The Fastnet is one of sailing’s most iconic and challenging races. This year’s edition attracted the biggest fleet to date as 388 yachts set sail on what would prove a record-breaking event as the battle for line honours went right down to the wire. Also in the Solent, the sport’s fastest fleet racing series made its European debut in equally dramatic style as SailGP broke both records and carbon out on the water. It’s been a busy few weeks in Japan as well as the 470s played out their world championships on the waters of Enoshima before all ten classes battled it out in the Olympic test event just a year out from the start of the Games. And the Olympic news doesn’t stop there, as World Sailing announced more details of an exciting new offshore class for the 2024 Games in Paris. We get you caught up to date with where we've been over the last year. We say goodbye to Gone with the Wind in the Florida Keys and travel to New Jersey to pick up our newest addition...Hercules. We travel across the US and back several times in an attempt to fill the cruising kitty before the 2019 sailing season. We are Shawn, Jessie, Mojo and Voodoo. We started our Youtube channel, Big Easy Sailing, to document our journey on our 1972 Gulfstar 36 sailboat. We've been together for 20 years and moved everywhere from our hometown of New Orleans to Alaska to Denver to Florida. Now our home will travel with us as we travel across beautiful blue waters. We anchored a mile from the smouldering remains of Anak Krakatoa. And one of us walked across the black sand to the lava flow of the recently decimated volcano. In December 2018 Anak Krakatau, after erupting for months, boomed out one last explosion before crashing beneath the waves. The resulting tsunami destroyed much of the coast of Java, killing over 1000 people. When we arrived a few months later, the caldera (now at sea-level) was still bubbling and smoking, spewing out pumice, lava and chemicals into the sea. Krakatoa, aka "Krakatau": 1. Krakatoa erupted in 1883 with the explosive force of 200 megatons of TNT. (nearly ten thousand times bigger than the bomb which devastated Hiroshima). 2. Shockwaves went round the planet 7 times, and it was heard as far away as Perth, Australia. 3. A cloud of gas and debris shot 15 miles into the air, blanking out the sun for three days. 4. A devastating tsunami, 120 feet high, destroyed neighbouring islands and coasts. 5. In 1927 Krakatoa woke up. A new cone appeared above sea level, grew into a small island, and was named Anak Krakatoa, or "Child of Krakatoa". It's not over yet. Don't forget to follow the boat! Our plans have changed a little for the better. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra where we are living the island life and chasing the surf before our big crossing! We departed Australia in July 2017 and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it!
