We're replacing our forestay, the wire that runs inside our Profurl furler, by ourselves. Luckily the old system uses Sta-lok fittings so it shouldn't be too difficult, or at least that's what we hope. With a little help from our boat neighbor Steve, we even manage to salvage the old cones to use for backups. We are a family preparing to sail around the world in our electric sailboat. With the announcement of the Western Australian borders opening, Magnus quickly booked a flight for the both of us to go over to Perth to catch up with family. We flew down to Brisbane for a couple of days to see our three daughters, then took a flight over to Perth which had been in lockdown for a long, long time. But, we aren't going to fly back. Instead the plan is to drive a car back. A pretty monumental task when you consider that Perth to Airlie Beach is about 8,500 kms if you go across the top. We decided that going across the top would be the best bet and our best chance of making it through the two borders that we would need to cross to get back home. It’s a big country and this was a very long route to take, but a safe one. We also have a quest for the road trip. We will be visiting every brewery north of the Tropic of Capricorn, on our way back to Airlie Beach, except Cairns. This is the beginning of our journey. It made sense to purchase a cheap roof top tent for the trip, cheaper than motels, so we bought an Adventure Kings roof top tent. It was handy to have as it gave us a good testing platform for the you beaut roof top tent that Magnus wants to build. We practised our ‘beer quest’ by popping into a brewery in Cannington. We settle into a comfortable liveaboard life again at Tom's Harbor Keys. That is until Hurricane Season 2020 starts early and we find ourselves along the very beginning of the path of Tropical Storm Arthur. After all the winds and rain we decide to swim over to the private island until we get visited by two large tarpon. Before we leave the secluded anchorage we face one more storm that almost puts us in the mangroves. We are Shawn, Jessie, Mojo and Voodoo. Here is the short story on why we replaced our rudder bushings twice! When we hauled the boat at Thunderbolt Marine in Savannah in January 2020, we had planned to replace the rudder bearing in the lower rudder shaft bearing carrier since they had become loose over time which is common. The rudder bearings are made of a material similar to Delrin (like Teflon) but of a material that is not shared from the OEM. Thunderbolt Marine had a machine shop that could make the bearings and knew the specifications from Leopard. That material was Delrin. After about two weeks we sailed and started to hear the squeaking and determined it was coming from the new bearings. That also caused a strain on the auto-pilot and got worse in short order. Turns out the bearings swelled once in the water and tightened up on the shaft causing the squeak and the strain. So we had to go back on the hard to replace the bearings. Thunderbolt offered to make new ones but I was leery after the first failure. We got in touch with International Boat Spares who supplied the original JP3 bearings. We had those shipped from France and we were there for the reinstall of the lower bearings. The bearings Thunderbolt made had swelled so much we had to cut them out of the bearing carrier under the boat. The original ones we took out fell out of the bearing carrier when we pulled them to be replaced. And the new ones from International Boat Spares slid right in for the reinstallation. Problem solved; lesson learned. We have some ups and downs this time. We make a few mistakes, but quickly figure out how to fix them. About Us: So who are we? We are Kate and Curtis, a YouTube sailing couple and travel vloggers, with our sailing rescue dog Roxy, aboard SV Sweet Ruca, a J-Boats J/46 monohull. We used to be sailboat racers on the great lakes (we still are...kind of). We bought a sailboat, re-fit it, with a goal to sail around the world, doublehanded, via the capes (Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope). Some say this is the wrong way or the hard way. To us, the challenge is part of the journey. We will see if this will happen or not, as the "new normal" has put quite a damper on our travels. For now, we are holed up in the Windward Islands of the Caribbean making videos and scuba diving. We are not Sailing La Vagabonde, Expedition Evans, Sailing Doodles, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, MJ Sailing, Gone With the Wynns, or SV Delos. We aren't Vendee Globe Race or Volvo Ocean Race sailors, although sometimes Curtis wishes he was one. We don't have a fancy catamaran, but we do have a pretty and fast monohull sailboat. EP 153: Provisioning for our Atlantic Crossing The time has come to get provisioning. Although we will be making a stop in Namibia before we do the atlantic crossing. Grocery prices are cheaper in South Africa so we opted to do it here. We will replenish our stocks once again in Namibia but the bulk stuff has been completed. It was definitely a new experience for us buying so much groceries at once. We bought most of the stuff we eat on a regular bases. Provisioning for food on a cruising sailboat has its challenges. It’s not like you can just run out to the store at any given moment to pick up some more cheese or bread. It takes planning as in are you going to a marina or will you dingy to shore from an anchorage? Then you’ll need to find out where the nearest grocery store or market is to you. The Survey on our cheap catamaran sailboat was very unusual. The previous owners we insistent on walking side by side with our surveyor and "showing" him everything. They were clearly stressed and tensions were high. As a result the surveyor had a strange and difficult task assessing all of the equipment on the catamaran sailboat. All in all the day went okay and we found ourselves heading back to the negotiating table. We