Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. Time to leave the Bahamas for an intense 3 days sail without engine up the Gulf Stream back to the US. Trying to time a weather window was a challenge in itself but eventually one, although not the best, presented itself. Hurricane season was approaching and we really needed to get back to the United States to fix our engine which stopped working at the end of January and it was now the end of April 2020. The first step of leaving New Providence Island was all smooth sailing, good supper underway and beautiful sunset over Andros Island. This quickly turned into a very sporty sail as we approached the narrow section of the Northwest channel. Also a little friend paid us a surprise visit at night. One last weather update as we neared Bimini and we were off for a crazy fast sail in the Gulf Stream with a surprise. Time to mount an extra 300W of solar panels on the sailboat. And this time we don't make the mistake of buying semi-flexible panels we go with rigid solar panels to be fully sufficient once in the Bahamas. We also enjoy land life in Jacksonville with Alex's siblings. It was odd sleeping in a bed which didn't move. And I found the biggest lemons ever. We become locals and go at Hanna Park with my sisters Julie and Chantal, enjoy some drinks at the Hoptinger rooftop bar in Riverside where my niece Melissa joins us. We even get a delicious seafood meal with the whole family and brother in laws Sean and Jeff. The land life adventures continue in St. Augustine where we check out the stunning architecture of Flagler College, we drink a few margaritas before devouring tasty pizza slices at Pizza Time and enjoy the Christmas lights. We chose to install Victron Orion DC to DC chargers on our engines to utilize all extra power from the alternators. Finishing the DIY Lithium battery install on our 1996 Fountaine Pajot Venezia 42 Sailing Catamaran! We move the engine start batteries to the engine compartments and install the Victron Orion 12-12-30 smart charger to take extra power generated by the alternators and charge the lithium batteries. Moving up from our Catalina 42 Mk 1 called Cakewalk we now feature the sailboat Isabella, a Super Mikado 56 made by the French shipyard CNSO. Sailing, partying, dancing, cooking, and sometimes pushing the limits. This sailboat had been neglected for some time when she was purchased. Lots of cleaning, sanding, refinishing, new lines, refrigerator, pumps, water heater parts, whole boat water filters, bow thruster, lighting, fuel filters, instruments, air conditioning, etc.... Some of the fun with refitting a sailboat is to be able to do economical but quality improvements. Elbow grease saves a lot of money, watching for sales, knowing when substitutions can be made that will last, and of course enjoying the final product. We previously were on a Catalina 42 Mk 1 called Cakewalk. We sail, fish (haha), dance, fly the drone, sometimes wear bikinis, DIY, ride the motorcycle, listen to great music, and enjoy life.
