Late summer in Mindelo Cape Verde filled with good times all around. All kinds of parties, raves and events, and it seems Covid is a thing of the past. As well the weather is warm and kind, the best time to take friends out sailing in the Sao Vicent Canal. Yes, I'm handicapped, but the adventure continues. It's back to good times and glorious sailing in Cape Verde Africa. Sailing Galopin in Cabo Verde Africa. #sailing #caboverde #africa Some say it’s The Best Sailing Channel on YouTube! One of the things on our do to list during this refit was to check our engine, which is over 20 years old, to see if any parts need replacing. We want to make sure that when we set sail again, we can rely on this engine in the future when we are potentially in more remote places and it’s harder to access parts. Since we wanted sand blast, primer and paint the engine anyway to prevent any further corrosion, it made sense to remove the engine from the boat. This would also enable us to access the sail drive to replace the seals, since we were already aware it had an oil leak. We expected there to be some other small issues, such as a leak from the water pump, but we weren't prepared for what we were about to find. Our engine is a Volvo (MD2040) 40hp, and like with most race boats we assume it would have been mostly just used for power. In particular we can see that the engine was used with a belt drive pump to move the 4 tonnes of water between the ballast tanks. Up till now we haven't used the engine much, mostly just for hoisting the anchor and docking the boat. It never felt super powerful but we assumed that's because it's a relatively small engine for the size of the boat. However in this video we find out the real reason, which was a bit of a shock... also to our bank balance. So in this video we will show you what is involved in removing an engine from a boat, and the things to look out for as well as our distressing discovery. For this job we were lucky enough to have help from Brett (who you might recognise from Expedition Drenched), Armani (who you've probably seen in some of our previous videos) as well as Ritesh - our favourite mechanic! Ritesh has become kind of famous amongst the yachties here in Fiji for being the most knowledgable, professional and trustworthy marine engine mechanic around. His vast experience means he’s super efficient at finding the right solution. If you’re looking for help with your engine in fiji, we 100% recommend him: KRISHNA YACHT SERVICES, +679 844 0860, REPAIR, MAINTENANCE & SERVICING ALL INBOARD & OUTBOARD MOTORS With Ritesh's help we compression test the engine in this video, to test the pressure in the cylinders. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Consider supporting us on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/sailingnv If you don't like Patreon but would like to chip in for a coffee, beer, sand paper or epoxy click here https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Caio! He raced her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), coming 5th and becoming the first non-frenchman to finish the race. We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! If you want to see what FMC global sat are all about, who have supplied us with our starlink around the world, just go to their website: https://fmcglobalsat.com In this episode we sail from Papua New Guinea to Indonesia, via the Ninigo islands, where we happen to arrive on the biggest day of the year! A wooden sailing canoe regatta, where the winner gets 10,000 Kina, which is around $2500 USD. Therefore the locals obviously take this race very seriously, as this kind of money goes a very long way around here! SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. We found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing across the Pacific Ocean!! The Gemini Legacy 35 Catamaran is an affordable yacht to charter, with the fast sailing performance of a mono-hull. In addition to the sailing performance, the Gemini Catamaran is priced similar to charter monohulls such as the Jeanneau or Bavaria in the 38ft range making it a very obtainable catamaran to charter.