finished our non stop sail from Southampton UK to Gibraltar. On arrival we learnt that Orcas were actually attacking sail boats along the coast of Portugal! Whilst we were sailing there we had heard that Orcas were spotted but luckily we didn't see them!! We just had 4 meter seas and tried to spot the 'Green Flash' every night ...thanks Pirates of the Caribbean! We completed the non-stop sail in 11 days with our lovely skipper Stu who will defo be a friend for life!! He ended up cancelling his flight and spending a few days with us in Gibraltar where we celebrated with steaks, curry's and cocktails 😂 It was so great having Stu onboard and would 100% recommend him to anyone who needs a hand!! We love you Stu!! We were only allowed to stay in the marina in Gibraltar for 3 days as another Fountaine Pajot Catamaran had booked the space for the Wednesday. There were no winds along the coast of Spain so we decided last minute to sail around the corner to La Linea, where our friends on Insta were, and anchor there for a couple days! We met up with Sea Heroes, Sailing Makani & See The Little Things for drinks in Gibraltar one night and then Sea Heroes hosted a taco and wine night on their beautiful Lagoon 42 for us all and was a fantastic evening sharing all our crazy stories of sailing life. We would have loved to have been able to help in some way but the boat infront called for help and as there was only two of us onboard we decided to turn our Nav lights off and head to land instead. As it was a bit blowy we decided to anchor up in a bay near Cartagena and reorganise our warranty work and book a berth in Port Cartagena instead of Alicante. As always our Fountaine Pajot boat broker - Mi.Cat's were so helpful and organised the warranty work to be done there instead which we were so grateful for. After spending the morning organising everything we decided to take the afternoon off and have our first dip in the sea this year! We loved every minute and realised that we had been rushing too much (as always) to get to places! After we serviced our engines and the boat repairs were done we headed towards Ibiza which is where we are now as we explain everything from Lockdown to getting our new boat. Yay!! Our cabin headliners are finally done!! Its a job we've been putting off because we haven't had access to the vinyl that we had wanted to line the boards with, but eventually decided to go ahead with what we have right here. With Covid issues and just not getting into Cape Town to source the vinyl, we decided to just go with slightly stippled, painted boards to match the cabin walls. Probably not as posh as vinyl headliners but what the heck - decided to go ahead and if we grow to hate them, then we will redo them, its another job we can tackle down the line at a later date. Ultimately, we actually love how they have come out. What, with me being my super difficult self and insisting that the headliner be one single big board, instead of 2 or 3 smaller sections with joins, and Robin's attention to detail and needing to get fit and dimensions exactly right, those big boards were carted in and out of the boat so many times, patience was tested and moods affected, buy hey!!, what a final result. Our cabins now finally have an 'almost finished' feel - we still need to put the teak bed opening surrounds in place in each cabin - seeming cleaner, lighter and more airy.👏 We were even able to fit some 12V computer fans into the headliners below the vents that are fitted in the cockpit, so now also have a little added fresh air movement directing from outside. After what seems an eternity of constant heavy, cold wind - well, at the very least, a good 2 weeks of wind without a single days break, we decided to head out on the dinghy and do some exploring to try to get over our cabin fever. But just as we were packing up our picnic and sorting things out to leave, our beautiful calm, still day changed YET AGAIN 😡 Fancy that, yet another incorrect weather prediction?? We were desperate and decided to go anyway but eventually had to turn back because the sea state got a little gnarly. We were able to go into another bay to go ashore and take a lovely walk. On a previous visit to the area, we saw a breeding pair of Cape Eagle Owls and their owlets so decided to try to find them again, saw some lovely seagull fledglings and their angry parents and also managed to do a bit of sea plastic pollution removal after Denver found a couple of huge plastic buoys in the rocks.

Ciao Amici! Bentornati sul Giugyssima e benvenuti al Vlogmas numero 17 di questo 2020. Oggi condividerò con voi una delle mie più radicate tradizioni natalizie: la casetta di pan di spezie, o Gingerbread House. Éormai da molti anni che, in occasione del Natale, progetto e realizzo da zero una costruzione di pan di spezie. I primi anni si trattava di semplici casette, ma poi ho provato a realizzare progetti diversi, sempre molta apprezzati da famiglia e amici. In questo video vedrete alcune vecchie foto (perdonate la bassa qualitá!) delle mie creazioni e seguirete l'intero processo della "casetta" (alla fine del video scoprirete che forse non é proprio una casetta 😉) del 2019. Jun 2017: bei unserem 1. Segeltörn hatten wir das riesen Glück inmitten einer Delphinschule zu segeln. Die Delphine schwammen auf uns zu, unter unserem Schiff durch und sprangen neben aus dem Wasser. Es war einfach phantastisch, großartig, beeindrucken und wunderschön !!! Wir beobachteten dabei auch einen Delfin mit einer Plastiktüte über dem Kopf. Wir überlegten schon, rein zu springen und ihm zu helfen! Zu unserer großen Freude bekam er sie irgendwie ab. Und zu unserem großen Erstaunen schwamm er wieder zu ihr hin um weiter mit ihr zu "spielen". Das alles 15m von uns entfernt. Auch sahen wir eine Mutter mit ihrem Kalb ... Wir hatten ein riesen Glück !!! Es war übrigens vor Pula. Hier geht´s zum ganzen Törn, den ich als frischgebackene SKS-lerin mit meinen Jungs erstmalig wagte.
