We had the pleasure of interviewing ocean racer Tracy Edwards in anticipation of a fantastic new sailing documentary called Maiden that tells the story of Tracy and her all-female crew racing around the world in the Whitbread Round the World Race back in the late 80s, early 90s. It’s an action-packed film that is as much about sailing as it is about the evolution of a society’s attitudes and mores towards women. The 2019 Rolex Fastnet Race has been won by David and Peter Askew’s 21.5 meter (70-foot) Maxi yacht Wizard. Finishing third on the water behind her larger rivals Rambler and SHK Scallywag, she is the first American yacht to win the race overall since Great News in 1989. Prevailing from an international fleet of 388 yachts is a remarkable achievement. The Rolex Fastnet Race is one of the world’s legendary and most challenging contests. Wizard’s crew can be rightly proud of their accomplishment and for fully embracing the characteristics required to succeed in discipline of offshore racing: preparedness, determination, endurance and skill. It was not an easy win. Conditions at the Fastnet Rock on the second day were some of the worst in recent years with strong wind and steep waves testing the commitment of the crews. Wizard’s position at the top of the podium was challenged hard, not least by French yacht Bretagne Telecom, which finished second overall, a mere 45 minutes behind and British yacht Tala, a further 45 minutes back. Hannah Diamond and Henry Bomby of Sun Fast 3300 Fastrak XII finished second in both IRC Three and IRC Two-Handed in the 2019 Rolex Fastnet Race. Hannah and Henry are at the start of an Olympic campaign, hoping to represent Great Britain at the 2024 Summer Olympics, which will have a new event, the Mixed Two Person Keelboat Offshore. #RolexFastnetRace

For the third time since 2013 Alexis Loison has won both class and IRC Two-Handed in the Rolex Fastnet Race, this time racing with the boat builder Jean-Pierre Kelbert on the brand new JPK 10.30 Léon. #RolexFastnetRace

With 87 starters, IRC Four is the largest class racing in the 2019 Rolex Fastnet Race. The vast majority of the sailors are passionate amateurs fulfilling their dream of racing in the Rolex Fastnet Race. After much planning we finally complete the passage through the notoriously tricky Devil's Backbone reef and arrive at a beautiful secluded beach north of Harbour Island, Eleuthera. We are being extra cautious as we opted to tackle the reef without the aid of a pilot, using our charts in conjunction with our eyes to "read" the color of the water in order to differentiate between reef and deep water. We were not yet done with the Pacific Ocean and therefor we decided to change our course towards Wallis, followed by the northern route - Tuvalu, Kiribati, Marshall Islands and finally Federated states of Micronesia.. But that’s for later episodes. :) It was already November and it was the beginning of the off-season in Wallis, but we had no choice. We had to cross the ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence Zone) and even though we had bad weather we loved the place and the people at the island. Once we fixed that and headed offshore our buddy boat's chain plate ripped through the deck and he had to drop sail! Not the best start to the next week of sailing the North shore of the Dominican Republic... BUT-we did also see an amazingly playful pod of dolphins that came out just in time with the sunshine!. & thankfully we continued sailing across smooth seas the whole way across the Mona Passage. We also caught a fish, finally! Alls well that ends well, and let's just say there was a very happy ending waiting for us in Puerto Rico! We're still in the town of Waterford Ireland and get off the boat to do a little exploring....learn a little about the Viking history, and even take a walk-through of The Waterford House of Glass. Then it's time to get moving again...about 1/3rd up the coast of the Irish Sea to get there. Leaving from Waterford though takes a few steps. We leave with high tide to have it as our backs as we travel down river, and once we get to the harbor entrance we need to wait until it cycles through again. Just when we thought this was looking a benefit race for the bigger boats, last night’s arrivals and previous leaders of IRC One - Tonnerre de Glen and Ino XXX - have been upstaged by two smaller rivals - L’Ange de Milon and Lann Ael 2 - who moored up in Plymouth around midday today. Jacques Pelletier, owner of L'Ange de Milon, has been trying for the division victory for a long, long time: “This is the first time I have had the chance to win this race. The first time I sailed in the Fastnet was in 1973 with a small boat. We completed the course in six days and six hours, something like that. This year we raced here in less than three days, it's absolutely marvellous.” #RolexFastnetRace