The bush in our brand new prop stripped - with only 18 hours on it! When will this stop?! It feels like everything that can go wrong, is going wrong these days. A few days before leaving Langebaan to move to Saldanha Bay we were testing our engines, Chris picked up that the engine on the starboard side was loosing power as we pushed it to 2000rpm, it could have been 1 of three things: 1. A plastic bag or something else was wrapped around the prop 2. There was something wrong with the engines gear box 3. The bushes in the prop were slipping. 🤦🏼‍♀️😖 After checking for a plastic bag and ruling that out, Colben scratched a line across the cone and the propeller, Chris pushed the revs up again, Colben got back into the water to see if the lines had moved, they had. This meant that the bushes inside the props were slipping when the revs were pushed up too high. Definitely a better outcome than had it been a gearbox issue. We got brand-new props when we bought Saoirse. She initially had feathering props on and we got a set of fix props in the sale but we decided to go for the solid props instead and keep the feathering props as back up. We’ve done about 18 hours on the engines and in this time it seems it has worn the bush down inside the prop. We have been told that sometimes the props just come that way, highly unusual but it seems the universe felt we needed to be tested again. Because the props we bought over five years ago by the yachts previous owner, we didn’t have any guarantee or warranty on them to go back on. Chris Boock took that propeller back to Cape Town to have one of his guys look at what was wrong with it. We were happy to find out that they confirmed the bush theory, this was a less costly fix if compared to having to buy a new prop of comparable quality or have it be a gearbox issue. An engineering firm in Muizenberg replaced the bush and we were able to put the propeller back on. We then started sea trials! After getting the prop back we went out to sea for the first time! We were super excited to finally take Saoirse out! We had Chris and Tony Boock with us for Saoirse’s first trip out of the lagoon into the open ocean. We had a challenging 3m+ swell coming through when Chris decided we needed to do a man-over-board drill, it was quite successful for our first attempt at this on Saoirse and it was awesome knowing that Saoirse had seen open ocean for the first time in 12 years after he big mishap back in 2008. With the bumpy trip, poor Cleo did not fair well at all. She’s become accustomed to sailing in the lagoon at this stage but the ocean is quite different. She spent a good few hours laying as flat as possible across the saloon seat or snuggled in Denver’s arms dry retching🤮 but happily, as always, as soon as we got into calm waters again, she quickly felt herself again. Sailing around the world on our Lagoon 440 Catamaran, we stopped off for a few months at the island of Raiatea in French Polynesia (the Society Islands) and one of our 'visiting spots' was the little motu known as TAHUNAOE. Ana would take the canoe whilst I took the dinghy ... I loved dodging coral heads at speed over the reef on the way there ... after all ... this is our car and a man needs to 'let his hair down now and then' :)

Music by Kogane (https://soundcloud.com/kokogane) Really appreciate the support, check out the Patreon for more access and perks: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon If Patreon isn't your thing, I also have a Paypal.me link: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon I've also created an Amazon Wish List if you'd like to purchase specific items I'll need as the build continues: http://a.co/dx7F4dz I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel to world. I make travel vlogs sharing my ups and downs, adventures on motorbikes, sailboats, and vans. Instagram: @Finding_Simon Snapchat: Finding_Simon Twitter: @FindingSimon Donations: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon Merchandise: http://simonstiles.com/finding-simon/ :::::::FAQ::::::: - How do you afford to travel constantly? A: I travel really cheap, free camping, cooking my own meals, being as efficient as possible. I make my income almost entirely on YouTube but it's really tight. Ad revenue, patreon, paypal donations, merchandise sales and affiliate links bring in about as much as a part time minimum wage job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough I go back to work, doing photography mostly, sometimes commercial video projects, but it takes me away from my travels and videos. - How much does it cost? I spend on average $2000 travelling, most of which is gas, some repairs, food, and on average less than $200 on any eating out, shopping or extra curricular expenditures. I make $200 a month from YouTube and $400 from Patreon. The rest I make from my work. - What camera do you use? Sony A7ii, DJI Mavic Pro, Rode Videomic with Deadcat, Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, DIY tripods and lights. - What is your bike? 1999 Yamaha Vstar XVS1100 with a Champion Escort sidecar. - What kind of boat is that? It's a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 - What're your plans? Fix it up, run nothing but green power, sail off into the sunset. - How do you find all these cool places? To gain access to my complete research you need to hit me up on Patreon, but here's a few sites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/ https://www.campendium.com/ http://www.atlasobscura.com/ https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - What do you do for Internet? I use coffeeshops and libraries to upload episodes a few at a time, I also use my wifi antenna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T9lNM8Mukk&t=2s) and a data package on my phone (10GB) - How do you live on the road with a dog? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with my dog anyways, especially if it's warm out in the middle of the day. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make some decisions, avoiding places that ban dogs, and spending more time out in nature instead of in the cities. - What happened to the girl? We decided to go separate ways (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPgxDIXxCjY&t=4s) - Are you rich or something? definitely not. I've spent some quality time homeless, I've struggled financially most of my life, and although I'm blessed with great friends and family as well as being able bodied white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to travel the world. You need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, time with family, and often your career but it is possible. - Why don't you have 10x more subscribers? My channel isn't that old, many of the bigger channels you can compare mine to started putting out videos a couple years before I began. I could always use your help sharing my videos, spreading the word, and connecting with cross promotional opportunities. Editing and travelling tend to take up all my time. - Where are you now? The top perk on my Patreon page is a live link of my location on google maps so you can get an active idea of where I am currently. If that's not an option for you there's also Instagram and Instagram stories that give you a much better idea of what I'm up to today.
