An iconic symbol of St. Croix and one of only three underwater trails in all North America. On the barrier reef side of the island, free dive the depths or snorkel the shallows with lemon sharks, giant barracudas, and tons of friendly angel fish! Over to the other half of the island you will find Turtle Beach, but be careful not to tread on the turf of the nesting leatherbacks, green, or hawksbill sea turtles! & don't eat the deadly green apples! A hike to the top for a 360 view of the island is a must, especially if you visit during humpback season. Season 4 | Episode 81 | Sailing off the anchor and diving on the prop near Catalina Island On this episode we haul up the anchor at Button Shell Beach so we can make our way to a new, hopefully friendlier, anchorage further North. While we were fighting to haul up the 80lbs of 3/8 chain and 35lb anchor in 70 ft of water our long painter line found its way into our propeller and "Prop'ed" us leaving us with no engine, an anchor that was half way up after a hard struggle very near to the rocks. We hoisted the sails and sailed away from land with the light breeze that was coming off the island and made our way to deeper water to finish hauling up the anchor. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. This week we head back to the boat after Alfie's injury and leave Sicily to try and make our way to the place we have been looking most foward to - THE GREEK ISLANDS! We struggle with our sailing journey as we become low on fuel and cannot find marinas with fuelling stations! We have found that the wind consistently disappears in the Mediterranean no matter what forecast is predicted. After 6 days of constant sailing (apart from when a thunderstorm came in at the heel of Italy) we finally make it to a beautiful Greek Island called Othonoi and it really is paradise. We let our hair down and enjoy the best day of our sailing journey so far. We realise that every day should be like that day but as we have made the mistake of booking too many people out to see us at various places so we have always been in a rush to get to the next destination. Our start battery dies, we have an ongoing leak in the stern gland that needs fixing AND we get our anchor tangled in the biggest mooring line and old rusty fisherman anchor bundle you have EVER seen! Abra os olhos! Pouco se vê o arquipélago quando a gente está navegando no meio do mar. Ao nos aproximarmos as belezas começam a se revelar. Eu sei que sou meio deslumbrada com a natureza, mas Abrolhos sempre foi um sonho. Desde quando eu trabalhava no Greenpeace e mobilizava pessoas para assinar o abaixo-assinado para criação de uma reserva ambiental para esse lugar. Sempre pensei: um dia eu chego lá. Não achei que seria assim, à vela. Sonhava com o dia em que mergulhasse com baleias. Mas Abrolhos acima da linha d'água foi uma surpresa maravilhosa! Fazer a volta caminhando pela Siriba e ver os pássaros nos admirando a menos de 1m de distância sem ter medo de seres humanos foi algo que me tocou profundamente. Infelizmente no vídeo não dá para descrever o que é essa sensação. Mas passamos dias admirando pássaros, formas e cores. Quando chegou o dia de visitar o Farol de Abrolhos (depois de 2 vezes desmarcando por estar muito disputado por turistas), tivemos o prazer de ter a ilha só pra nós! Subimos, conhecemos a cabritinha Lili (que eu quase levei embora pro Barba Negra) e fomos com o queridíssimo Sargento Brito fazer a visita guiada para a subida no Farol. Achei muito lindo, os faróis são românticos e misteriosos. E ter a oportunidade de acender esse em especial me fez sonhar com quantos navegantes eu estaria ajudando quando eles vissem o brilho daquela luz. Foi muito especial!
