Today we are evaluating two different types of dinghies, a rigid bottom inflatable from Caribe as well as a West Marine 9' hard dinghy. The difference is huge between the boats. Our concerns are not only which style is right for us, but also the ease of carrying it aboard and deploying it.

This leg of our journey begins in Cadiz, home of the Spanish navy and American naval bases. We one of the greatest sails to date through the Straits of Gibraltar at 8 knots on headsail alone. Africa on one side Europe on the other, sunshine and good wind, it doesn't get any better. Gibraltar is a real surprise it's an absolutely fascinating place. A tiny English territory in Spain, it's a bit surreal! The Rock of Gibraltar is quite a climb but really worth it. Caves Monkeys, Tunnels and amazing views. Gib has good cheap marinas and the best anchorage on this coast, well protected and close to the action. With the children leaving home we decided to sell our house in the UK and buy a boat in Holland. After two years refitting our Hans Christian 48T we have now set off a world voyage. We are retiring early because we want to attempt this voyage in good health and while we're fit and strong enough to really enjoy it. We will have to work a bit as we go until we can draw our pensions and we honestly don't know how well that will work. In our real lives we are journalists and filmmakers so it was only natural for use to document our travels by filming the journey. We aim to produce a professional standard vlog of the whole trip and try to give the viewer a real insight into what it's like to live and travel on a 48 foot sailboat. Our first aim is to sail South. After a winter getting iced in on the Markermeer in the Netherlands Judy insisted on warmer weather! So if you start from Episode 1 you will see us setting off from Eastbourne in the UK and travelling along the South Coast to Plymouth to enter a rally called ARC Portugal. Our first goal is to reach the Mediterranean and that means sailing across the infamous Bay of Biscay. This was a very good test for our boat as the bay lived up to it's fearsome reputation and split the whole fleet with a force 10 storm. Storm Miguel cut through our path and meant we had to run to mainland Spain to escape the massive seas and fearsome winds. Six boats couldn't make it in time and spent several very uncomfortable days at sea. The fleet had several broken boats, but thankfully no injured people. And this was just Episode 2! The excitement continued for the rest of our trip to the Med. Dolphins played in our bow wave, we sampled fantastic local foods and wines, great port in Porto! We found some beautiful anchorages and visit some wonderful historic places like Lisbon in Portugal, Cadiz in Spain and the fascinating port of Gibraltar. We will show you what it's like to winter in the Mediterranean, how much it all costs and give hints and tips on where to go how to save money with your boat and the places you stay. We are also talking to other sailors. After years of broadcasting journalism we know how to get peoples stories and we regularly film other sailors to show their boats and lifestyle as well as ours. We can always learn from others. Our long term plan is to spend a few years in the Mediterranean, on our list of place we want to visit are; Mallorca, Malta, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Italy, Tunisia, to name but a few! When we feel we've seen the best of what the Med has to offer we will cross the Atlantic to the Caribbean, on to the Pacific and beyond! #sailingfairisle

First stop, provisioning in the quaint and hospitable island of Vieques before cruising to the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge- and most notably the uninhabited island of Culebrita. Here one will find more hermit crabs, goats, and migratory birds than human civilization and the place is only accessible by private boat. There are free DPNR moorings in the beautiful bay where you can snorkel with the resident remoras or take a bath in the natural stone jacuzzis on the opposite end. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. Check out Finian Maynard and Maciek Rutkowski tackle the hardcore slalom conditions of the Fuerteventura Grand Slam. Maciek finished on a slalom career high in 6th and Finian showed tremendous speed to finish 8th.

Just a little. I have loved sailing lasers (fast dinghies, kinda) and used to sail my friend's 26 footer when I was single, and spent a week, once, cruising (with skipper) islands near Corfu. But, in fact, I must learn to sail and in particular sail Wahine! 2. How long will the crossing take? 2-3 months 3. When are you leaving? At the latest, May 2024. But, it could be a year or two earlier if all goes well in my training and the upgrades to the boat. 4. Are you Crazy? *This question comes in a variety of forms which have included, "Why not run a marathon?", "Do you have a death wish?", etc. I don`t think so ... 5. How big is your boat? 40 feet. A certified for Blue Water Gibsea 402 (1988). 6. What if your engine fails? I sail. Actually, I am thinking of converting from diesel to electric motor. Looking into that now. 7. Why solo? Hmmmmm ... good question ... just something compelling about being on my own in the middle of the ocean (Nemo North) contemplating the expanse above, the depths below, and inevitably the mysteries within. 8. Can you swim? Yep, but I hope I won't have to. 9. Will you fish? It would be silly not to have a hook and line in the water. But, to be honest, I do not expect to catch anything during the entire crossing! 10. What does Kande think? *Kande is my wife. and this is probably the most-asked question. Ask her! In this episode of our cruising life we show you how we switched Vela Nautica to Lithium power and integrated a lithium batterie in the ships energie system. This giant change is part of the extensive refit we spend our Vela Nautica to get her ready for more adventures. The change to Lithium power is an archievement that improved the comfort, living on this boat, for 100%. We choose the thorny way and did not use the overpriced "drop in" batteries, that are offered for boats. We build one huge batterie with 14.4 kWh controlled by an PowerBMS controller. This controller is accesible by WiFi and shows all batterie data and alarm systems.
