprised than ill prepared. It was a huge relief to get through the cut and head to Tranquility Bay and our much awaited and anticipated visit with our friends, Brett and Fiona. We had been talking about visiting for over a year and were supposed to be with them for Thanksgiving, but we were stuck in the Abacos. We finally made it to Tbay on Christmas Day and what a Christmas welcome it was! Brett and Fiona are the consummate hosts. They cooked up a feast for us every day. It was truly amazing. We were able to see their property and the plans for the new hotel and private homes. It's going to be beautiful. And, we even caught a crab, which Brett turned into a beautiful risotto. It was hard to leave them after just 3 days, but we had to get south as the days were ticking by and we were only a week out from welcoming, Marston, Brown's daughter to the Bahamas. She would be our first family visitor so we couldn't be late to get her! We had an easy afternoon sail down to Tarpum Bay where we staged for the crossing of the Exuma Sound. Tarpum Bay is a small, sleepy little town, but a perfect place to stop for the night. #sailing #bahamas #currentcut #eleuthera #tarpumbay NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too!
