We flew directly from Europe to Norfolk to ready While One for Season 2. We learned a lot from last year and spent the better part of July and these handful of days prior to heading south, provisioning and doing maintenance on While One. In this Episode is a How To change the engine and transmission oil on a Honda, 15 H.P. engine. There is also a How To on ascending the mast to fix a problem while trying to raise our headsail. It's a lot of hard work. We also successfully completed sailing around Cape Hatteras for the first time as a couple, without the assistance of a captain and his first mate. This trip was cause for much deliberation. We constantly watched our forecast models on PredictWind, read Chris Parker's forecasts and the National Hurricane Center and made our own interpretations. Our current insurance policy requires us not to navigate south of Cape Hatteras from July thru October. The weather was shaping up for a perfect rounding...but doing so would result in us being south of Hatteras before November. We reached out to the insurance agent on Thursday, requesting permission...it took them practically a week to give us a written endorsement and by that time, we had already made the trip. Suffice it to say, it was a good decision. More progress towards carbon-fibre stanchions with fully sealed decks. Today we were using the router to round off the top edges of the FR4 stanchion bases. These will be epoxied onto the existing triangles that the the original stanchions were bolted to. A 26mm carbon-fibre tube will go through this FR4 and all the way through the deck into a hole filled with thickened epoxy. The stanchion tube will slide onto it. It is quite a surreal sight: the park's landscape is dominated by barren, windswept islands with rocky cliffs and crystal-clear waters. The unique karst terrain, with its cracks, caves, and grottoes, creates a dramatic backdrop for sailing. The landscape is often referred to a lunar landscape. You need a permit to sail into the park with the islands. And 1 harbor offers a permit for 2 days including the harbor fee, so we went to that harbor, which was located in a beautiful spot in between 2 islands. We put our drone in the air and filmed the surroundings!

“Jabulo” is a 2002 Dean 440 catamaran, built by Dean Catamarans in Capetown, South Africa. She has been our full time live-aboard cruising home in French Polynesia for the past 3 years, however health concerns now mean we must change our lifestyle. In the pursuit of extreme seaworthiness, all Dean Catamarans feature very buoyant full bows with the bridge deck carried well forward and small trampoline area. They feature asymmetrical hulls, where the outside curvature is much greater than the inner hull curvature, resulting in a reduced wave forming action between the hulls (reduced venturi effect). This, coupled with a high bridge deck clearance dramatically reduces under bridge deck slamming, while also improving overall performance. Another feature of Dean Catamaran’s are the mast which is raked aft by 7 degrees. This unusual feature assists both the yachts upwind performance, and its ability to tack through the wind without the difficulties associated with some other catamarans. We have loved “Jabulo” for many things. Firstly the Dean 440 sets a perfect mix of space, comfort and performance. We will sail rings around a ‘condo-cat’, yet still be comfortable and controllable enough to enjoy doing it. Secondly, the boat is galley-down which gives so much more comfort and usable space than the charter oriented galley-up The boat has been imported into French Polynesia and so can remain here forever, for short holiday stays or long term cruising in the best cruising area in the world.
